Well, had to happen sooner or later so I post it for your amusement. I ride everyday so a bit of rain doesn’t bother me. In normal Dunedin rain by the time I get to the end of my 14km commute I can start to feel the odd drip of water getting inside my gloves. This morning it was proper jungle rain. So much so that the wife offered to drive me in to town but you know, cars? No thanks, it’s only water.

So I’m not even half way to work and I can feel that my gloves have filled with water and the rain has got up under my jacket so my shirt is wet. Decided to get some petrol in town. Pull in to the Mobil, stop next to the pump then raise both my hands and am fascinated by the sheer volume of water that pours out of them. Fill up and get off. As I swung my leg over the bike and put it on the side stand I had the sudden realisation, just as it went past the tipping point, that I hadn’t put the stand down because I was too busy emptying my shithouse gloves. Bastard. Went and paid, put the bits and pieces in the bin.

Moral of the story?

Get apehangers.

Ohhhh Classic!

I prefer filling up while sitting on the bike too - unless its got a centre stand.

but up here in Dorkland....majority of petrol stations get all anti about it. Explain that its safer for me to sit on it while filling, rather than balancing it with one hand while off the bike...usually encourages the 'we just follow the rules we don't make em' line. Insist on filling my bike to the brim - can't do that on a its side stand.

But yeah - never quite forgot to put the side stand down before using it. BUT......know of a few people that assumed their stand was FULLY down only to find out the hard way that it was half down / not locked in.

20 years aye. Personally...I don't think this counts as an "off". Your record remains intact!!

Where is the old unwritten rule of KB that the bike has to travel more than its length to be classed as an "off"?

When I first started riding I went to get onto the bike and the momentum of me getting on kept going to the other side of the bike and I had tip over the other side, was using all my strenth to hold it up.

Another time I was at a set of lights... I let the clutch out too early and it lurched forward, I lost my balance and dropped it :( by the time I had struggled to get it back up people then asked if I needed a hand, they're not bloody light these things!! I felt stoopid, was blocking a whole lane of traffic haha shame :(

Did it twice on my old NS250, caught it and saved it both times - you can do that with a 140kg 2-stroke :Punk:

Did it once with my GPz900 - absolutely no fucking show of saving that one!

Insist on filling my bike to the brim - can't do that on a its side stand.

You may well lose some gas through the overflow pipe if you fill it right the way up - as it warms and expands. My SVS used to do that even though I did fill it on the side stand.

Thats not an off.. that's a drop!

Did similar with one of my bikes a month ago, but thankfully I had a wooden shipping crate right next to it and it ended up snuggling the crate rather than the ground.

Thanks for the correction, I thought he was blaming the gloves. Don't suspose it matters as long as you don't blame yourself :wari:

That's not an off that is just embarrassing. At least the last time I forgot the sidestand I was in my own garage  no damage but.

Dont know why people need to sit on their bikes while they fill it. It just seems stupid.
With any of the bikes I've ridden on their side stands, you can get them stupidly full, even if you stand it up straight you can only fit another perhaps 200 ml of fuel in, I dont really see the point of overfulling the tank.

A while back I pulled of at BP Papakura to fill up before a bike trip all loaded up with gear, stopped at the fuel pump and promptly started to get off the bike, was halfway off when I realised that I had not put the side stand down - doh! Amazing during an oh sh*t moment what a bit of adrenaline does to you when it comes to keeping the bike upright. Just managed save it and get it onto the side stand.

I don't see the point of filling a tank while sitting on the bike - does not seem necessary to me. The tank on the VFR looks pretty close to the max even with the bike on the side stand when filling up.

Bugger mate!!

The guy at VTNZ did that with my CB400...I was right next to him and caught the handle bar, somehow managed to keep my bike from dropping  He fell over a bit, fuck him, bike's are more important.

Nah .... the gas station was at fault. It didn't put up signs saying he HAD to put the sidestand down ...

I read a thread on the Triumph Sprint UK forum - someone reportedly pulled up to some traffic lights behind a police copper on a motorbike....as the cop pulled up at the red light ,....he left both his feet on the pegs and just sat there, till he slowly went leftwards to the ground......te he he. Must have thought he was in the car! Poor bugger must have been mortified with embarrassment.

Glad it wasn't a skittle down the road, if that's your only incident in 20 years, good on ya mate! And I don't think it counts as an "off" either.

I fill up with the bike on it's sidestand, no point in going for more 'cause the petrol would just expand - out the overflow. Last thing I need to be doing is dripping the liquid gold on the road (and possibly my back tyre in the process...)

I don't see the point of getting off to fill it up. Each to their own.

If I could stay on the bike to fill up and pay as well then that would be nice, sadly it looks like most stations now have removed the option to pay at the pump so I have to get off the bike anyhow.

I had the impression that the stations that had pay at the pump found they were missing out on additional revenue due to customers not coming into the station and buying drinks etc. Nowadays you also get a swag of questions about discount vouchers, flybuys and type of receipt!

Just the way I have always done it. Why bother with the getting off to fill routine?

They have been shit gloves since the day I got them, just too short. My winter gloves are fine but you would never get the cuffs over them. On a long ride in the rain I might wrap duct tape around the cuff but in the end I expect the water to get through so take a spare pair of gloves with me. The only time I have managed to stay fully dry on long wet rides was when I had some sweet one piece Belstaff waterproofs and some excellent long gauntlet summer gloves and dishwashing gloves. Good for some decent length rides when I lived in Jockland.

Lmfao - fark yeah easy to forget about the disc lock, wrecked rear plastic break housing on kx just moving it round garage.

Went we went to leave Akaroa yesterday was a decent crowd sitting outside the cafe, one mum was pointing at my bike to her little boy - gave the throttle a blip off the kerb only to land on the road and stoll, electric start would have been real handy :D
