When looking at dirt bikes, is there any benfit from buying from a dealer?
Do you get any sort of warranty on the bikes similar to when you buy used from a car dealer?
Or is the fact that they are off road bikes mean there is efectively no warranty as they are designed to be treated badly etc?

Under the consumer act you get a 30 day warranty from a dealer if you buy a second hand. If you buy brand new some brands will offer a longer warranty.

Another bonus re: buying from a dealer, is that "most" times a dealer will bend over backwards to help you after you have paid for a bike from them, if they a good dealer they know that they are more likely to make more money from a customer in the long run than in the short term of just 1 bike sale, so it is in their best interest to sort you out.

Most shops I have worked at have helped a lot when the warranty has run out or if the issue does not fall under warranty, if not for free then greatly discounted and many times at cost.

A happy customer is one that comes back.

Sheesh I'd be happy if a dealer would email back in response to questions

Money burning a hole in my wallet and ppl don't email back, doesn't help that I HATE talking on the phone haha.
Ya'd think every point of contact would be utilised these days.

there is no specific time for a warranty for a used dirtbike, (and not one in the Consumer Guarntess Act either) but this is the industry norm, teh CGA has some comeback for you tho that could extend the warranty longer than that because the bike must be up to a reasonable standard and fit for the use intended

buying from a dealer has its advantages and normally you can get deals on gear as you do it, and fianance options if you are looking for that sort of thing,

CGA, Sales of Goods Act etc don't have a defined time limit. It all depends on the value of the goods, time owned etc etc. 30 day period maybe something a dealer offers, like our yard does on trade-in specials, but the CGA will go for longer than that (in most instances in a car yard).

I sold a KLX450R through Mr Motorcycles & was impressed at how much effort they went to making sure it was in good shape, so yeah I'd say so there is definite value depending on the dealer especially if you are doing a Trademe distance buy ( oddly enough my bike sold to Canterbury ).

I bought a kx250 from tard me and it had so many small niggles i wish i had paid extra money from a shop.At least you wont need do bearings bushes sprockets etc as they dont want to have the issues involved in unhappy buyers if they have a good rep.

Thanks for the help guys.
Being that I dont know a hell of a lot of what I'm looking for as far as maintenece/condition etc, buying from a dealer is attractive.
Just wanted to make sure the premium I'd be paying was worth it.

Have to agree with Tony, emailed a few dealers round the place and not one reply, even when using the enquiry forms on there websites!
Not in a major hurry, so no biggie, but thought places would be clambering for money at the moment.

I would highly recommend buying from a dealer too. Specially if you are looking at something like a 4 stroke MX'er as they can be time bombs.

Bought my used 07 KXF 250 from MR Motorcycles late last year and I can't say enough good things about them. After the first ride running the factory chain guard I accumulated a lot of mud round the sprocket and the seal leaked, also I thought I had a gearchange issue. I took it back and they looked over it and found that the lever had been put on to low on the spline and I must have have been still putting upward pressure on it which was stopping me from selecting 3rd gear when under heavy load and they sorted it, also changed the seal at the same time for just the cost of the seal!

I now buy 90% of my stuff from them based on their awesome customer service.

I probably would ring the dealers though, They can be so busy and when you are dealing with a lot of face to face and telephone customers, emails tend to come last!

Ah the joys of Trademe verses a Dealer, when dealing with Dealer you do have the recourse of putting faults right on a purchase it usually involves a bit of talking and compromise.
most dealers wont sell a bike with known faults as it will only come back to bite them, the only thing they don't check is an engines service tolerances as this would require an engine tear down, most common faults can be easily seen or heard/felt.
Buying from Trademe its Buyer Beware, if spending your fortune best to get it checked out by a dealer [usually $100] and get a Police Vin/car jam to see if money's owed or stolen.

dont count on it, i got ripped by a dealer, (still bitter and twisted about it). private sales are ok, you will never really know engine hrs unless of course you know the bike which is a bonus, dealers will bullshit you about them anyway.unless its a new or near new bike you can count on doing some sort of work on it in the near future.thats my experience any way, and the bikes ive bought have been around the 3 to 4 yr old, so not dungas.

What you said. I have never regretted buing a bike from a dealer - and I buy used; even if there are problems at least the bike has miles on it so I know it has worked and was not unrideable from the factory. In my (personal) experience dealers stay in business because they look after customers, and it's worth developing a relationship with a dealer that lasts over time. As with just about everything - you pay for what you get, but you're more likely to get what you paid for.

Thats shit you had that experience, but you can't paint all dealers in the same light as one that may have given you a crappy deal.

But as I said "most" dealers will try to do right by the customer, as it is in their best interest. Hopefully next time you get a better experience.
