Mate's got an old Ninja he's trying to sell, and I don't want to rip him off, but I don't want to pay over the ball either. It's got a couple of mechanical issues, looking at around $400 to fix, needs a new handlebar on the left, the fairings are in need of a good plastic welder there's some good dents and a bit of rust in the (earthquake victim), and the seat has certainly seen better days. It runs okay, starts well, sprocket and chains and tyres got a bit left in them.

Rego is on hold.

But yeah, he was wanting $1300, but I wouldn't be comfortable going past $700 given the amount of money to get it back on road, but am I being unreasonable?

No, you're not. Old GPXs also tend to have rusted-out tanks too.

$1300? Too much.
To get it on the road and tidy, it'll cost you a wee bit. Unless you do all the work yourself?

Yeah, I got a quote for clutch and fork seals - $360, then it really needs a tune and the carbs serviced as it really has issues with idling (been parked in a shed a few years), that's quoted at $260 - not sure how much of that I can do myself. Then the rego of $484... (ACC ya thieves) turns it into a 2K+ bike.

Idd say your best bet is ask him to list it on trade me with description of faults at 1300 or near offer so he can see hes asking to much.
At 360 known repairs plus cosmetics your going to end up spending 700 on it.
2grand all up is to much then youneed rego and plate also
2500 is starting to look like a newer bike in you shed

It may have some more issues that you don't yet know about. A seemingly small job can easily turn into a cunt of a job that's going to take exponentially more time than first anticipated.

Cheers for advice guys. Had Kevin Giles look at it, talked to my mate, bought it for $600.

Thats sounding more like the correct price for the risk involved in fixing issues.
