GSXR750 vs Danseys Pass?

OK so i got a harley atm not had alot of chances to ride it as im only on my 6R but so far no overly impressed in its inability to take to the twisties in the manner i prefer (yes i know they aren't sports bikes..) as the harley is the first cruiser i have had. Owning a GT250r for some time.
Im going to put a few more kms on it but im picking its not going to change my mind a whole lot and if this is the case i would be getting myself a GSXR750. So as the title states how would it do through the danseys pass as i am intent on doing the brass monkey this year and that would be my route up through duntroon across danseys through naseby and to otrahua.

Anyone done it on any kind of sports bike? I'm not an ultra skilled, knee sliding, speed crazed, sports bike maniac :scooter:. I have a moderate skill level enough to have kept my alive thus far.
Would like your thoughts as i could hold off and take the harley as i have taken her over a few gravel/dirt river crossing tracks already and am confident i could manage. But would get a sports bike most likely before the rally unless it would reduce my chances of getting to the brass monkey.

Flag the Danseys mate! Go to the rally via the pig route-thats what GSXRs are made for! Just keep an eye out for grit:crazy:

I'm all for Sports bikes going through Danseys - it's the only chance I get to overtake them.
But I wouldn't recconmend it if it's snowing.....

To be honest mate....If I have understood your current riding experiences...dont get a new 750. Try something half way between your HD and an insane road racer like the GSXR750.

You might be pleasantly surprised just how good a modest 600 (100hp from a yew years ago) bike will go. Or the 650 twins perhaps. Or even an older 400/4 (NC30 etc).

A few years back it snowed up on the Danseys summit at Brass Monkey weekend.

There's 50 kilometers of gravel. It has been known to ruin fork seals ... the corrigations can be bad.

600's have been 100HP since 1992 ;) Well, mine was... So a little more than a few :)
Anyhow, you have a point...

I did Danseys 2 up on a 98 GSX 600F, with snow/ ice and had no problems apart from my passenger putting her feet down when we stopped at the summit... Yes, it cost a mirror, and put afew scratches in the fairing! That was about 2003.

Not to worry though.
You do need a fair amount of skill....
I recommend doing some flat shingle road rides before you do the brass.
Get used to the bike moving around. It is all good practice in any case, as you never know when you will come across pea gravel in the winter.
ProRider do a great course, but may not be down your way for a while.


I would actually recomend a 600 sport tourer for you as well..... But an older GSXR 750 almost fits into that catagory now anyway...

Well, I hope you like gravel, but really, of the roads I've ridden recently, it's quite easy. However, I did it last weekend, ie, summer, no snow etc. It was basically a gravel road, but I also did it around midnight, so had bugger all view to take in...

Any bike will be fine for Dansey's Pass as long as it isn't snowing too much, just don't expect to be getting your knee down.

All the 600s seem to be so small tho, i mean physically. Thats one of the things i dislike about the harley (Huggers are the wrong size bike for those of us over 6ft). I was going for the 750 because they seem around the same size as my hyo which was a perfect fit. All the 600s i've sat on cramped my legs up being on them for 30 secs legs just seem to be the wrong angle or something. The 750 just feels nice and the seat feels elenty thousand times better then my shitty hyo seat.

What ever i take i'll take it on some nice gravel road's first just to see how it behaves, Theres a nice one up the back of little river takes you down into diamond harbour. Its a nice wee ride with a nice cafe at the end. Its a favourite for taking my wee honda up and thrashing the shite out of it!

I am yet to even attempt to get my knee down in dry weather on roads i know well, so that wont be an issue. I'm well aware of my skill level or lack thereof, I take my time and learn. I plan to ride for a very long time so theres plenty of time yet to get my knee down.

Been over that bit of road a couple of times on the VF, TAKE YOUR TIME, but go for it. Some Awesome scenery too, but can be a little daunting in the fog and mist.:2thumbsup

i've only ever done it on big dirt/adventure bikes such as KLR650, XR650 and a KLR650, i stopped going that way to the monkey when i got my first road bike as it was more fun to take the road bike via the pig route.
however every time i went over the danseys i was amazed at the amount of road bikes i saw. So long as the weather is fine the road should be ok, and if you take your time you shouldn't have too many issues.
