Im not to sure what a cheap adventure bike is worth.Is this ok or is more money required?
Im not quite flush enough to buy an adventure bike but wouldnt mind knowing how much i would need for a rough but reliable 500cc+

Lazy, unstressed motor, even if it had been around the clock 137,000 wouldn't put it out of consideration.

Suspension will be proably need some sort of freshening up, because it wasn't that flash to start. Brakes will be poor compared to what is available now.

You could probably do a whole lot worse than this.

I vaguely remember engine and subframe problems - the KLR650 was the fix. Remove the first digit and it might be worth a gamble.

It might be. The odds of having a bike to ride, rather than work on, would be a lot better if you got something 20 years newer though.

Yep that would be ideal but I cant afford to take on hp as im near looking for a mortgage would need to save a bit more expendable cash to reach 4k mark but im in no hurry.Idd rather wait than have endless troubles or buy classic enduro style and build it up for road,gravel and the odd 4wheel drive track.It may be that a restore would be the way to invest as i build and then I know what I have.

As your looking to take on a mortgage, save your pennies & when you go for the mortgage add the price of your "dream bike" on to it, then take the 'excess' that you have & buy a decent bike with that. You effectivley pay the bike off through your mortgage repayments.

I'll pull some numbers out of the air,
Mortgage = 200,000.
New bike= 15,000.
Total = 215,000

Throw ALL your money into the deposit & when you ask the bank for the mortgage , ask for the 215,000. Add another couple of grand for something "nice" for her indoors & your laughing :shutup:

The additional weekly cost to your mortgage will be bugger all & you'll have a new toy to play with :facepalm:

Don't be too sure about the wife being forgiving about your hidden funds, they do tend to get a bit septic when they realise that you have been holding out on them. :laugh:

Go out with some 'mates' to the 'races' & come home with a wedge from your "winnings" & you may get away with it. Do not try try this trick more than once per marraige. :shutup:

I'm with Motu. Cam chain and cam chain tensioner issues mostly in my experience.

....last time I rode it I lost charge in the battery...charged battery and lost the charge again...could be reg/rec or a fucked battery, and its other known fault is a torn carb diaphragm, which I country jobbed with a section of condom (unused) and Ados F2...its also been very personalised with a tartan paint-job...which I seem to get real stick for...triumph pipes as the originals rusted out....hasn't been used in five years...got put away as a real strong running bike... 1500 maybe...but Im easily moved...

Both over your current budget but probably no issues to spend money on either.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/dual-purpose/auction-456717976.htm

This is close to your budget and if o/seas forums are to be believed is almost as capable as a DR650 and about the same as a KLR650.

Cheers

That last one (Freewind) is more-or-less a Suzuki ripoff of the BMW Funduro and as such has a 19" front. I like mine right enough and better riders than me can do interesting things with them. Tank side panels should be removed before doing so, however.... :facepalm:
