Ok so I finally moved into the 21st century and got a android phone. What apps have people installed and which ones are indispensible. This includes bike type apps and other apps. Have been looking into the SOS type apps for starters.
Also if anyone knows of an app that the missus can message my phone and get my location, it would be great and maybe help alleviate her mind whilst i am riding. (preferably no tracking to know what top/average speed has been achieved)

The app you need is called Latitude.

As Hitcher said Google Latitude does that and IIRC is stock on most Andriods, other good apps I've found are Lookout and Handcent. Lookout is an Anti Virus type app that scans downloads for undesireables and also backs you phone up to the cloud. It has the "find my Phone" and "Remote Wipe" functions.
Handcent is a SMS app that has heaps of options such as "locate", you can sent your GPS position as a SMS to the pillion in a million to keep her happy. If you want, PM me and I'll send you links to them in the Market.

If you want to text your location then Glympse (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.glympse.android.glympse&hl=en) works really well.

Drag Racing is a addictive game! You'll think it is too basic at first then start trying to get quicker and upgrade your car etc ..... I am waiting for the motorcycle version!

For nav, "Sygic Aura" (costs a bit but its good). Waze - its a "social traffic game" - well, its a real time user generated traffic information system. Alot of iphone/android users have it, and mark speed cams, and real time alerts for radar, hidden police, accidents and traffic jams.. its quite good in traffic in Ak.
Ulysses Speedometer - probably the best of the gps based "speedos".
If you are into fitness, Strava or Cardiotrainer are the 2 best.
Tweetcaster for twitter.
Camera 360 for taking pics with different filters (like so https://picasaweb.google.com/103991526465042500891/WhaleWatching2012)
GPS Status for random GPS related things..
PowerAMP for playing music.
WIFI Analyzer for analysing wifi (I do IT.. you see)
Beautiful Widgets for a nice clock/weather doohickey on the main screen.
For my home screen I use Go Launcher EX, its currently the best of all I have used.
And for custom ROMs, I use cyanogenmod - I have an HTC Desire.. which is a bit old so the only way to get updates to the OS is via custom ROMS.
I have alot more stuff - these are the only apps I have currently installed, so if there is something specific you need, then let me know.. I'd probably have installed it and removed it in the last few years.
(oh, and I use superuser to root the phone, and android assistant to keep it clean.. and I dont use AV, I just read carefully before installing apps - all this crap about android being insecure is FUD by the AV companies to sell more AV products. Iphone is far less secure than android).

+1 to Ulysee speedo.
Also install "Advanced Task Killer"
And "Navfree". Awesome GPS app.

Angry Birds
And crack the native software so you can gain Super User ability, which will allow you way more functions on the phone. For me, I used it to uninstall all the hard installed Telecom and Google crap that comes "permanently" installed onto the phone.

Once you've rooted the phone you can probably overclock the processor. Do it, the wank factor of having an overclocked phone will be epic winz.

Alright then, you owners of Android phones...
Your music players. I realise iphones have the itunes disease (going through hell with my ipod at the moment...) so the question is this: WIll your Android phone play tunes/vids currently located in itunes?
Presumably sensible MP3's will work without problem!

Has never worked for me, though would be bloody brilliant if it did!

no, itunes is the spawn of satan.
On android phones you just copy the music you want into a music directory on the phone, tell the music app to scan, and then play (I use poweramp)

To update my music, I just sync what songs I want to update, via windows media player. Dead simple. No fucking around, with shit like itunes..

My Mrs would agree. Something to do with the amount of swearing that would make a sailor blush, while I'm on itunes...:mad:

I find Dropbox app very convenient. It's just I can't fully utilise it due to slow upload speed. It's basically a private cloud storage.

To use iTunes with you Android use iSyncr. It even will even sync back your ratings and play counts back to iTunes. PlayerPro is the best player I have found that works well with iSyncr.

What ever happened to the good old copy and paste? It's a lot better than fucking around with software that achieves the same thing in the end.

Can anyone recommend a good app for mapping my ride? So I can see how many ks, etc and all that jazz, then send a copy of it to someone?
I did about 80k today, over all sorts of roads, and I'd like to be able to show that to my mum so she can stop stressing about me. Though that might make her worse.

http://ridewithgps.com - you can map your ride.
Otherwise there are a number of GPS apps for running/cycling/etc which would do the trick.. endomondo, cardiotrainer, or strava are ones I use.

I've got a good toy for mapping my rides. It's called a road map. Simple, permanent and anyone looking at it can follow the route and relate that to the surrounding country.

I just found the best Android app ever (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=en). Why the OS doesn't have a CLI from standard is beyond me. It is quite a bit different from the more traditional *nix OSs, but it's still a bit of fun to play around with. "su" works as well provided the phone has been rooted
It doesn't have any man pages unfortunately

doubleTwist is also supposed to work well with iTunes, my music library doesn't all fit on my phone, so I just use it with standard drag and drop, is a nice app to use too.
Sweet Home is another essential, syncs things to a network share over wifi with no software needed on the PC side. I use it to get phone photos onto my PC.
And swiftkey for predictive text input.
Google goggles is pretty neat for QR and pattern/picture/text recognition

I just stumbled on this, and it looked good so downloaded it. Not used it yet.
Came to mention it in this thread, and saw your post.
How much data does that end up using over a trip?
