Mr fry was quoted as saying.... "Rise up, Kiwis and demand better? You wouldn't allow crap roads with pot holes and single file."

(please dont anyone tell him pot holes and single file pretty well describes most of our roads)

yeah we are a complacent lot, we put up with the crap roads and at least the broadband isn't killing us.

BTW Most first world overseas visitors complain about our crap broadband and how expensive it is so he isn't alone. Suppose it helps providers when most of your consumers don't know any better.

Reckon he might be aware of that, and is just taking the piss.

And some place would be lucky to have potholes in their roads, all they have now is road in their potholes!

There are plenty of things a helleva lot more important than broadband. Such as preventing child abuse and neglect. Creating new businesses to provide employment. Etc

Want to go partners in a pot hole filling company? Either that or we could provide fibre to the home and get into the pot hole creation side of the business......

Well there we go somewhat more expected, it was a misguided rant about caps not the speed as such

"Spokeswoman Katherine Murphy said Fry was working from someone else's residence in Wellington and unknowingly exceeded the broadband data cap for the entry-level plan the home owners were on. As a result, the broadband connection was throttled back to a lower speed."

misguided or are we being misdirected? Perhaps he now thinks the caps and data plans are crap? But that's kind of funny as it is a bit of a backfire on dear Mr Fry, so sad. Guess being a comedian he will see the joke. :nya:

As suspected there is a bit of spin there. Mr Fry still thinks we are hard done by.

Fry confirmed the slow speeds he experienced were as a result of ''throttling'' but tweeted that New Zealanders were hard done by with the meagre data caps and they were ''a disaster'' for the economy''.

oh yea our caps are pathetic (lets hope something good comes of that Telstra unlimited trial last year) but our speeds ain't all that bad (when they're not capped)

I think Mr Fry's not so veiled warning might also spur things

"Yes, kiwi land is remote, but if Avatar can be made here and NZ wants to keep its rep for being the loveable, easy-going, outdoorsy yet tech savvy place it is, then pressure @telecomnz into offering better packages."

In other words if you want to keep big budget movies coming here then the caps need to suit the needs of the industry people and not just in business plans for Mr Jackson but also in Hotel and home plans.

That nice man Mr Key and his lovely bunch of henchmen are getting right on that too. You've got nothing to worry about son, these aren't the droids you're looking for.

Want to go partners in a pot hole filling company?
I have a research theory which is based on the scientific fact of "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction".

My theory goes that for every pot hole that is filled in, somewhere a pot hole "appears".

My research has located the area of the world where the holes appear is South Western Turkey.
I'm quite serious. Perhaps Dr Robert Taylor should open a branch of his company there?

I was in Africa recently, the people I was staying with thought 384k was fast (the product is called "Fast DSL"). Broadband connections are bridged at the router (well, bridge, I guess) because the state-owned monopoly telco doesn't do competition much. Each PC in the house sets up a separate PPP connection to the ISP of their choice, for a separate fee.

Faster speeds are possible but seem ridiculously expensive. A 50G plan and "4/10MB access" (guess which one you actually get) is about $200. That's without a phone line, or bundled router, both extra. And there's a $100 install charge. And even that's a poor comparison because typical wages are lower when converted.

NZ may be a bit backward but the Dark Continent is a hard place to be part of the digital generation. Explains why Sarfricans are such patient people, I guess...
