My red Ducati 848 was stolen on friday night on haining st in wellington. it was in the open car park just behind my apartment building on taranaki st. Has it got a hidden kill switch anywhere, or is it just hard to start?
Halds
2nd April 2012, 09:48
you'd never get it started without the keys. as has transponder key.
my apartment is only 20metres from where it was parked. with the exhaust on it i would've heard it start so think it would've gone on back of ute or in a van.

yeah makes me think something is going on with the triumph stolen only 100metres around the corner. And when my bike is usually always locked up in another carpark on taranaki st which is swipe access. I came home friday night and parked up behind my apartment building cnr taranaki st and haining st as had been out to see damon at cycle works to get exhaust redone and want to go for ride in the morning so didn't put it in garage. The place it was parked, its only been there 4/5 times so makes me think its a neighbour been watching out for it to turn up again

Why does nobody invest a couple of hundred in a GPS tracking box?

Why does nobody invest a couple of hundred in a GPS tracking box?
A cheap method of tracking...a smart phone hardwired and sealed on the bike (hidden), with tracking software installed.
You just jump onto a website, tell it the phones been stolen and the software turns th phone and its GPS on, then tells you its location.
Available for i-phone, android and MS smart phones....and there are various free services on offer (I use Lookout on mine :shifty:)

you'd get change from $50...or free with some plans, plus you can use it as a MP3 player etc and back up phone.(depending on location of device)
But yeah, fully agree mate, GPS is def the way to go ay...just have to hide the chosen unit well!

Yea but how often do you have to charge smartphones these days, especially with GPS etc... turned on with apps running in the background. Good idea mind you.

Public execution should be brought back for the thieves!
There are lot of cheap (under $200) GPS tracking options available on trademe. Ive got one on my classic mini. works like a charm.
you can track where your car / bike is anytime anywhere and even remotly turn the ignition off. (when stationary or while moving on motorway at 100km, is up to you)

If you have a car :innocent: It would only be a problem for extended periods of time, but a proper tracker would be far easier.

As my sexy Biatch nodrog has stated, you can hook them up to a charger!...or even better hard wire them to the battery if its a permanent fixture (with the correct resistance etc)
...the phone dosn't have to be turned on! (the software can contact the phone even when its turned off and turn it and the GPS on for you)
Its cheap & effective GPS tracking, but as sil3nt stated, you can invest in a proper water proof GPS tracking unit for under $200...a great investment for peice of mind...and for tracking down that piece of shit that stole your baby

i think its got to be one of our neighbours, given the frequency i park there and the triumph going missing. ramset on the corner have security cameras but only covering their carparks so said it wouldn't have picked anything up.
Any update on your bike?

sounds like there is a bit of an operation on the go. someones pinching rare-ish/expensive/exotic bikes.. I wonder if they are being loaded onto containers and headin out of the country?
fuck that sucks!!!
fingers crossed for a recovery

Yes. That container is still around here somewhere.

2nd April 2012, 15:31
Jeez. Sorry about the loss. Clearly you guys don't chain your bikes or lock up. No wonder everyone looked at me funny when I chained the scooter on The Terrace wile on training. Back in SA I used to put a padlock through R1. Did not trust mall security there. Being an island what do they do here? Strip it for parts? No borders to cross to sell it.

2nd April 2012, 15:35
Would customs not check a container?

They are either ridden or sold for parts. I highly doubt anything leaves the country.

Who knows. Datatag etc don't seem to be used here. Crims could just break it for parts then flog bit by bit on ebay a year or two down the line. Easy money.
What I do know is that I wouldn't leave a tricked up Ducati parked up in a quiet spot overnight without it being alarmed, physically attached to something immovable and in view of a security camera........actually...fuckit...no...I just wouldn't leave a Ducati parked up in a quiet spot overnight.
Without risking a Katman like response......a bit of common bloody sense goes a long way. Shit like this bumps up everyones insurance premiums.

It has been transferred into a 1098 frame and has an ohlins steering damper on it. no other 848 would be like this

You can advertise your missing bike on the Motorcycle Trader website and in the magazine for as little as $10 until found.
Visit www.diyads.co.nz or call Ross on 0800 872 337 and he'll do it for you.
Best way to let the riding community and any potiential buyers out there know about it. Plus if its in print its around for months, even years as most people collect the magazine.

I know this doesn't help after the fact but some of the KB'ers that are spending big bucks on their pride & joy rides, should be investing a measley $99 into a GPS tracker (Prepay sim required too).
http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/gps/automotive/auction-461853723.htm
This tracker has motion alarm text direct to your cell phone and onboard battery backup should the thieves drop the bikes main battery connecter straight away.
From anywhere you can text your tracker and it will respond with GPS coords. Smartphones can plot the response straight to google maps.
For less than $150 total, those thiefs would have probably gotten caught.
The above tracker is nearly identical to the $400 version mongoose tracker that comes in the same casing with same features.
Anyways, Will keep my eye out.....

Read a story recently where a UK biker activated their killswitch mode. Bike lost power on the motorway and caused a massive accident with one fatality (Not the bike thief). IMHO Killswitches are bad options.
Any chance someone can pinpoint the two locations (Close to exact please) from which the bikes (848 & Triumph) went missing recently?

also to update
when i got up 7.15 there were workers in the carpark so thought they had moved my bike so ran down. spoke to them, one guy who had just turned up said he had seen a new ducati parked down tory st a when he drove down there coming to haining st a 7am. so he drove me down there but there was no bike there. he said it was on tory st between wakefield and courtenay place.
seems strange that someone tried to break the steering lock on the ninja if there weren't wheeling it somewhere. steering lock wasn't on on my duc

With a fresh WoF and paid-up rego as well. We don't want the police pulling them over and the thief being held up for no good reason.

I don't mean to sound rude, but judging by your actions you were asking for the bike to be stolen. Perhaps for insurance purposes. But even if genuine, mate...... You made it sooo easy for the thieves to steal it. Might as well left the key in it. If I had a bike like that and so heavily modded, there is no way it would left my sight for a minute. i'd have it chained to the floor if needed with alarm and GPS tracking. But that is me, security concious. I do hope you find it and I also do hope you have learned a valuble lesson. And I also hope the thieveing bastards are cought and given a severe beating.
Just my 2 cents

My point was that bike like that needs to be kept well secured. Insurance or no insurance, Not suggesting that you want to commit insurance fraud, but exotic bikes are on every thieves wish list. Why make it so easy for them.
