View Full Version : Tight twisties - Eeeekkk!

Tight twisties always give me the eeekk feeling. I have never felt comfortable or been able to get a nice flow going. I know most riders love the tight twisty type roads, everyone except me !! </SPAN>:sweatdrop

I have always preferred a nice open flowing road and I never really have to "think" about what I am doing, but twisties can make me cringe. Til this weekend !!!!!!!! </SPAN>

It appears the Parapara’s will be on my agenda every 6-8 weeks so it’s something I needed to get sorted. On the Friday nite I made my way to Dogsnbikes/Dodgy B’s place to stay and BB had a wee surgery to install new heated grips. Thanks Baz - Yay!!! Then over breaky on sat morning, I was talking to Baz and saying how I could never get a flow on, his reply was the magic words “you are counter steering though the corners right ??” </SPAN>
Pondered that thought for a min and replied “actually I think I stop riding completely when I hit the twisties” :eek: so my main mission yesterday/today was to counter steer and weight the pegs on EVERY corner! </SPAN>

Well it was amazing!! OMG moment it worked !! :facepalm: Funnily enough by the time I was half way through I even realised I was smiling and actually enjoying the experience. :innocent: I realise now that I had stopped riding the twisites and tensing so was trying to steer the bike around the corner, not weighting the pegs being tentative, and that in turn was making the bike heavy, not smooth and that unsafe feeling.
</SPAN>
So with this new revelation (to me) again my aim today is to counter steer/weight the pegs every corner, and I was going home Vinegar Hill (prefer Halcombe) so woke this morning actually looking forward to getting out & practicing this some more .. Since my text to 86 went unanswered figured a call was necessary to drag his arse outta bed and meet in Taihape </SPAN></SPAN>:laugh: (was far too nice a day to be sleeping) Then after an awesome breaky, it was time to head to Taihape and wait n wait n wait for 86 to show, :yawn: however there was a lovely parade of bikes going past for me to ogle, and of course some reflective time in counter steering and how good it felt. My normal cornering style is to back off the corner and then power through and this felt awesome now I was riding correctly.
</SPAN>
V Hill was great, although only stuffed up one corner being completely in the wrong gear but all good, all the others were awesome and for the first time I actually really enjoyed feeling that zen moments with the bike and having a smooth flow with a light responsive bike I even leaned her over more than I think she has ever been (and I survived the experience)
</SPAN>
So next weekend I think I may need to go find some more tight corners to practice this some more :yes: </SPAN>

Exactly. If people don't like tight twisties, stay away from the Sth Island. The road up to the Denniston Incline must be one of the tightest I've come across. Made the old Arthurs Pass zig zags look easy.

Congratulations Chancey.

I love the way South Islanders rave about their own roads, mostly with zero idea of what else is available.

The West Coast Highway is the best ride in the country im(ns)ho. After that though it's a toss up with the Lewis Pass, SH43, the Gentle Annie, the Coro Loop, and others, all damned fine motorcycle roads.

After that there are the shorter fun rides, the Takaka Hill, the Crown Range, the Paraparas, etc etc

Anyone who hasn't ridden all of them really isn't qualified to comment.

And I can't comment of the TeAnau-Milford Road because I haven't been there. Yet.

I think I'm qualified ...

But the north island has it's secret roads ...

Fields track/Whangaehu valley road comes to mind. The Turakina valley road (the seal doesn't go all the way through as I remember) ... Hunterville- Mangahoe/ Mangationa road-Fordell- Whanganui isn't too bad.

You could spend a weekend in that area ... :woohoo:

As long as it's not raining ... and no busses on the road (near impossibility) the Milford is ok.

I guess ... :whistle:

Kwite white....I did the Paraparas with the missus on back about 3 weeks back. Through Feilding to Turangi - looping back. Started to drizzle on the desert and I should have listened to the little voice that said "go back..go back...you'll regret this..". But kept on - stopped at Turangi petrol station and asked the missus if she thought it best to abort as it was raining lightly but continuously now. NAHH,..carry on,..I'm good. Ohh, Ok. So,...we did and the rain gradually got worse and worse. By the time we got to Ratihehehehe we were both soaked through - wearing our "waterproof" codura jackets (Tui comment). Stopped in a cafe for 30 mins and stripped off the jackets and wet stuff and shivered over coffees. Carried on and the rain was still constant. It was a bastard through the rest. Visor kept misting and rain wasn't wiping off, urban assault vehicles snapping at our heels wanting to pass....slippery mud coated roads. It was damned awful. Got to Wangaz...in the sunshine and I was cold to the bone. Short 50mins home to a hot shower.
Missus reckons it was a fun ride - gotta do it again on a nice day. I agree. Like the twisties..but Paraparas on a big wet are not for me again.

No. You didn't. Can't go round corners if you don't countersteer. What you may have forgotten was to be more assertive in your push/pull on the bars. Meaning your cornering got lazy, and not able to respond quick enough to tighter and/or close-linked corners.

Very much horses for courses. I did it about '72 on my Yamaha RT360 & loved it. Did it again in recent years on the VFR and didn't like it.
Didn't like all the rubber necking 4WD drivers either. They were conspicuous by their absence first time around - hadn't been invented yet...

Actually no John I was literally steering the bike around the tight twisties but using counter steering on the open roads

Hmmmm. Got off and pushed when the road got 'tight'? The cutoff between steering and countersteering, speedwise, is somewhere around 15-20kph.
Can't go right (say) without a slight nudge forward on the right side of the bars. Or pull back on the left side. I don't understand all the science...just that it is so.
Can I suggest you find a quiet road, one with a dotted centre line, and practice the 'weaving dance' aka slalom between the lines. Speed only needs to be 40-50kph and keep the throttle constant. Start gentle but assertive with the bar nudge, it doesn't take that much effort, and work your way up to being much more aggressive.
You will soon realise that you have been doing it - even if you think you weren't.
You can increase your speed as well, if it feels safe to do so. but either way, you'll notice that as you push harder on the bars, your linked turns will get sharper, quicker and more precise.

Nice OP!

I've been practicing conscious counter steering, weighting the foot rests etc lately too. Been riding since they invented flint & never really thought about how I get round a corner, always LOVED twisties though. The tighter the better. Don't stop there though, get some advanced training. Stuff I've done lately blew me away!!!

Ever tried dragging your back brake on slow corners? Makes the bike much more stable at slow speeds on tight corners, u turns, roundabouts etc

I'll do that on faster corners too - especially if I fuck up the entry...:eek5:

The cutoff between steering and countersteering, speedwise, is somewhere around 15-20kph.
Can I suggest you find a quiet road, one with a dotted centre line, and practice the 'weaving dance' aka slalom between the lines.

Bingo .. I was slowing down that much, I have done countersteering heaps when on a straight road, jst weaving down the road using weighting the pegs etc .. was my own perception of tight twisties, which has gotten worse rather than use my normal style of riding.

after dogs reminded me last weekend he said I should be comfortable doing around 70 for most of the curves in the para's and he was right ... I did :) and enjoyed the feeling of bike, being light responsive and being in control :)

I will do some training as well as practice, its all a learning curve :) and thanks

good tip Choppa I have done that on roundabouts, not tight twisties but will practice that as well, I prefer to trail the rear brake too :) thanks for that reminder :)

Cool. As long as you remember peg-weighting is by way of assistance, not the prime steerage technique, which believe it or not is the handlebars. :innocent: Followed by body position and peg weighting and trail braking and ... :sunny:
