Now.. I am not one to complain about lane splitting.. I do it all the time, and I am sure people see me lane splitting and think I am nuts..
HOWEVER...
joining the traffic on the south western, in the wet, at 130kmh wearing "office clothes", with a plastic shopping bag over one shoulder and then proceeding to ride like a madman is just nuts.
Who ever you were... you possibly have no idea how close you came to dying this morning.. at least 3x in 10 minutes.
DO NOT split lanes when traffic is merging. If you cant wait 30 seconds for the traffic to sort itself out before you start zig zagging across 3-4 lanes then LEAVE FOR WORK A BIT EARLIER.. sheesh.
A couple of rules for lane splitting, to avoid accidents and tickets:
1. Never split lanes around on and off ramps and traffic merging zones, especially in peak traffic. Slow down a bit, get out the other side - proceed
2. Always try and leave your lane and never occupy the same lane as the vehicle you're passing.
3. Use common sense. Some of us have wives and families we'd like to get home to.

Was it a scooter? What time?
I joined the SW motorway at about 6:25am from Hillsborough this morning and saw a scooter doing that at the Onehunga stretch. Couldn't see if the rider was wearing office clothes or had a plastic bag or not...

I guess it doesnt really matter who it was... its more of a timely reminder.. and since I am usually the least sane traffic splitter on the south western when I am travelling, it was a rant to self as well.

well, at some points.. WHEN IT WAS SAFE
I was catching a line of traffic at 120, when he blitzed on in front of me INTO the traffic and left me behind..
He was kinda sitting sidesaddle too.. it was weird. Either he has giant balls the size of basketballs, or piles..

While we're on the subject of crazy people, the guy I saw a few weeks ago on Fanshaw St in Auckland (so obviously just off the motorway) on a cruiser wearing nothing but shorts and jandals really did think he looked cool, so much that he mistook my glare as being impressed by his style.
I actually couldn't believe how much of a twat he was.

[QUOTE=Jay GTI;1130264010]While we're on the subject of crazy people, ......
Twice today in ghey lynn I have encountered a twat on a scooter in shorts, bare feet, a sea shepard t shirt and NO helmet. (guestimate him to be about 25ish?)
He's riding one of those 50cc piagio wannabes (late model)
I'm in my car.
First time he wobbled out of a driveway in a suburban side st, I gave him space as a fellow 2 wheelist, then he proceeded to ride up a hill to a main arterial rd wearing a cap backwards to protect his head.
I followed aghast that he was about to turn into serious traffic with that level (lack) of safety gear and (lack of) skill set, but no, he turned up onto the footpath and rode down towards a set of shops.
I shook my head and turned the other way.
Second time, same st, he pulled out right in front of me from a give way as I was doing the speed limit (50k), I had to brake very hard as he pulled out and didn't really accelerate then proceeded to ride at 25k up a hill in front of me.
I'd had enough of this fool and overtook him with the appropriate gesture.
I have no doubt that I will see him again as I use this route 2-3 times most days.
He might've only been going to the shops both times (prob 700 metres), on a mates scooter.
All it takes is for him to pull out in front of some soccer mum in her 4wd like he did to me, and he'll be brown bread. ACC will have another motorcyclist stat to beat us with.
Rant over

Your Guy must've had a meeting down here.
Saw someone of that description heading back your way in a hell of a hurry. Office attire, 125cc mud bike & classic over the shoulder yuppy bag. The suit jacket flapping about in the breeze completed the look.... Undertaking fast lane traffic @ 100km/h on the Hutt motorway this arvo.
Just what i need..... more pissed off car drivers. As it is, lately i seem to be getting more than my usual share of flying cigarette butts out car windows up front. last week i managed to scoop one up & it got lodged & melted part of my fairing.
Don't shit in your own backyard !

Grab his plate, *555, report him. And mention his dangerous driving. Police love that.
I've done this plenty of times when I've seen people driving really badly, or dangerously. They respond quickly.

On the way to work this morning, just off Colombo St, I saw a guy toodling merrily along on a scooter with a pillion passenger. Pillion passenger was not wearing a helmet. Burn him? Nah, waste of good flames.

I often see a lady riding along dominion rd (which is bending, under its own weight, shining like a strip cut from a sheet metal plate, cuz its just been raining...), with her teenage son on the back of the scooter. He is usually not holding on and so tall he is having to lift his legs to stop his feet touching the ground..
Its quite funny thundering along and herding 5-10 scooters in front of me.. insane the lot of em.

Oh, I should also add tip #4: ride as slowly and as constantly as possible. I cant remember the last time I had to emergency brake, or even slow down more than 10kmh while lane splitting. Doing this gives me more time to be aware whats going on around me, and *prepare*.

You start by saying you do 120 everywhere, and lane split like hell, and everyone thinks your nuts?
Now your telling everyone to slow down..............

Actually, I think what we have here is a reading comprehension failure..
I said I was doing 120, and not lane splitting at the time, He was entering traffic at at least 130 AND THEN lane splitting..
And I said when lane splitting I try and keep my speed constant and smooth, with no mention of what the speed was.
perhaps you should refrain from commenting until such time as you understand what is being said?
