View Full Version : TVNZ 7 - Government misleads again

I caught this on Mediawatch on nat radio in the weekend and here: http://publicaddress.net/hardnews/media-mathematics/

Last year the government in the form of then broadcasting minister Jonathan Coleman either intentionally or incompetently mislead the public by saying the weekly ratings were only 207,000. These figures were given to the herald to publish and justify the closure of the channel this coming June.

In reality the figure is more like 1.4 million.

Yes we know the Herald doesn't check facts, and that politicians are incompetent and/or lie, but really - wtf? Surely now the truth is out that we'll see the decision to close TVNZ 7 reversed. No - that's assuming that the government cares about quality educational broadcasting. And don't call me shirley.

I wish the cock and balls that I'd drawn on my voting paper had won the election. Sometimes I think they did....

Johnathon Coleman no doubt learned Dodgy Statistics Manipulation 101 from Nick Smith.

According to that link its 1.4 million in the month of December, which is 250 000 thousand a week, I would believe a difference of 43 000 viewers a week on different months is entirely plausible so its doesn't discredit the figure put forward, It reinforces it.

Having said that, if a channel can't pay its own way via advertising revenue then I'm all for dumping it, that goes for the darky channels and TV2 as well.

An infomercial channel is FAR more important than an information channel.........thank god we've got SBS and the ABC - not perfect, but a 1000 times better than the shit that passes for TV in NZ these days.....

Read the link. Dividing the monthly figure by 4 might seem intuitive but that's not how the stats work. It's what the minister did and it's plain wrong - even according to Nielsen who are the ratings experts.

Meanwhile...... taxpayers shell out $1.6 million to NZ's Got Talent through NZ on Air. Wtf?

Meh, It works for me.

Good riddance TV7

That does indeed suck.

Though I have no idea what NZ's got talent maybe.

My understanding is that NZ on Air puts up the coin for production and then gets it back in the event they make a profit.

Personally I'd line all the fuckers up, shoot them, pocket the 1.6m

I read up to the point where it said you couldn't just divide a month by 4 weeks and I thought, of course you fucking can, so I did.

Both sides will twist anything and everything in their favour, and at the end of the day its about money.....

Usarka

There is no "twisting" apart from the minister.

Nielsen who are the authoritative experts at TV viewer stats agree that the 207,000 figure is "rubbish".

No its fucking not! Its about the dumbing down of society in general by paying just the minimum of time to important issues so that the other "Womans Weekly" crap that is TV1 & TV3 can fit in more ads,not to mention the propaganda of the Murdoch crew et al...
Watch TVNZ 7 for a change dick, & you might learn something that you wont see anywhere else. Or do you like to remain ignorant & get your news from Talkback radio?
We pay so much for so much other crap, why not atleast spend some money on educating our people instead of ripping them off.....Oh thats right you dumb lot voted then in.....no wonder we're fucked. Rant Over.:corn:

The number that is in question is of unique viewers. Dividing a month by 4 weeks would only give you a correct number if no one has watched TVNZ 7 on more than one week out the month. Which is extremely unlikely.

Society has always been dumb.

We are probably at our most enlightened period in history, and as a collective we are still manipulated by a pack of useless cunts.

Which only shows us where we stand in the greats scheme of things, I suggest you look after yourself and those you care about and stop giving a fuck about a shitty TV show and quit pretending you have a voice.

Outside your circle you don't matter, Dick.

Is society dumb? Its individual members aren't although the powers that be like to treat them that way. Those powers are are smart and use smart people to manipulate society. :shit: look at this site and you will find people that still believe the ACC lies. Then those that believe the law is the law so must be right even though the laws are made by the same people this thread and the ACC threads are bitching about and lord help you if you suggest otherwise.
No. Society isn't dumb, some of its members are and like an empty can they make a lot of noise, but eventually, overtime, the general smartness of society wins slowly, a little at a time. Society is no longer a group of serfs, smurfs perhaps

It's got that in common with the output of Russell Brown then.

Well look where our "enlightenment" has got us.. people calmly accepting the inevitable if we carry on as we do.How fucking pathetic is that?
Ive been looking after myself for years, not because I learnt anything at school or from what I saw on State TV way back then , but because of some crucial books I read & mentors I had who were alternative "lifestylers". I did not grow pot or rip the system or even reject the system...I just took one step to the left & carried on my way.I do not owe a dime yet have everyting I need & could have what I want, all from working as a tradesman or a labourer.
As for a shitty TV show, have you ever watched what is on TVNZ 7?
Do you even get of your arse to vote?
Its the ONLY right WE have to fuck them at their own game...Legally.
Your right, outside my circle I dont count, but I deal with many dissatisfied & disgruntled people daily & they are generally all on the same wavelength which is one of a sense of immenient doom....
Maybe if they turned off Dancing with the Stars or Americas greatest Bimbo & watched something like TVNZ 7 they would not feel so helpless but actually rather fucked off with what we are doing to the Planet & what we are allowing to be done to us...& others.
TVNZ 7 is the only "FREE" news & information Channel we have in NZ...you just have to watch it occassionally to see the differance in content. I suspect that its the Govt purpose to close it down becuse they simply dont want people to get an alternative view because they are being educated, rather than entertained.
Back to you Dick...;)

I think RB is overly left leaning (ie. biased) but that doesn't change reality of the stats being used misleadingly.

How about Colin Peacock on Radio New Zealand - http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/mediawatch

Bring on NZ's got talent. Woohoo go you great country.

Some really good docos on 7. As well as proper current affairs shows, not shit like 60 minutes and 20/20. It's a shame so many consider things like Fox news and Hard Copy to be News when they are really just right wing editorials. Everyone counts mate. Unfortunately even the dumbed down in our midst do too. All we can do is try to open the minds of others and forgive them their ignorance. The revolution will not be televised, but it will probably be on pay per view.

TV1 +1?
What a fucking massive waste of taxpayer resources. I have to agree with the broadside given by Peter Dunne to the management(?) morons at tvnz for this massive fuck-up.
Instead of providing QUALITY programming to the viewers they regurgitate the crap that festers up from tv1.

You are NOT a private network. You are funded by the taxpayer and are required to provide a broadcasting service. You are NOT there to build C class celebrities (holmes, the walrus, continuation st, etc, etc) yet feel the need to throw (public) money around as if you hire A class celebrities.

A huge disgrace to NZ.

Once again, the sooner this network is privatised THE BETTER!

Wrong, TVNZ's charter is history, and it's sole purpose is now to make a money.

Obviously.
They need to be privatised and "get with the programme..."

or the Shareholders. Not the bottomless pit of the taxpayer.

It's a sound business decision. We have a channel free that doesn't cost us, how can we make money out of it without spending any.

While it might as well be privatised, the channel belongs to TVNZ and I don't see that privatisation would necessarily give a different result.

PS - I am well pissed off that NZ no longer has a public TV broadcasting role. They argue that NZ on Air provides that function, but the issue with that is a) they commercial channels aren't obliged to screen NZ on Air stuff, and b) The GC.

It's akin to closing Te Papa or Auckland Museum because you could get more income from a block of flats.

I wonder if the Ad companies will have to pay twice? I'll buy it if they want it privatised and in return I'll leave TVNZ plus one running but pocket the cash so I have to put in no effort at all and as they're not cutting the funding it'll be money for nothing. Sweet deal for someone.
