Rules regarding the display of flags by marshals could be changed “within two weeks” following a tragic incident at Manfeild that left one racer dead and seven others injured.
The incident at Victoria Motorcycle Club Formula 3 Superlite race happened after race officials decided to stop the race when a motorbike caught fire in a crash on the back straight. A red flag was shown at the finish line, which was seen by the leading bunch, but those following – who would have been shown yellow flags elsewhere on the circuit – ploughed at speed into the stationary riders, according to witnesses.
The incident has prompted questioning the safety of stopping a race using a single red flag displayed at the finish. In Australia (and all world-championship levels races as far as I am aware) officials red-flag the whole circuit to signal a race stoppage.
