Workers from the Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India factory have fought running battles with police as they protest at the firing of of four colleagues and the suspension of fifteen others on charges of “insubordination”.

Police have used water cannon on the protestors and hundreds of policemen were deployed across the city. Workers have been demanding the reinstatement of the sacked workers and an increase in wages.

Honda's plant employs some 1,900 staff, the majority of whom have been working a go-slow since May.

The company has estimated that the industrial action has cost it about 2.5bn rupees (£33m).

Honda has taken the decision to suspend production in light of the current protests. The factory would normally roll out some 2,000 scooters/motorcycles a day.

Honda said it has taken "one time measures to normalise the situation and promote goodwill" to end the bitter labour dispute with workers at it's Indian factory.

A spokesman added that Honda is committed to continue to be a model company in the state of Haryana and added the company's management and workers had, over the last four years, worked with utmost dedication and "in complete harmony".

No idea what the 'one time measures' actually were, but reading between the lines this sounds like a significant stepdown by the management.
