Hi All
I am looking at the idea of a Gopro or similar helmet cam, I am not a techno wizz on whats hot and whats not and there seems to be a number of units available, any tips would be well received, good and bad.
What I would like personally is remote control on the handle bars so on/off would be quick and easy, dont know if it is available.

I have a Gopro HD version 1 and it takes great video. I believe that the Gopro HD 2 has got wireless remote availability and is supposed to be better quality than version 1. I can't comment on any other cams though.

Most people use gopro for a reason... they are the best on the market, there are a few other brands close but not quite.

When the wifi back is released, it'll work on the Version 1 as well.
The only thing it won't do is remote preview on an iPhone or android. That'll only work on a V2.

I'd borrow one first & see what you think before forking out any money.
Jatz bought a go pro which I think he wants to sell. I got a contour HD as part of a promotion & after using it for a couple of mountain bike rides it's lost its appeal.

You should be able to get some more appeal on TradeMe or eBay.
It seems to be a common problem.

Really? I just put gopro in that search box and came up with 7 pages of results including the 2 threads you started. Within the 7 pages there are at least a dozen relevant threads many of which seem to be called 'Helmet Camera' or something similar.

As above, helmet cameras have been done to death here, much like what GPS to buy :), oil and tyres...lol The search function will find the information you require.
I have and still use the GoPro. :) It is good, I enjoy the editing, the viewing at the end of the trip.
I also have a POV 1.5 from the UK www.dogcamspots..... (http://www.dogcamspots....you) You get a bonus 10% discount (enter code) used to be woofwoof :) and VAT free of course.
However....
The appeal has worn off slightly, batteries to carry, SD cards, mounting, dismounting, sometimes it it preferable to ride and take photographs, video can be used with most smart phones, and high end cameras these days...:)
I have all of the mounts, spare batteries (4) LED backing, and the battery mount...for the GoPro.
I prefer the Vio for ease of use, tagging, remote and as it is hard wired to the bike, unlimited useage...It isn't HD, but the nest best thing. Waterproof and pretty wicked technology (Texas Instruments)

I already have the GoProHD and am in the process of getting a VIO POV HD.
The two both give good picture from what I've seen and both have different features... plusses and minuses to both depending upon exactly what you want to do.
GoPro HD has no external wires which is good in some ways but it is quite bulky and heavy to mount on the side of your helmet.
VIO POV HD attaches the smaller unit to the helmet and has more functionallity but is tethered to the recording unit which also allows you to see what you are/have recording. I also really like the sound of the tag feature on the VIO.

The tag feature (loop recording) should be on all cameras to my mind.
One day GoPro will have it. Especially useful once the remote gets here...

Yeah agree but the technology changes just about weekly and technology also gives you a delete key which will save you a lot of time replying to something that has been done to death :niceone:

Best thing is the tagging option, just hit the button on the handlebars or forget to...either way, you get the full coverage.
If you are short of memory, 'tagging' is very helpful :)
Yes, cannot understand why Gopro didn't think of this, other than it is difficult when paragliding, windsurfing or diving the trenches off the Kermadecs. Well, maybe they did....:second:
I run Go-Pro and GPS contour.
Pretty frickin cool to have your speed and elevation displayed over google maps from the contour.
But the Go pro has a good system too.
Choice of one?
GPS contour, small, areodynamic-ish, rotating lens that means you can mount it, then orientate the lens horizon, rain proof without a case, bluetooth to Iphone, and you can see where you've been and how fast you were.:Police: upside, downside

Get a gopro cheap off ebay - got mine hundie cheaper than they were here at the time and came with free 16GB SDHC card. Got the LCD backpac off trademe which is great - like having mini video camera.
That camera in first link - something real false looking with the footage IMHO
Noticed a lot of other camera's fall down when the footage viewed on large TV's - had gopro footage
up on a 55 inch and still clear as day

Colour, fish eye and low light performance.
I rode back through the Maungatapu once and got some cool night footage.
Totally black...
Built in wifi/remote and add use the battery backpack is what I'd do...

The 3 is also smaller, lighter and has wifi built in. But the lack of distortion is the biggest improvement alright.

Was going to get a GoPro 3 Black edition but after reading reviews and seeing some vids, I think I'd still rather get the Sony Action Cam.
Then I realised I don't use my GoPro HD Hero as much as I should and getting something else would just be a waste of money. The original HD Hero is plenty good enough

I'd be happy with the original Hero HD if it did better in low light, had built in wifi/remote, loop recording and less fish eye.
Lighter would be good too.

its still on my shopping list but the bad press is a little disconcerting. Still as long as it can shoot good quality vids, has a remote and does good slowmo thats heaps for me as a noob film maker. Is the hero 3 that bad or should I wait a week or two and see what the pros on here think after using it?

Well they are available now but no remotes at the moment, come on Gopro dont be such a bunch of retards.
I love my Gopro 2 with wifi and remote, one thing I see the hero 3 has inbuilt wifi, so is the main battery powering the camera and wifi, if so I am interest in the run time or lack of it

Bought a Rollei Bullet off Trademe...has a remote...looks similar to a GoPro....has a removeable LCD screen on the back so you can see where you're shooting. The pictuire is fantastic. Came with a 16G micro SD. Tried all the others with my job and this seems to work the best with the remote.

White and Silver yes but not the Black, and to make matters worse GoPro have just pushed out the release date AGAIN, now the Black is not available till the 7th of December, but even then this is still only "estimated". Its getting a bit ridiculous, that's the fourth release date extension, I now trust GoPro's release dates as much as I trust Winston Peters...

Bought a silver edition while was in the USA a few weeks ago. Thought about waiting for the black but decided the silver was more than enough for my lack of movie making talent. Now that the Iphone app is working things are better still. Just looking for a waterproof handlebar mount for the phone so I can see it when I am riding. Be interesting to see the battery drain on both the GoPro and the phone once I get it set up.

Because the GoPro website kept continually pushing out the release date I rang a NZ GoPro supplier to find out the what the deal is. I spoke with the owner of NZ Camera & Digital to find out arrival dates; the Black units and a bunch of accessories are on the water as you read this so as long as they are not held up in customs they should be here in NZ by the 10th of December
He was a bloody good bloke, very helpful, even offered me the use of his demonstrator Black unit that GoPro sent him if the units don't arrive in time, how good is that!! He also mentioned that he is happy to help Kiwibikers out with free delivery and a free carry bag (just mention you are a Kiwibiker). He did mention the first shipment of Blacks would unlikely see the shelves as people are putting their names down to secure the units, his advice was to give him a call and put your name down on one.

This is one of the better comparison vids I have seen for the Hero3 range

The Silver is a good unit, but the Black is just the business
