Can anyone recommend a freeware video file converter pliz?

I'm sick of these "free" downloads that then ask you to cough up money after you've loaded the bloody thing into the machine...like "wonder-fucking-share" for example...

Need to convert .MOV to something Windows Movie Maker can work with - like .WMV or .AVI

Thanks all.

Try this..... here (http://sourceforge.net/projects/svideoconverter/)

I have had a tutu with it & it's not exactly a rocket ship & it turned my HD into lowfi... You may have more aptitude than me, though.

I'd suggest upgrading your movie editor

But I use Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) myself but then I'm not trying to convert them to WMV another quick good converter is miro video converter (http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/) again not sure if it'll convert to WMV

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've found one called "Anysoft" which seems to work OK. And they haven't asked me for any money yet.

Quality seems to be maintained.

I use WMM because it's already in the machine and I know how to drive it. Don't want to spend money on new software since I don't use it all that often and I'm too poor to afford it (cozza mo'bikes, see - they eat all my money). So I just have to make do.

Now if there is a better vid editor that comes FREE..?

Hehehe - might be the idea.

I've had a closer look at the file converter - there is some loss of focal acuity once the file is converted. So not so crash hot after all. Bugger.

EDIT: My home computer has Vista on it so I might be able to upgrade WMM to Windows Live Movie Maker which I seem to think will do .MOV files...

Is the issue just with the container, or also with the video/audio codecs?

Avidemux (http://www.avidemux.org/) will let you change containers without transcoding the audio and video, so with no quality loss whatsoever, just open your file up in it, select the desired container, and for video and audio select "copy".

Not sure about your question. I'll try it out and see...

Here's (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/137074-MP4-converter?p=1130041338#post1130041338) a link to a previous thread where I explained what that means, but the upshot is that if WMM just doesn't like the fact that it's a .mov file and is able to work with the type of video and audio in the file, changing containers using Avidemux should work fine for you.

Here's a screenshot of the Avidemux UI, just set Format to whatever output format you'd like (avi will probably be the best bet), and make sure you set Video and Audio to Copy, that's what'll prevent it from transcoding and degrading the quality.

used to be "avid free". but I see avid brought pinnacle & now trys' to sell you that software, so thats out.
Another that might work is "Jahshaka" never used it myself but looks functional. Not sure if it's overkill tho?

You could always upgrade to a Mac :innocent: (waits for the flame to light :shifty:). At the very least you should upgrade away from Vista  but thats another topic

As soon as I can afford the conversion, it is top of the list. Vista is a pain in the arse IMO.

Avidemux conversion still won't load in WMM. I'll download the Live version onto the home puter and use that. Can't be arsed mucking about with it all day here.

What I am doing is checking the quality of video footage from one of these Replay XD cameras. The original footage looks good but converting it degrades image quality. The avidemux conversion to .avi will play on VLC but not that well - there are gaps in there. But the image quality is untouched - what I get to see of it.

I've had the odd issue with VLC player before with footage from mini cameras (GoPro included). It might be the version of VLC I have, it might be the fact that this computer is pretty damn full of junk stuff, it might be bats in the belfry - who knows?

Used this just a while ago. Converted file would not load into WMM.

I'll use the home machine from now on.

Could try Prism Video Converter:
http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/

It seems to offer a reasonable range of conversion options. Have only used it on a few occasions in the past.

Cheers.

I have that one at home. It still seems to degrade the image quality though. I think that's Microsoft punishing us for not using all windows crap. Bastards.
