View Full Version : Cheap alternative to GoPro camera. HobbyKing HD Wingcam $88.00

So i wanted a helmet/bike cam for the ride this Sunday but i couldnt afford to pay $300 for a GoPro (although they are awesome)

I went on trademe and found the "HobbyKing HD Wingcam" for $88.00 bought some Velcro (proper stuff, dont get the cheap stuff) and a Micro SD card out of my cell phone.

All you need is a MicroSD card with a minimum Class 6 transfer speed, if you dont have one you can get an 8G card (Class 10) from Telecom for $39.99

Quality is really, really good plus it has a wide angle lens and its so tiny, only 1 3rd the size of a credit card so you could mount it almost inside your helmet. I did mount it on a slight angle by mistake but never mind, you get the idea.

Heres a YouTube video just testing it down the road and back, would be better mounted behind a screen so the wind noise wouldnt be so bad.

NOTE: Watch it in 720p

Good quality for a cheapie. If it has an external mic jack, then I'd suggest running a mic into your helmet as a simple way to cut out the wind noise.

One of these days I'm going to get me two cameras like this and set them up stereoscopically.

Yea it doesn't unfortunately unless it can use the AV jack but im not sure, i could probably get my sparky at work to modify it, but that would be awesome to have the mic in the helmet.

That got me thinking and just had a quick look, found the mic, would be very easy to hook up an external microphone.

See it here with the 2 wires coming off, and its just sitting there not fixed, just need to open the rubber sleeve a little and soldier a new one on with a longer wire :D

Put a red filter on one lens and a green on the other, then use some kind of software to produce 3D videos to be played on your 3D TV in your living room! It'd be as if you were actually riding your bike for real!

Oh wait, you were...

Looks like you have run the mike into your helmet. Great idea! That way you can give a running commentary on the loons in the cars who are trying to kill you...

Its a wicked shop lol, toys galore. looks like someone just hit buy now on the last one lol but he will have more there if you ring him

How did you do that again?

I just cut open the clear plastic shrink wrap and then cut the tape holding the battery in, after that the mic can be pulled off to the side and theres about 5 cm of wire, then i cut it, extended it, soldered back together and put some shrink shield around the wires.

heres a link to a cheaper solution and id advise a go pro over the rubbish youve already purchased.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/memory-cards/sd-media/8g/auction-450333625.htm

Gopro provide a quality service with their cameras,

I havnt heard of Hobbyking before and by the looks of the footage i can already tell the difference between both.

Go pro have their name for a reason and there production in the last year has shot through the sky compared to these smaller Chinese firms that create imitations of the gopro.

If you want real HD not some flimsy Chinese rubbish then id advise going PRO! you'll notice the difference!

Everyone has nothing but problems and distortion with their mics on these cheap imitations, just get a gopro to save the hassle of dealing with cheap rubbish, you'll get quality, your camera claims its HD yet my standard 170 i have at home is of better quality and is not even labelled HD.

Dont think you realize how much a lens actually matters, stay away from the cheap shit im already bidding how long it will be before it eats itself till death. They do not last very long.

So, may I ask your opinion on ContourHD Cameras?

Which one i had a contour HD the 1080p option at 30fps was great but i still had distortion in the sound from the wind.

Gopro's have topped it off for me in the digital photography world, i think there solution with a separate housing aswell as the camera unit itself defined themselves from other competitors. I can film on HD hero and get no wind distortion what so ever, view goproHDhero2 on youtube.

As audience of a film, clip, whatever the last thing you want to be hearing is the distortion between the blowing of the wind and purring of the motorcycle.

Go pro somehow have eliminated this factor, this being what distinguishes themselves from their competitors. Ive owned all the gopros and have never had a problem at all, i can use the camera outside its housing and it acts as a personal diary picking up nothing but my voice alone, the unit itself has settings within the camera and there are plenty i mean plenty of addons which will help you get that angle your after.

I've picked up some nice video gigs lately so I went crazy at the Camera shop.

Go-pro Hero HD2 Motorsports kit
LCD Back
Spare Battery,
32gb class 10 card
Replacement lens kit for my existing HD Hero

I didn't get much change from $AU700.

I've also used/use the $60 - $80 units for an effects shot and they don't do a bad job either.
They aren't bad value for the money.
Not everyone is shooting for a Pulitzer.

Sorry,
I meant the 1080P......

I use one all the time, and actually use the 60 f/s 720? (I Think) option. I find this quite good and have put a few things on Youtube lately. (Some were in 1080 too).

Yes, wind noise is my only bug bare too.... I am looking at that though (experimenting). Nick Cole's instillation of one on Boxing Day at Wanganui aboard the ZX10 Superbike was good enough to put on the TV. They may have used a bit of editing software for the sound though... Not sure, but I do know it was 1080 HD at 30f/s, as my mate installed the camera in his bike.

I was really after your opinions on the picture quality, and you seem happy with that ;)

Lol. Mr attitude of course GoPro is better but if you can't afford 3 or 4 hundred this will do fine until you can. No need to get all dramatic on it. I would have bought gopro hands down if I had the money because its cheap. And these are better than all the other 150 dollar ones on trademe

So for those that don't need the amazing quality of GoPro and on a budget this is a good way to go

Yeah - the LCD back is great - particularly for shooting the 11mpx stills the HD2 now does.
Nice to be able to check angles for shooting video too.
Only complaint is like most cameras without an eyepiece it's sometimes hard to see in full sun.

Or you could get it direct from Hobbyking (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=17200http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=17200) for US$37.18 plus postage - you'll need to enter "HD Wing Camera" into their search box. It's on backorder at the moment, so wait until it comes off, before you order. I've bought plenty of stuff from Hobbyking and it's all been good stuff at great prices. I have no experience of this camera, but I'm sure it'll be fine for the price.

Who are you, Steven Spielberg? Why don't you tell us how you really feel? Maybe he can't afford a Gopro and is making do, another Kiwi trait a bit like the microphone mod. I read the opening post on this thread and bet myself that by the end some tosser would ruin it all. The video looked OK to me, it's not like he's taking the footage to the Academy Awards is it? At that price I'd buy 4 of the things and mount them all over the bike. Use a GoPro for the main front mount camera and use the others to snatch a few seconds here and there so you're not just getting the same view for 10 minutes.

At the moment the main problem is someone has to lend me a bike

Value for money I reckon it is better than the GoPro, but the Go Pro is definitely a better sport video cam.

If you want real value for money try one of these.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/video-cameras/video-cameras/other/auction-450236736.htm

I bought ten of them for about $120NZ (that's $12 each) delivered here to NZ from a Chinese reseller.

They are about 50mm x 20mm x 15mm and can be velcroed in your helmet either on the chin bar or next to your eyeball (where I mount mine)

Mounting behind the visor means rain ain't a fuss and can cut down heaps of wind noise. My internal sun visor clips the top of the picture frame though.

Check out the video below and tell me that it ain't the best value sport video ever. (Use top link if embedded one no worky)

It's the angle of view. When the camera is facing straight ahead the field of vision is 60 degrees to either side of centre.

Is that an oxford helmet? Where does one find a place that will sell this velcro?

I wouldn't mind getting a camera for a bit of fun. How long does the battery last one this one.

Nothing cheap if does not do the job

All the cheapies full down when viewed on large screens, this one looked good on phone, 22 inch monitor pixelated - had the pro on 50 inch plasma and not one bit of pixelation. Scored my HD ages ago off ebay for 4 hundie delivered and came with free 16GB SD card. Place to get them cheap.

When ya in ya senior years and ya eyesight may not be as good as it use to be, reminiscing with Go Pro footage be worth the $ spent decades ago - "No one ever regrets buying quality" :D

Only thing with this camera of yours is that you don't know how reliable it may be.
might break down after a week.
but i guess its cheap.

HD Wingcam 0

Oh c'mon, it's not that bad...

Not everyone needs [not wants] to video with a 5D Mk II and 50mm f1.2 L lens... sometimes a GH1 with 20mm f1.7 pancake lens is good enough or even a G12.

:nono: Shhhhh, adults talking here... :msn-wink:

It was just a metaphor for the debate about Gopro vs the Wingcam, not suggesting the use of full-sized digital SLRs on a motorbike or helmet [though skydivers have mounted smallish entry-level DSLRs on their helmets before the advent of Gopro]

I have a VholdR. ( early Contour ). Not HD, I have a homemade handle bar mount and a helmet mount. I also have a HD camera which I have also used on the bike. The HD camera was so much clearer, but chewed thru the SD card and took a year or more to download.

The HobbyKing clip in the OP is far clearer than my VholdR. For the money, if it doesn't shake to bits, looks like good value for the money.

I find the helmet mount gives a far sharper picture than on the handle bar mount. I think this is due to the reflection off the headlight cowling affecting the light intake of the VholdR and giving it a 'washout' look.

Found that the handlebar mount gives a far steadier picture, but if the road has long grass and hedgerows down both sides, then that makes up most of what the camera will film.

I enjoy putting music to my clips, then while listening, I can cruise my rides again. I dont bother posting on You Tube any more. The Copyright rules for music killed that, and I haven't found any free music sites that I like. ( most are Tecnic/electronic crap)

I've had a good look on www.dealextreme.com and surprisingly enough they don't seem to have any mini HD video cameras. I thought they would sell that sort of thing.
