So it seems the face / orchistrator (sp?) of the ACC campaign against bikers (higher Rego fees) has resigned his portfolios. Ohh, How sad that is.
Who's next? :corn:

Incidently I don't think he has goneburgered from parliment . More a strategic move back-giving up his portfolio's till things quieten down
Either way it calls into question his judgement on all matters Motor Vehicle related.

It's funny that one little letter supporting an apparent partner gets the portfolios taken away.

With a bit more lobbying he may get sacked or resign but seriously unlikely. And if he did it would be to government posts or overseas government posts.

But it is good to see him squirm.

I'd be interested to see how much the ACC take has dropped by and claims risen by. Since the law change my rego bill has dropped to about 1/8th of what it was in protest and my ACC claims have gone up dramatically. Because I had a crash.

I agree with most posters. Smith is slimy, evasive and was clearly out to get bikers as a group. @#$%

Feel free to lobby people to get him removed. I think it's outrageous that he support a partners claim for money on ministerial paper and while minister. Funny is the partner getting the pile of emailed info from ACC and then having Michelle Boag go with them to negotiate with ACC for more perks apparently.

What would be great is an internet spoof of this posted on youtube, with no reference to motorcycles but a concerned NZ citizen.

I think Key is looking like he's going down hill.

Can we have Smith's head properly please then English's would be good. Enlish because he's inept and taking the country down the toilet.

he has only resigned his portfolios, until there is a bi-election and he is no longer an MP, he hasn't gone. Also he now wants to government spending on an inquiry into his bad judgement, talk about cutting government spending - not

Shamed former Cabinet minister Nick Smith is calling for an inquiry to clear his name after falling on his sword over letters he wrote as a minister to help a close friend.
Just a note,in case you haven't already got the point, next time a politician makes an election promise to cut government spending remember they mean cutting services to you the tax payer, not spending on themselves.

As you so eloquently put it he f..ked us over''. But we conveniently forget the carnage that occurs from our side from unroadworthy motorcycles, excess speed and inadequate safety gear. How many idiots do we witness everyday riding with no gloves on and with clothing that is totally inadequate for abrasion protection etc? Everyday I ride to work I see high school kids riding to school on scooters, shorts or skirts, short sleeves, no gloves etc. How much unneccesary expenditure is there with ACC claims as a result?
I think overall the perspective on this site is very one sided in that respect and Nick Smith has been overly maligned as the devil incarnate. The reality is there are many motorcyclists who assisted the institution of such unpalatable levies. No-one wants more and more intrusion and levy increases from whomever is ''Big Brother'' at the time, including me. But there are two sides to every story, once you seperate polarised emotion from it.
Nick Smith was at the forefront of a Government initiative to reign in the free spending and seemingly unchecked and constant rates rises by many councils, when many private individuals, businesses and central Government are cutting their spending. For that I applaud him.
But yes he did make a serious error of judgement and for that he has fallen on his sword. The opposition are calling for a court of enquiry, which also means spending more taxpayers dollars, that is nonsense.

smith directed ACC to increase the costs to motorcyclists, when equally dangerous bicycles were untouched. That he was bought down (or bought himself down) directly by the result of bronwyn pullars bicycle accident strikes me as delicious irony

.

Some of the increase on local body spending has come about because of increased regulation by central government, which at the same time has reduced its spending, shifting the costs onto local and regional councils.
I understand that a large proportion of council spending is maintaining roads, with it's large costs in (oil based) bitumen, the cost of which has increassed way beyond the rate of inflation

Here in New Plymouth we have a socialist mayor who is engaged in several grandiose projects. He and the chief executive and a few others have no conception of fiscal restraint and how spiralling rates increases really hurt the little people. Its a big problem and these free spending zealots really need to have their heads chopped off.

Political views should not make one bit of difference on topics like these.

Ask yourself honestly - "would I be any more or less outraged if this was a Labour politician?"

If the answer is yes then you're a hypocrite and should STFU.

Smith was just there for Smith, as are many of his ilk, they simply find a party, any party, to roost in!

Nick Smith is "overly maligned"??

Hardly, the guy's been a political time bomb from when he only lasted three weeks as deputy under Don Brash in 2003.

Add the two legal cases against him, the three brushes with resignation over the years plus the latest debacle and it's no surprise he's where he's at now.

I believe there's a fine line between intelligence and insanity and 'Dr' Smithy's crossed it many times. Nick Smith has always struck me as an oddball, wouldn't surprise me if he had Attention Deficit Disorder or similar. I would have said ADHD but I don't think he's punched anyone, yet.
