Police are urging drivers to take care after a truck spilt a load of Hollandaise sauce on the Rimutaka Hill this afternoon.
Inspector Mike Coleman said police were called to the spill on State Highway 2 about 2.20pm.
The sauce had leaked out all the way from the bottom of the hill to the summit in the north-bound lane, Coleman said.
"A couple of cars have gone sideways on it. It's very slippery and yellow in appearance.
"It's quite dangerous."
Greytown farmer Stuart Smith has claimed responsibility for the spill, and said he was taking a 100-litre drum of "reject" hollandaise sauce to feed animals at his farm.
He realised the sauce was spilling onto the road when following motorists started tooting their horns at him.
NZTA Wellington state highways manager Rod James said crews were working to get the road safely cleared as soon as possible.
"Our thoughts are also with the people of the Wairarapa, who sadly may have to go without eggs benedict this weekend."
A reporter at the scene said there was a "trickle" of the sauce on the road.

Thursday night riders are planning to cook some eggs on their exhausts on the way up. Maybe a bagel or two.
