"The average cost of keeping a female prisoner, each day, during the 2010-11 financial year was $372, compared with the average cost for a male prisoner of $248. Men kept in maximum security cost $325."

"There were 500 women in jail at the end of 2011 - each costing about $135,000 a year, compared to 7934 men." (http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-stories/12949244/50-more-to-house-female-prisoners/)

Holyfuckanoly 135k... if gave the women 85k you'd save 50k/year... ahhhhh idiocy at its finest... you could support 2-3 family's with that cash.

Why does it cost so much to keep someone in a box?
Probably have higher standards of living than I do.

You guys don't think much do you?

If you divide the TOTAL cost of all of the buildings, staff, electricity, other amenities, and divide it by TOTAL female prison population, it costs 50% more PER FEMALE INMATE.

It's a numbers game. There's a lot more male prisoners. Hence the per capita cost it less.

Sigh...

"Crime is not the consequence of a set number of criminals; criminals are the consequence of a set number of opportunities to commit crimes."

Stunning stuff.

We obviously need to imprison more women.

I for one would be in support of my tax dollars going toward industrial quantities of Johnson'sŪ Baby Oil. Also plenty of surveillance cameras. Per capita cost be damned.

"In every case, humanity and common sense made the insoluble problem just get up and go away.". That doesn't surprise me, not really. That was a great read.

On a more personal note, sorry Ocean1, but ditch money and make humanity and common sense the "currency" of the day... the benefits speak for themselves.

Just don't piss her off, lest she ground-and-pound you to death.

Brown people aye. Should probably just let them all fight it out amongst themselves and save the winners for breeding. Imagine the rugby players we'd have two centuries hence.

Oooo time for some new laws or none at all perhaps... the NDAA could be just the ticket (https://soulsecretservice.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/s1867-passes-empowers-us-military-to-operate-on-us-soil-among-other-things/).

24/7 care, what the flip you on about son? you wanna only supervise the prisoners between 9-5?

Heathcare / heating - What the flip you on about son? You wanna pay for expensive medical bills for the sick inmates? or do you want to make them live in sub human conditions? Your ignorance is only surpassed by your naivety.

Education - you want them to end back up in prison dont you, yep lets spend 100k a year on someone and get no results from it. Please can you invest my money? you muppet. (tbh, im not sure what their inhouse education is like).

Clothing, food - Yes lets starve them like jews in ww2.

Tv - its free. WTF.

Wanting to go back? Im not even going to comment on that.

What it boils down to is, that you, mashman, want to punish prisoners over and above what punishment the state gives out. Who made you judge.

It'd save money and it ain't like they're going anywhere.

Heathcare / heating - What the flip you on about son? You wanna pay for expensive medical bills for the sick inmates? or do you want to make them live in sub human conditions? Your ignorance is only surpassed by your naivety.

Give 'em a thicker duvet, some pills and a splint... bothing to do with subhuman conditions, just similar to those who get turned down due to pre-existing conditions and those who can't afford heating. I'm pleased to see that some people still have a caring attitude. Do you have may bf's inside?

Education - you want them to end back up in prison dont you, yep lets spend 100k a year on someone and get no results from it. Please can you invest my money? you muppet. (tbh, im not sure what their inhouse education is like).

We already do in soooooo many sectors of society, the first bunch that spring to mind are politicians... and they'll do a far better job of managing your money for ya.

Clothing, food - Yes lets starve them like jews in ww2.

Tv - its free. WTF.

I'm sure they didn't have clothes before they went inside. I reckon starving them's a bit harsh, but they should be made to earn their food, just like normal people do on the outside.

TV's cost money.

Wanting to go back? Im not even going to comment on that.

You just did.

What it boils down to is, that you, mashman, want to punish prisoners over and above what punishment the state gives out. Who made you judge.

Just a few opinions that aren't shared by the bleeding heart PC wet bus ticket namby pamby softcock brigade... Give them my regards at the next AGM would ya.

Have a look at the NZ Department of Corrections website about the amount of re-offending done by criminals. It starts at 26% in the first year after release.
