First of all, I have to thank Pete! Like, a hundred times. I got a bit distracted by how awesome the GPX was, and lost track of time. Also speed. Multiple times. So, If you were around wellington today, while I quickly figured out the clutch, I'm sorry. If you were also around near the end, I'm sorry again. Must. Not. Speed.

But Wheeeeeeeee :D

I was grinning like an idiot for Aaaaaages!

Heheh, nice one. There's always that buzz with any new toy (whether you own it or are test riding!!!) So, did you buy????

The scooter is a long term loan, i haven't bought the gpx yet. I need to seriously think about finance and other such things. I'm due to get new glasses again too, which means full time glasses. Not what I wanted, but its time I admitted to it.

I really want a naked bike, and I know I won't be fully happy with the gpx. I like it, but I don't love it.

Keep looking for that VTR. You won't regret it (the GPX is a good starter too....) but if you have your hear set on naked, go for it!

I've always found Stew (Stu?) at TSS in Alicetown a good bloke to deal with (nothing against Pete - just never met him :-) )

We all know I <3 naked.

I do have my heart set on the VTR, at a pinch a hornet may be taken instead. I really want a honda. They are lower in the seat, which i'm more comfortable with. So tired and sore now though. Full day of pillion, hooning on the scooter, and playing with the GPX. That, combined with various pulled muscles, and a slightly bung neck means painkillers. and no drinking. on st patricks day. Poooooooooo

Are contact lenses an option? I only wear my glasses at night reading. Contacts and a dark visor is awesome. Cool you got a ride today, and I have to agree, Naked is betterer. :innocent:

if you like nudes what about bandit they handle really well and look good and should be cheaper than a hornet.

It's 2012, dude. Good luck finding a 250cc inline four that hasn't been rolled, bowled and arseholed and won't end up limping along on a continual stream of expensive life-support work.

VTR250s are a much better bet.

Is that suspiciously-low-mileage Zeal that was advertised here recently still available? That'd be ideal for the purpose, I'd imagine.

GingerMidget
17th March 2012, 19:30
I want a twin. I'd rather a twin than a 4 anyway, and I won't touch a two stroke. I do quite like the bandits, and I love the gsx-r, especially the k6 600!

jrandom

Don't buy one until you've definitely learned to ride, and don't buy one at all if you're not emotionally stable.

Your posts (or perhaps it's just the midget thing) remind me of someone I once knew who really shouldn't have been on any of the GSXRs she wrote off...

thats why i'm buying a 250. not the monster that lams will let me have in october. i scared myself today, with how quickly the red mist set in, and all i could think about was how much faster i could go. i don't want to become another statistic

Nope, while i was riding around shelley bay on a borrowed bike. I stopped in seatoun for a minute or two, and reminded myself it was going to be mighty expensive if I binned it. That fixed it.

that road is a temptress... luring you in.
I swear it was designed for at least 60, not 40...

I go through there occasionally and suffer from lead wrist on that road. it's just so tempting...

GingerMidget
17th March 2012, 20:13
I didn't know it was 40.

Whoops.

I got snotty just by the lighthouse and dropped her down a gear and just nailed it past the guy in the ute who was doing thirtyeffingfive. I tell you, that bike will cause a rapid loss of licence, or death. Or maybe I just need to slow the hell down, and stop pretending I know what I'm doing. Hrm,, theres a better idea. I need to go on the tuesday night rides before I attempt to ride alone and be a moron.

Go the GPX!

I remember first time riding mine. Straight outta the dudes driveway with only a couple of hundred metres of residential 50k then onto the open road. Feel in love with the acceleration. Coming from a 1.3 Corolla it was mental. I pretty much rode 30 seconds up the road turned around and bought the thing! He was surprised to see me back so quickly.

heh, the road is screaming for more than 40 around there

though, what I love about the V-twin in my hyobag, is that second lasts from 20kph to 80kph
it's getting up around 8.5k to 9k at 80, but redline's not untill 11 so there's some room to move.

rarely do I need to change gears around town :P

Personally idd find the cheapist 250 or even 200 to keep me going till lam laws change.Idd get something i new i could flog fast at same price or a profit.

Maybe this

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=456726518

Then idd call in help from your workmates as they all ride and are mechanics.
You know the revin process etc

Idd say 1k to 1200 and on the road and you could sell for same or more in october-november

Im not saying you will or should but its what i would do then get myself a nice old lams 500plus or ducati later.Gives another 6 months of savings also for then.Idd be saying if excess money spent now will lead to a loss when lams changes the buying options later.4-5k vtr might be 3-4k in 6months time with the changes.

thanks for that.

I'm realistically not able to buy a bike until I finish paying off a small debt, but thats being pushed back as of monday with my new glasses taking priority. Its annoying, but by the time i'm debt free, were looking at winter, and i want a deposit at least. So looking about when lams comes in. meh. i'm not really in any great hurry. i'm still young enough that it doesn't matter what i do.

Think I might've spotted you on the scooter splitting down gorge, thanks for moving over for me and just be ware that you don't have the noise or road presence as on a bike (lower and quieter) so have your spidey senses switched to high power always! IMHO the red mist should not set in till your on the quiet back roads of the Waiarapa, and only then once you know them, i.e. where the farm gates, turnoffs, green moss, wind strikes are etc. Naturally the red mist should be speed limited to 100 kph, lest I get harpooned by the kb safety squad. I grew up riding the Wellington roads, and really there are no red mist roads left over that way, esp with all the lifestyle blocks generating the SUV traffic they do these days. And as for the bay roads, any of them, too many site seeing types looking at the beautiful scenery rather than the road. Not trying to put a damper on your riding aspirations, just pointing out there is much to consider when riding bikes fast.

I said right at the beginning that I wanted a Yamaha R15. I still do, so I think I'm gonna try to find one and buy that instead. I did test ride one a little while ago, and it was a better size than the gpx. I really am quite small, so I want something smaller. So mid winter, I'll have my deposit. Come spring, I'll hopefully have a brand new bike. They weigh a bit less than the gpx. Being a 150, people will tell me I'll get bored of it, but we can cross that bridge once I'm on the road towards it. At the moment, I'm sitting on the grass, enjoying the scenery.

One of the people who came with me on my test ride, well, lets just say I'm no longer chasing cupcakes. Friend of a friend, and we spent most of the weekend together. Hrmm... He also sat there, and listened patiently, while I had an attack of woman logic all over the idea of the 150. Then hung round sniffing when I thrust stuff in his face (don't get grossed out, this was at Lush) and mostly agreeing with me.

Totally unrelated to bikes, but wheeee :D

You aren't the first noob girly poser to come on here talking about 'red mist' when riding around town on someone else's bike while admitting you perhaps shouldn't ride like you know what you are doing when you don't. It's kinda cute in a painful and slightly embarrassing way.

Just keep in mind you don't prove anything by mouthing off about your abilities on an Internet site also your splitting on the gorge is actually quite bloody dodgy and definitely unskilled. Have you taken some rider lessons yet?

Roadsafe is a good rider training school. Temple ton will sort you out in no time so you are ready for the 150.

Good you've been clear about your plans too, now anyone with a bike bigger than 150 will know you are just a tyre kicker wannabe who may actually never get a bike ;)

Just remembered this post, When I rode down the gorge, it was saturday afternoon, and minimal traffic. Had T on the ducati behind, and A on the bandit ahead. I saved the splitting for through town. It was still stupid though, and I won't be doing it again. It felt very wrong.

Once I've got my bike, I'm going to take on every available training course I can. Sure it won't save me from other people, but I can help lower the risk by riding safer.

Why the hell would anyone buy an R15. You end up with a bike that is slow as hell and when you realise how boring it is you won't be able to sell it without losing fistfuls of cash.

You go from looking at decent bikes that will actually hold some value (vtr, gpx) to a bike that no one is ever going to want to buy from you when they get to look at LAMs bikes as well.

I cant imagine its going to be that bad i think theres only 3 moving parts in that motor maybe 4.
pull the motor out and give it to the guys at your work to freshen up for payment in beer and parts.
Bargin hunt some new tyres.Little bit of effort and time and it should be a smart bike that will sell for what it owes you or more when you need to upgrade
.With a rego and warrent Its a easy 1300-1500 sell.
You can build it up as your wallet dictates interest free with no pressure if important bills come up.

Glad that you have found people you are happy to ride with ,.... it is important to know that you are around those who ride safely ...

Although ... I would not have called going to a funeral a great day ... it was a lovely service followed by a fairly well organised ride ... apart from the one car which the driver was frustrated and probably did not see the herse and the dick head rider that went up the outside of everyone else.

Now see that makes some sense to me however...

Firstly he merged into a tight space behind a hearse and a butt load of riders. Judging by the reactions of the guys he pushed in front of and the fact that I was only 6 bikes back, it was very clear to me that she really shouldn't have bothered to do that and perhaps instead should have just overtaken the whole lot of us thus actually filming Malcolms boys leading their dad on his final ride.

Secondly, there was a shite load of video photage. The stuff I watched of those that would have been the one taken by him seems to just show him going for a ride and then ending up behind a hearse. It doesn't show the fact that there were well in excess of bikes 70 bikes and that he pushed 'across the front of them' all to fit into a space between a hearse that was following another set of riders closely in a compacted group. So unnecessary and well, stupid

Seriously what a fucktard.

hey Gingermidget

I am with you. Naked is a good thing! Have been riding a 2007 VTR for the last couple of years and love it. Easy to ride, wind whistles through it rather than catching the fairings and the upright posture suits me just fine. Bike does 130 kph without much effort so passing traffic (which of course is the only time that I do that speed!) is not so complicated. And she has caused no grief. A few grazes now, as she has coped with an idiot for a rider who has dropped her a couple of times but no significant damage despite that. Would have cost a fortune getting the fairings repainted and repaired. And I can pick her up when she has hit the road as she is light. Look no further!

GingerMidget
24th March 2012, 20:06
Cheers for that :)

I've taken a step back at the moment as I've managed to injure my shoudler being a clumsy twat, so even the scooter is too much like hard work at the moment :( though it being my left shoulder and borrowing dads car makes life easier! Only time I like an auto

Plus the wind round my place lately has been horrible, so now isn't the best time to be on a bike. At least not until I get a bit more practise with this coping with wind thing

joan of arc
25th March 2012, 07:50
Sorry to hear about your shoulder.

The wind is just an experience thing. I live in the Manawatu and so if I don't ride in the wind then I don't ride! Initially scared the shit of me and I wouldn't (and still don't) ride on days when it is really rocketing. It is not fun on a light bike. But through no conscious effort have found that I can now cope with it. Recognised it the day I found that I was riding on an angle (leaning into the wind) despite heading in a straight line! Hadn't done it deliberately, the unconscious and the body had simply sorted it for me

all the best

As I clearly stated, not trying to call your choice of ride anything!...just offering 30 yrs of riding & mechanical experiance to a newbie.
But at the end of the day it is your choice, and I truly DO hope the purchase makes you happy and I am proven wrong in regards to build quality & reliability.

As I stated in my post mossy, I did researched the bike as thoroughly as possible from the "various reports" in online mags, vids and owner reviews...your an experianced rider and clearly mechanically minded, you do the research...then come back and tell me what your honest findings are. (I would like to hear from crasher, drew etc as well)
I refuse to cherry shit up just to ensure people remain happy...Im just offering the unbiased facts! (Im not trying to offend, or rain on anyones parade...and I truly do hope Im proven wrong! and the bike is as good as it looks...but the findings thus far...are not that good:no:)

A cheap bike is usually just that!...and to repair the many faults, flaws and break downs through ownership & use, can have the adverse effect of turning a cheap purchase into a money pit!...or even worst a heart breaker for the new owner.
GM seems like a very nice young lady, and I would absolutey hate to read on here that her new bike, due to mechanical failure, or poor design, was constantly costing her money...or even worse, she was hurt due too these factors.
KB is about offerring advice and support to new riders...I have tried to do both, honestly and in good faith.
