I lead a very well traveled/ridden motorcycle company senior executive on a tour d'NZ recently and he quoth:
'I've ridden extensively in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia - and that is the best ride I've ever done.'

Long twisty roads, great scenery and lower traffic volumes than over seas.

Of course for people in 'the glass is half empty' catagory we have:

Rough roads with too many hazardous surfaces
Ignorant and rude drivers
Excessively high annual rego fees
Picky WOF testers
Too many laws and road rules
Too many overzealous cops - that focus ONLY on speeding motorcyclists

But watchyagonnado??

Yep, being a 'glass is half full' kinda guy (until the second gulp anyway!) we do have some pretty good riding roads right on our doorstep.

I bitterly resent these allegations-I have never an an issue with a WOF tester! As for the rest..............do like the roads however......:eek5:

NZ is the best place on Earth.
We're lucky to live here.

I have tried several times to live elsewhere in the world and while each place I lived had it's merits, I always end up back home.

Mainly for the coffee.

No autobahn, no Auto Strada, No Auto Route. No Italian drivers to take you on, no Route d' Napoleon, no A287, no Arc d'Triumph to liven things up, no London traffic (yes I like that with a bike), no pubs or ecky thump, add all the no's and South Island roads then its paradise.

Oh, you went down the seaward side of the Kaikuras. Should've taken him inland up into the hills. And you missed the Gentle Annie too. And the Taupo Western Access.

Yes - but the route was chosen to avoid the heaviest of the rain - which we did. It was pelting down on the inland Kaikoura and on the West of both Islands. It was glorious in the Mackenzie and Central Otago though.

True. Pity.

Mackenzie and Central Otago

He probably enjoyed those more having not already been all West Coasted and Arthur's Passed and Milford Sounded out.

Still.

I hope you at least showed him some photos.

Big Dave
4th March 2012, 21:00
Nah - it was still a great ride.

Waikato - Mangakino to Taupo was great, Desert Rd was spectacular skirting heavy rain, and it rained on and off all the way to the ferry via overnight in Palmy.

Hunderlees are great, Kaikoura coast is an eye opener the first time you see it and they saw the Mackenzie District in good conditions, plus we did 85 which was mint.

We were delivering the demo bikes to the HOG Rally. Time of the essence, but it was a gig.

Big Dave
4th March 2012, 21:03
I don't get the same stiffy for the west coast as some of you lot do.

Buller sports wood though.

Yes, I approved of that leg in the route pic. It's the way to go. Did you do 22 as well?

Kaikoura coast is an eye opener the first time you see it

True. I suppose it would be. It's become just another chunk of SH1 to me now. Traffic etc. A man can't get his flow on.

Mackenzie District in good conditions

Yes, I really enjoyed coming back up that way on the Nightster in January.

There are sections of the south's west coast that are totally boring. :weep: :(

Then ... there's the "other" bits ...

One fine day ... I crossed Mount Hercules 5 times ... then continued north. :killingme

Oh, and what the others said, it's fucken terrible here, stay in Australia. I've literally come back from the South this evening after a 1.5 week break, rode Hakataramea, Danseys, Rainbow, Molesworth and basically a lap of the South Island. It's terrible, don't come

Btw, this knowledge is first hand, can I send you my bank account details for you to pay my expenses aka research?

basically a lap of the South Island. ?

Oh - you mean what I've done 6 times on 5 different bikes? Mwhahahahahahah!

It wasn't a leisure tour - it was delivering some vehicles with a bit of a detour. :-)

Dont mention it's snowed in 11 months of the year. (the other month too in a BAD year) Gravel roads are normal. (the tar-seal is even worse) The pubs only serve Leapard lager (there is cheap stuff available ... sometimes) Eft-pos is only available in MAJOR cities (as is cell phone coverage) Bikes with 600 (plus) km fuel range will be required in most cases (91 octane price was reduced recently to $4.80 a litre.)

Apart from that no big problems touring the south island ... ;)
