View Full Version : F4 GP picks?

Righto, it's only a few weeks away.
The big bucket event of the year, already!
So, who are your pics on the winner?
It's a public pole, I'd put all entries on there if there were more spaces but as it's limited I'm just going to pick a guess top ten, sorry if I don't quite get that correct.

1st Me
2nd and first looser Andrew A.
Not sure how the rest will pan out.

The apologies:
Sorry, put the Diproses together due to lack of room.
Sorry, had to miss a few people who still have a reasonable chance.
Matthew Hoogenboezem, Dave Manuell and Nick Cain should really be on there.
It's a hard call when most of the entry list are likely to be quite fast.
It's a damn cool field!
I think Regan Griffiths will be an interesting addition, I've seen him race outside buckets and he does alright.
Tyler Lincoln is also a rising star to look out for, he's actually got a really good chance of a good placing.

To be honest, I'm not too sad about sitting it out. It's going to be a great race, probably the best one of the meeting. There has to be 10+ riders who could win it. I'm picking Dave Manuell. He's all psyched up and is a great rider. New tyres were in his van ready to fit and my bike is running sweet, especially with the waterpump keeping temps down.

It would be good to see a mixture of any of these guy's/girls at the front. It could go either way Dick Ford, Av, Rich Ban could take it this year as could Dave Manuell or the Hoogies.
I'm just glad that we're actually going to be there to watch!

It wouldn't keep up anymore. Not enough HP and too heavy. My bike in the TZR50 frame was faster than Jimmy's in the mid 90's and I doubt my bike would be fast enough to win.

I fully agree Mike, there's some serious talent on display and some great bikes. It's hard to go past Avalon for the win as the motor, chassis and rider are all true A spec, but as you said there are 10 other riders that are all capable of winning. Damn its exciting.

I have to say, I'm starting to hate you guys. I got told there's a weekend between the GP and Kaitoke, someone's keen as to come down, and I'm finding it harder to say no. It's not as though I have to work Monday, if there's only Rick's bike going down, instead of dropping one off, we could pick his up and save him towing a trailer. Also the grid is now up to 38! Largest class of the meet.

Well Macolm and I (or just one of us) could bring our leathers up and race for PMCC. Only thing is, is that someone would have to lend us a bike! Though, I am sure that you guy's will find someone or few. I hear Avalon is both AMCC and PMCC, nudge nudge, wink wink.

Sweet. I broke a drill bit off in my axel and got a bit of drill in my eye. Bike is running rough and found my new second had rear tyre had a big hole in it. Van is packed and ready to rock and roll. Really can't wait to get out on that track. Love it.

Was thinking about the exhaust on your bike. That must be loud? I have tried to quiet mine down a bit it was very loud. I know there has been a lot of talk about noise. Do you have a plan B if it gets the red sticker? Might not be an issue but just putting it out there.

So that’s the pole, at least that’s pole as we're packing up. No real surprise that Avalon is the stand out favourite, also makes perfect sense that Dave M (someone else not in pole) and Andrew are up there (write off the current champion at your peril) but a couple of odd omissions. The Diprose are both sharp and have the resources to turn up with serious rockets, and Gavin well he's been in the top 3 the last 3 years and will be wanting the win for sure. And then we have the youngens wanting to upset the apple cart. Not sure the superbike crowd will be too interested in our racing but I reckon it’s going to be a cracker!

Ummm, why are the superbike crowd going to be at a bucket event? bwahaha - they'll probably want to join in after this weekend.
The 125 race will be awesome to watch as well, as we've got Glen Orwin, Dave M (not sure if he's entered or not), Kyle, Tyler in it. Was great cheering them on last weekend, and not really caring as to which did better as it was good racing and they all rode well (okay, Kyle not so good bwahaha). Tyler was on fire and rode incredibly well. As his dad said, the last race was hard to watch, he was pushing so hard.
Then again, we've got bucketeers in amongst other classes as well, so it's all good. :)
Have a safe trip down/up and see yas when we see yas. :)

Well looks like I'm back first & there's a reason for that. A bit of a jab in the eye for the 2 stroke boys this year & I guess a big serving of humble pie. Mmm tastes good with a bit of Ice cream.
I'm glad Nick & James got 1&2. Truly nice guys & well deserving. 'bout time the south did well in a GP & fair play they certainly did & it was with well prepared bikes, good preparation & some sound riding.
Me, well that's a long story, but principally it boils down to time & money. Unlike the South Island guys I wasn't able to skip off to the track & spend thursday or friday practicing on a few classes. I was lucky to pay my entry fee this year & for the help Mike (Yowling) gave me by lending me his transponder I am truly grateful. Will be coming back with James.
I hadn't raced properly at Taupo B track for a few years & have been a bit freaked by the repair patches. I took off to find some clear track in the first session but it wasn't long before James Hoozi came past me. Fortunately my bike had a tickle more poke in some areas so I could keep him in sight & he gave me a lesson. Slowly I started to trust the patches.
I went over to thank him later & someone came up with the session times so it was a bit embarrassing to find I was fastest of the session. & faster than lap record set a few years back I understand.
Next session there was no one to follow but I started refining what I had learnt & knocked into the next second off. But it turns out Nick & James had gone faster still!
I needed more time. But come the first race my bike wouldn't start. I got a push & took it round to 3rd grid spot. Where it died. Had to push it to the side & jump over the fence. More on that later!
Took it back to the pits & well long story but the ring was smeared in place loss of compression. After prising it out I noticed the piston had a crack. End of play.
Disappointing as I knew I had another second in me. Whether I had a second & a half I don't know. That isn't just idle talk from the keypad. About 4th lap of qual I had a revelation. I was still looking at the patches going around some corners. Looking past them & around the corner, all of a sudden the bike started taking a tighter line & I could gas on much earlier. Beginner mistake for someone racing over 20 years, but old man worrying is hard to pass sometimes. Lap times didn't reflect it as we started to get back marker issues.
But the interesting thing is that on top of that the bike must have smeared the ring in that practice. My fastest time was my 2nd lap.
Heck the race is done & this counts for naught. But for me it gives me hope the old dog can turn the speed on. Some more time would have helped no end. A bike staying together would have immensely.
The next day I started off on the 50. But it was dog slow compared to the 100s/150s. It was a bit depressing to go from a chance, outside maybe, but a chance at the win, to total back marker.
Time to go home & see my young kids. One of them who is struggling to get to sleep, but I still love them never the less.
Next year? Ho-ho. Why not?

Further. So why did my bike die? A few things counted against it. The first was I had a piece of ally blocking the inlet port. This was clear of the bore, but when I rebored it it no longer was. I think this brought some ally up the bore with ally piston on piston interaction. Further the piston was hitting the head at the back. Not sure why, but it made quite a nasty ring on the back of the piston. I think that lead to the cracking.
Sadly Avalon's bike had loss of compression, but that seemed to be brought on by a mistake in assembly so I am lead to believe. Mike's bike was clearly the fastest, but didn't seem to be going that well even so. Dave got on the pace & was a force to be reckoned with in the first race, but I'll let Mike explain that.
& congrats to Andrew & Rich for flying the welly flag for 3rd & 4th. Good ride lads.

Super gutted. I accidentally turned my video camera on and off at the same time. I have a sprint race from Saturday but not the main event.
Well 4th is all good.
Congrats to everyone. Was great to see so many people having such a good time. Really great bunch. My mate Jo was really taken with the bucket posse he decided to only photograph us. Well the 2 stroke had the worst of it. I really thought they would pull it off this year. Just not fare even when Nathanael disappeared up the road and cranking some amazing laps, it wasn't to be. Next time lads. I feel a battle of the camshaft manufactures coming. Colt V Kelford.
I got a good start but when we got to the straight bits I just didn't have enough ponies to stay with the others. Also over cocked to many corners trying to keep up. When Andrew came past I thought I would just hook in and get a tow. No chance. He just came and went. After Andrew came past and I reeled in Matthew Hoogie I sort of relaxed a bit. When I had a look behind, Regan was coming strong. I checked the gap a few times, then got a few corners wrong with some passing and he was a little to close. I put my head down and dropped my lap times and managed to pull away. I kept getting front end chatter on the faster corners but after I put my head down and weight forward a bit it went away. Egg. I was having so much fun I totally missed the white and checker flag.
Massive result for Andrew. Starting from last and working up the 3rd. Also on a bike that has just been build.
I will upload the sprint race vid later. Good times.

Best I use this pole for some extra lift. The pole then travels towards me as I'm mid air:shit:. The grandstand erupts in laughter. Oh fantastic!
Fortunately I didn't land on my arse. I've seen it on vid. Oh well comedic break:laugh:.
But once on the other side I see that the poles are just on the ground with one tiedown wrapped around the top. If there had been a grandstand facing wind they would have toppled onto the track. Stupid!

I am to understand Nathanael was running ahead in the first ~1/2 of the GP only to fall in the S's. Shame & shows that when the race starts some of the prequel races etc are not the full story. This could have been the 2 stroke victory but for some bumps in the S's. maybe. A race is the full length.
But the state of Taupo! Those repairs are a travesty & the lines painted on the entry to the main straight - shit a brick! In the dry they were unsettling, but in the wet my front tyre (old) was twitching every line & every lap I was wondering if it would have me off.

It depends on who hosts the GP. The BOB is a special event run under a different formula (55min +1lap) & should not be tampered with.
We should still all go.
It is a great track -certainly miles better than Taupo & the SI guys are a good crowd. Hasn't been a northern win there yet that I am aware of, but I got real close maybe 8-9 years ago on the trusty H100 which sadly got less than trusty 5 min from the end with a comfortable lead when it ran a big end.
Lets think about a truck. Who has their HT?

Yep BOB is a great event. Truck hire and 20 bikes from the north this time. Lets try sort somthing before it is apon us.
This is a great idea!!
depending on when it is i could be keen as beans.
I have my HT licence's as well if need be.
Could get a truck from auckland and bring it down picking up along the way.

Just a reminder that Nick Cain was the young guy that guy that crashed his motard at Nelson Street Races and broke his back not so long ago. Good to see he is back riding s o well. He has also won the Winter Bucket series down here for the last 3 years. Dunno why he didnt race at BoB last year.
MCI ran a bucket class during the Nationals at Ruapuna and Levels, but it did mean running with the 150SS class. Maybe a seperate Bucket class instead of Clubmans class?

Forget the witch hunt for now, it's almost Easter, time to celebrate in the roman fashion.

Maybe we should hunt down the witch that hexed all the 2 strokes. Then I could slip her a 20 for next year.

If you're going to go down that path, I hear you can make the Aratera 'break down' if you slip the right guy a Hundy
