View Full Version : Suicidal flatmate and the CBR1000 'Fireblade'

So, the catchy title caught your attention? i'd like to share with you the story of my flatmate and his dream bike, which also happens to be his first.

last month, i moved into my flat in chatswood on the north shore.
there are 6 of us living here, it's a beautiful house which overlooks the city. all of my flatmates are really good, down to earth people, except one guy in particular,so this story is about my flatmates desire for the best, let's call him Johnny...

Johnny has been asking me about my bike for the past few weeks, (06 hyosung GT250R) asking bout it's stats, how fast it can go, is it fun to ride and such, id gathered that he wasn't a rider himself, but i asked anyway, "are you interested in riding?"
'yeah' said johnny, 'i've never ridden before but i'm keen to get into it'. joy! i love to hear that people are keen to get into riding. the pleasure that i get from riding is immense! and the idea that other people can experience the same feeling of freedom, adrenaline, and pride excites me!

"truly", i said, "have you seen any bikes that you like the look of"? johnny then presents his i phone with a book marked page of a trademe listing for a 2009 CBR1000 Fireblade, i was impressed, they're really nice bikes to look at and honda being one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in the world, i am sure that the fireblade would be a quality ride, "cool bro" i said, "i'm pretty sure they make them in a 250cc aswell". in hindsight i'm thinking that i really should have talked up my hyosung, i was very honest with him when he was enquiring about it, i told him that it's a good entry level bike, and that i'm beginning to get bored of it's limited power and speed, that i would definitly reccomend these bikes to a beginner. but Johnny is a pretty stylish sort of guy, he likes expensive clothes, he works out alot, i think he likes to be 'the man

"i'm not interested in a 250" i want a 1000... oh dear.

so i'm thinking, if he learns to ride a 1000cc sports bike, then, sure he will be used to riding a big bike, no harm in that, i mean, he won't be able to get sit his license on it, but im sure he could find a bike to borrow for that. the thing is, i had that the joy of learning to ride on suzuki dr200, in a paddock, with lots of nice, soft, grass to land on, with no hard, moving combustion driven traffic to get in my way. i think it was the perfect way to learn, Johnny having no experience at all of riding, i feel he needs somewhere safe to kearn the basic(how to go fowards, how to stop, how to change gear)
in remembering the first time i dropped my hyosung (3 times in total) i was highly pissed off with myself, she is my pride and joy and i slammed her into the ground, but she was only $3000, so the thought of him toppling off his $10,000 fireblade into the street or carpark... i feel bad for the bike.

it's been a week now, since he told me he was keen on the fireblade, and every day i've been showing him trademe listings, motorcycle trader articles anything which makes a 250 look good! but to no avail.

the thing is, i dont want my flatmate to get wasted, and even more, i don't want to see such a sexy machine(the bike) all scratched up, or worse sitting in the garage coz he's shit scared to ride it.
what do you guys recon? is this a bad idea, to learn to ride on a 1000? he's put up a good point, that he will get used to it, having had nothing else to compare it to.

Very bad idea to learn on a 1000, point out from his stats he likes so much, that a cock up where he twisted the throttle by accident (or dumps the clutch and is pushed back from the g-force and that twists the throttle) he'll be doing a hundred before he can think what to do next.

The point that there is nothing else to compare it to is up to fuck all, still way easier to do something stupid on a thou than a 250.

Weight is a bit thing when learning too imo, get something around 140kg, and its a lot easier to recover balance or plant a foot if needed; saves fucking up those delicious fairings.

Not your problem.

He is a man, he is entitled to be left to make his own decisions.

Yes, they are ill-informed. Yes, they might kill him. But ultimately, that is his own problem, and entirely his own decision to make.

I would not worry too much though... he'll reassess after he scares the ever loving shit out of himself... and then, you'll know where a cheap 09 blade is ;) It's as good a choice as he can make though... they practically ride themselves... even a noob would have a hard time stalling one (it applies a little gas for you, and the clutch assist makes it a doddle to use).

Johnny is very obviously gay.
Stylish clothes, likes to work out etc, he dosent want to "be the man" he wants a man.
Clearly his plan is to ride it once, then tell you it i scares the shit outta him, & can you ride it while he goes pillion.

When he gets the blade, unplug 2 cylinders.
Sweet as :sunny:

I ride a 97 blade with around 50 less horsepowers than what he is considering. Heavier and bulkier than a 250, snapping the throttle will throw you backwards if you arent expecting it. Tell him to remove the fairings first, so at least they survive the week.

Show him a bunch of videos from america of people trying to learn how to ride 1000cc sportsbikes and estimate how much each crash cost since he wont be able to get insurance on it.

dude, thy're good bikes to learn on, get over it.

i kninda want him to get the blade, in a way, coz then i can ride it.
i don't want him to die however, and i really dont want it to sit in our garage, it would break my heart.

i know theres some sexy little 250s out there, im gunna suggest he gets some 2nd hand 250, then mod the balls off it, it'd be cool for him to ride, coz then i have someone to ride with.

pre 95 jap sports bikes (MC22 CBR250RR, ZXR250C) have enough power, if he wants more suggest a 2 stroker before the laws change, at least that way he is legal and less likely to kill himself

ZOMG he is a crazy fool and you are awesome for being really mature and sensible

he will die, of death, and you will secretly enjoy the little shiver of delight that will run down your spine as you contemplate the tragedy of his hubris

you should tell him so

and then you should go for a mature and sensible ride on your Hyosung

Yep. Apart from that last bit...

Not every law is a good one, but smaller, lower-powered bikes for learners is a sensible law. Tell him if he doesn't want a 'gay' 250 to wait until LAMS comes in (Sept - Oct this year) then his choices increase big time.

He'll pay $10k for it, he'll be terrified the first time he opens it up in second or third, if he doesnt kill himself, he'll sell it cheap: you'll be able to straight swap the Hyo plus two grand cash in a burger bag (protip: eat the burger first) and everybody's happy. ten large seems cheap for an 09 Blade though.

"Johnny", is all show. He'll never actually ride the bike but it will be kept in pristine condition as will his matching riding gear.

However, you may get to ride it to places (albeit early in the morning) where he'll get you to position it strategically so he can pose for all the girls. You may "get laid by association" so stick around.

All you can do is tell him he is stupid. You can't stop him buying it.

I know someone who hasn't owned anything under 1000cc and he is still alive.

Just hope he is smart enough to ask advice on riding if he does get a litre bike.

I'm subscribed, I feel this thread has a bright future unlike Johnny. Yeah, nah, yeah. His money, his choice. Your conscience is clear but defo get a good ride on it before he gets too carried away or just carried away. Get him to put you in his will for the bike.

If he gets the bike it is wrong on many levels but...... Last time I was in the UK I was told a tale by a mechanic mate at a dealers, some guy came in & paid cash for a new GSXR1000, no licence & allegedly first bike.. He turned up again a week later for new tires, the originals were absolutely trashed & at the time of tale telling he had not dropped the bike in over a year. Go figure, maybe his surname was Hutchinson.

When you get home, ask him if he thinks he's ready to go 4 times faster, by himself, on something that will more than likeky get totalled when he comes up on a corner too fast and tries to brake too late. If he's really dumb enough to go and get this bike, there's not much anyone can do to stop him. Just another shore-boy too cool for school? Or does he thinl it will pull the hicks or something?

Background: I went from a 250cc to a 650cc in 3 months. and then 750 and 900/1000 in a year or so. (with lots of optional training and road time)

Comment: steep learning curve. have learnt car driving from racing drivers and had a 400+hp car. so know the road. Rode every weekend with some of the more experience members from KB and learnt lots. Still I shat my pants when someone lent me their R1

Golden rule: The difference between a small and big bike is that a BIG bike will get you into trouble quicker. Much quicker.

If I was looking at this as an investment. I would pay 10k to buy your mate a 1000cc fireblade, in return I will have title to their life insurance at 200k. I think it will be a good investment.

As a biker: I would pray that he does not get a 600 or 1000 as their first bike. Saves me the funereal.

OMG is your flatmate for real??? Keep a video camera handy if this fool really does buy the blade. You'll at least have evidence for the crash investigators. I really hope you can talk him out of it.

And away!! or FartBlades, and attracting the attention of the popo, or (worse still!) my nosey neighbour, who's responsible for the annoying pedestrian island and no parking zone outside my house! GRRRrrrRRRR!!! and all that... I've already had one ticket just round the corner from home.

I was simply trying to dispel the myth that big engine = big power. Oh, and I ride a gixxer, not a Harley.

Lies.
And for the record, most 600s are comparitively tame at lower revs, but a 1000 will bite you anywhere in the rev range.
Tell him 600s are better, and he might live to see his next birthday.

There are many 1000cc bikes out there that have a lot less power than some of the 600s. A n00b will be safer on a 1200cc Harley than on a ZX6R, or other high powered 600cc bike. You have to remember that the highly tuned bikes tend to be quite docile at low to medium revs, giving the impression that they don't have a lot of power. The power tends to kick in quite suddenly at high revs and can easily make someone panic if they're not expecting it.

My first bike was/is a VTR1000F and three years later I have not had issues with it (yet)- but I had ridden around on many mates bikes for a while. It is a V-twin, so a nice linear throttle response, and no powerband.

But It STILL scares the shit out of me - This may not be a bad thing, since a healthy does of respect is what is ALWAYS required. It has 110hp. A 170hp Blade with a monstrous powerband and that much hp is probably just asking for trouble.

Perhaps, but thats not what I was getting at. Going by the sounds of the flatty, I'd be inclined to encourage him to ride a 1000cc and let Darwin have his way.
