View Full Version : Moral dilemma

So a few days ago I ordered a mixed dozen of wine. 4 of 'w', 4 of 'x'. 2 of 'y' and 2 of 'z'. The correct charge hit my visa the day I ordered it as expected.
Went to the courier depot today to pick up my case and was surprised to see 7 boxes awaiting me. Turns out the gave me two DOZEN of the 'y' and 'z' instead of two bottles of each. In short I have 54 bottles of wine where I asked for and paid for 12

My choices are:
1) Ring them on Monday and tell them, "You screwed up ... how do you want to get it back?"
2) Keep quiet and see what happens.

I'm tending towards option 1 but also tempted just to sit on it for a couple of months just to see if they notice. Just don't think the extras will taste that good if I keep quiet though.

My moral compass is spinning a little. What would you do?

I'd go for Option One...only cos I'm so honest, that I wouldn't be able to drink the ill gotten gains without choking on it anyway!

Ha ha. That was going to be the 3rd option in the poll but I decided it's not really an option.

Personally... I'd go for option 1.

Id go with option one, but tell them that it was their mistake, and it is up to them to collect them or arrange something.

It might not be worth their time to come and get it. ball is in their court.
better than the risk of them going through the invoices, and thinking the mistake they made was charging you too little, and charging you for the balance.

Berries

Option 1. If you are lucky they will say keep them and you won't feel guilty when you drink them, or they will at least give you a big discount on your next order.

And like you said, the wine won't taste quite as nice if you have stolen it.

They will almost certainly have it collected at their own cost. Happens all the time in the wine industry - wrong stock etc. Oh and I think it WILL be worth their while...

And yes, you SHOULD tell them, most definitely. As tigertim says, they may well debit your card for the balance otherwise...

Had this situation a few times and always gone with option 1. 9 times out of 10 the vendor has said, thanks for being honest and letting us know. Keep it all as a show of our appreciation.

Dunno if they'll let you keep all that though!

(option 1 really)

Moral issue aside, it's likely they'll catch on sooner or later. If it's later, they'll know that you chose to take it and run. Not a good way to build on a business relationship...

I've had a couple of similar issues recently, never regretted doing the right thing. The best was being paid for an invoice of almost $30,000 - twice.

Only once have I regretted being honest. Following a young guy through a busy shop - his cap on backwards, pants halfway down his butt-crack - you know the type. Some loose money ($20 from memory) fell out of his back pocket. I picked it up, and chased him down - "Hey, mate - you dropped this."

"For fucks sake!" he snarled, snatching it out of my hand, and walking away...

OPTION 3!! :drinkup::laugh:

It honestly is best to ring them mate, you'll feel good about yourself and they will appreciate the honesty (bet ya they say keep a few extra bottles:msn-wink:...just cos you did the right thing)

OPT1...no other choice really (Damn morals!)

What i do when the cops say "oooi you is that piss in that bottle" is I scull the whole lot and say "prove it pig", which usually results in a beating but they can't charge me without taking the bottle to the pigcomputer and doing a spectroalcoholograph analysis on it's arse.

A syringe, a small vacuum pump and a small barrel.

Swap those puppies for watered vineger and THEN return 'em.

It's interesting that you'd want to ask this Oakie.

To me it depends on the final outcome for you, not the wine company (or us). How will you feel if you don't own up? and How will you feel if you do?

FJRider
31st March 2012, 18:55
Depending on what it will cost to return it ... they may just let you keep it.

With the person responsible for sending it ... having the costs already taken out of their severance pay.

I'd be guessing that the profit they can make from selling the additional 42 bottles will be well worth paying for return freight. Keen to see what they say now

Well I said at the start that the extra wine probably wouldn't taste as good as the stuff I'd paid for so I guess that's your answer. The funny thing is if someone asked me this question about themselves, the answer is obvious (1). It is just a little different when it is you that it's happened to and you stand to profit handsomely by someones error and not by a deliberate deception of your own. Temptation is a tricky bugger sometimes.

It's about $380 worth so I think it'll be worth their while arranging for a courier to come to mine and pick it up.

You had to ask? Or are you wanting support for option 2?? Not support. Just curious as to what others would do. You'll note in my original post that I asked "What would you do?", not "What should I do?" (although on reflection I guess I didn't word it that way in the poll questiion).

Then option 1.

If it was something essential to life and health like... I dunno.. hypothetical mail order bottles of milk, then I'd say keep it.

If it was one or two extra bottles on an order of 12 I'd probably keep quiet.

But I would feel compelled to let them know on an error that big. The other issue of course is the possible consequences down stream. A court would definately take the view that you must have known that there was an error, and from there it would be all down hill.

In which case, Option 1, cos it wouldn't be drinkable, anyway.

True, I agree!

But lets rephrase that to: Option 1! "You'll" appreciate your honesty.. :) .... (in the long run, it's who you are and who you really want to be!)

Macontour

Yep, contact them. Karma, "what goes around, comes around" and all that stuff. And you will feel really good inside. And you may avoid someone who made an error really getting hammered.

They're shifting it on at $9 a bottle. 4 wines from a 2008 Chardonnay to a 2011 Pinot Gris but good stuff. We've bought a bit off them and never been disappointed. I guess they're just making room for the new vintage.

I used to take them scuba diving, lie on the bottom legs gripping a rock, inflate, and release. The air expands, then BOOM depth charge! Actually they were a bit tame so I started using beach balls.
