Fonterra and Golden Bay

It's a very sad state of affairs that a lot of the workers, from the Fonterra plant that burnt down, won't be able to get jobs back at their old place of work and may have to move out of Golden Bay to keep a job at Fontera.

Living in a town like Golden Bay is (I'm sure) a lifestyle choice more than working for Fontera is a career choice - if you know what I mean. I really feel for the town and the people.

I heard on the Business report that they were rebuilding and there'd be no job losses. Isn't that the case?

They are rebuilding, but they are cutting back, not including butter or something like that. The company I work for did the Geotech work down there a few weeks ago.

I feel for those who will lose their jobs, but am encouraged by Fonterra's commitment to processing milk in Golden Bay.

So it'll be about 60 workers from 90 odd.

Dad worked at the cement works but we got out a couple of years before it closed down.

I agree - Fonterra looks after its workers much better than the two legacy companies had been doing for a few years. I am quite confident that those who are prepared to move to get another position will get one. Sad for those who own a house, though - the down-sizing can only damage real estate values.

It is a natural hazard. It doesn't matter how careful a welder is, some splatter goes places you never see or imagine possible.
Many years ago we used to have "security" working through the night - factory staff rather than actual security people - whose main reason for being there was to check on areas where hot work had been done. This doesn't seem to happen now (on some sites, at least), and here is the consequence.

Everything is far from Golden bay - that's the beauty of the Bay. Awesome road over the Takaha Hill.
The Fonterra plant was right in the town. Sad news about the downsizing. I know I wouldn't want to move out if I had chosen to live there. Still I expected Mr Corporate to just walk away so well done Mr Fonterra for showing some small town support and considering the people for a change.

Absolutely, I went to the Gathering a couple of years running with mates, all of us riding. Takaka Hill would have to be one of the best roads I have ever had the pleasure of riding.
