Looking at a camera for riding, mate has a gopro and its good!
Looked at a contour HD but they like $899, as there are much better things to spend that much on. Im looking at the Tachyon micro HD and the Gopro Hero HD.

Anyone got any opinions to share or suggest any other reasonably priced HD helmet mountable cams ?

Cheers

I got myself a RD32II from retard me just before christmas for $229.

I'm really happy with it. Stunning picture quality at 30fps full HD.

There isn't a current trademe add but try emailing this guy who I bought it off. bztechnology.trade@gmail.com

Review here: http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2012/1/8/the-rd32ii-1080p-h264-sport-cam.html

It has excellent quality at full 1080p. The front lense cover can be scratched so I cut a round section of iphone pad protection stuff for that.

Recommend that you also get the optional extra bracket as the standard mount is really only good for handlebar type mounting.

I have a GoPro hero not the newest one the one just before it, well loved, has a tiny smudge on the lens that isnt really noticeable, has the suction cup mount and extension arms, I could be keen to sell it on as its not been used as much as it used to be and im getting a tad fucked money wise, especially with rego coming up if your interested PM me an offer and dont be too worried about how much.

One of our crew has a Liquid Image Goggle Cam and man it's great quality!
1080 and 30fps or 720 and 60fps

Not bad price too but buy off eBay don't buy in NZ

Pretty cool aren't they.
He came round today and showed me the footage, with & without the adjustor block and footage in both 720 and 1080 from the ride yesterday.
I was damned impressed, so I've ordered a pair for me! I can't WAIT!

Which site are you getting them from? Do you mind if I ask how much they were?

Only downside I can see is that you can only have them goggle mounted and not change mounts like a gopro.... then again, I wonder how may helmet mounted gopros have been mashed into the ground!

Just saw these - http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/video-cameras/video-cameras/other/auction-450452581.htm Wonder if they are any good!

Might recommend my brother in law gets the one with 20m water resistance, he likes submarining his bikes :wings:

Many a GoPro have been mashed into the ground, you might break the mount, but you would have to be trying really hard to break the actual hard go pro case. Those cheaper HD cameras work ok for a while, but the vibrations affect them a lot more than the more expensive cameras. So eventually the output footage just deteriorates to rubbish. The lens and electronics tend to be of a much inferior quality also. It would probably be ok just to use for a bit to see if you actually enjoy recording and watching.
Heres a video from the Liquid Image goggles, in the pouring rain and mud http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP1tY2UbVmc .
There are heaps of GoPro videos to be found on youtube.

Another thing to consider is what you plan on doing with the raw footage, do you want to edit together a short clip of a ride for friends to watch?
With different formats, codecs and editing program it can be difficult. Does take some testing to find a workable editing process.

Just off eBay. There is a seller there who is a registered supplier for Liquid Image so full warranty.

I picked out a deal for the 720 (cause I don't feel the need for 1080 when I'm never going to do more than youtube quality) along with extra cards, batteries and a bunch of accessories. Works out to about $420 landed in NZ.

Looked at a contour HD but they like $899

They have been $299 on trademe for ages
T7 were selling them for $279
They shoot to .mov and do not like being jolted or knocked / awesome if you are pro and never fall off and never clip bush or branches as you ride past.
Obviously no good fo me ...'
I hate the mounting system on them too

Be good for incar or something though ...

The Gp hd is pretty nuggitty / I just dont like the distorted view it gives from the convex lens setup

I have a GoPro Hero 2 & it's not real happy with shape jolts either :), they tend to scratch the lens easy to ( good thing lenses are cheap to replace ).

The go pro's hang out a bit when you are in the bush I reckon, but take some punishment, the video quality of the hero2 is fantastic.

no - they are crap, lots of frame drops - there is a review of that at techmoan (see my post / link above). The next generation, RD32II, is the dux nuts for image quality, but has limited mounting options with the standard mount that it comes with.
