G'day all,

Seems yesterday (Mon Feb 27) was the official intro date for the new long super-tough restricted driver/rider license tests.

Has anyone sat this test yet?
For anyone who does sit this test, can you please reply to this thread, telling us:

Town or city where you took the test
The individual stages of the test
Any 'surprises' you encountered
The outcome - pass/fail, and your score
If you failed or nearly failed, what were the reasons and what could have been done differently
Feedback you received from the tester
Your feelings about the test's fairness or otherwise
Anything else your fellow bikers should be aware of

Cheers
Dave

PS - KB admins - any chance of stickying this thread?

G'day all,

Note that for Motorcycles, the "new" restricted test is the old Full test, they just swapped places for now (the new Full test is the old Restricted test), new tests are being developed, but not ready until October.

Kin head hurts, you sure?
They give you scores these days?
What happened to testers not being allowed to talk to you after the pass/fail announcement?

Would the two who votes "Flunked out badly" like to tell us what went wrong??
We may be able to help...

Yeah, that would be sweet to find out how it went. I wouldn't be surprised at least initially if they were really hard on people to try and set some kind of benchmark. So glad I got mine done a few weeks ago.

I'll start to get happy when the so called learner's test becomes a 'test' that actually helps to prepare a learner motorcyclist for NZ roads.

I'd say there's a fairly high chance they were just people who felt like voting. No one really fails licence tests do they?

Location:
Hamilton ( 5 Cross Roads )

Stages :
50k area - drive turn lefts and turn rights , roundabouts, merge ...
80k area - drive ... turn left into 50k area .. another uturn
100k area - drive ... pull in to the left ... another uturn back to 5 cross roads

Suprise:
No hazard identification

Outcome:
"That was a walk in the park" tester
Pass.
Score ? didn't see or know i got one ?

Feedback:
"The full license is quicker"

Fairness:
Test was good for around town - I think they know what they are looking for.

Should know:
Nod head lots ... they are in a car and can't really tell where you are looking so make it obvious.
Also check left when turning left .. (cyclists) as well as all the other times.. just look everywhere like
you would normally

Just sat my Restricted here in Hami.
The tests are only available at the AA outlet at 5 Crossroads.
The radio intercom hang round my neck, with a very slim earpiece that sat comfortably under my helmet.
Tester's voice came through as a distorted deafening squawk, but she must have been aware of this because she spoke slowly and clearly, repeating "left" or "right".
She took me all around the residential streets of Enderly, full of left and right turns, roundabouts and U-turns.
Lots of hazards as we worked our way past Rototuna into the boonies. Garbage trucks, roadworks trucks, temporary 30km/h zones, fresh tar, gravel sections.
On returning, she passed me but said I was "a bit slow in the 100km/h stretches".

Advice to everyone sitting restricted:

be courteous at all times
when turning left, always check your blind spot for cyclists
watch out carefully for temporary speed limit signs
NEVER exceed the speed limit - 5km/h under is good
quick glance up all side-streets
indicate left and check blind spot when exiting roundabouts
when turning out onto a main road, try to pick a gap big enough for tester as well
when going through intersections, slow and look both ways, even if you have full right of way

It's good to have that out of the way. Would have pissed me off to fail on some small point and have to find another $80 for a new test.

Just passed this morning in Kilbirnie, Wellington.

Lots of suburban riding, 1 u-turn, had to memorize hazards (easy when hundreds of kids are on their way to school), then a 70kph run around the airport.

Surprises: he told me off for putting both feet down when stopping, contrary to what others have been told on here. He said I should one leg and foot brake at stop signs.

Was easier than the full I did in my car, since there is less communication they cut out the driving while naming hazards part that usually comes after the memory part in the car test.
