View Full Version : Mangatutu Hot Springs (Hawkes Bay) Campout - April 21/22

This is more of a weather-dependent concept than an actual organised ride, but here goes:
April 21st/22nd, we are thinking of going and camping at the Mangatutu Hot Springs (Puketitiri, inland from Napier - at the end of a looong windy gravel road ).
If the weather is really good we’ll camp at Mangamate Waterfall near Minginui on the Friday, then head off from there Saturday morning, or we’ll just start from Clint’s in Rotoiti on Saturday morning. We’ll make our way to Hawkes bay, taking in some interesting gravel along the way. Camp at the hot springs Saturday night; cook food, soak in the springs, talk about motorbikes, then a cruisy run home on Sunday, maybe via the Gentle Annie.
People from other parts of the island are welcome to meet up with us somewhere along the way on Friday or Saturday, or come up with your own interesting route to the hot springs, and meet us there.
As I’ve said, the plan is loose, and is very weather dependent. But don’t let that put you off. Also don’t be put off if you don’t have the perfect self sufficient camping setup, there are tables and wood fired bbqs at the hot springs, and I’m sure we could share things like cookers between the haves and the have-nots.

Is there a sealed route with minimal gravel for us roadies?

Nope. The last bit of the road into the camp is 15km+ of gravel, it can get fairly rough & there are a couple of fords so anyone coming on a road bike would want to be fairly confident off the tar. Going up from Napier to Puketitiri until you run out of blacktop & back is a great ride though if you are ever in the area.
Cheers

I have an organised ride on the 22nd (unfortunately) but if you have to postpone due to weather then I will be in. I've had a soak in the pools and its very relaxing and a nice part of the world.

Would love to join you guys for this ride, but a little far away for me to duck down on the Sat and back on sunday.
The hot pools are super hot, but enjoyable.

I'm tentatively keen.... if it's dry:baby:
I'm not into camping or public bathing - so this ride is for me! I may even be converted:oi-grr:
It would be a good opportunity to try out my new tent - which was bought with camping off the bike in mind.

If it's not dry... the ride's not on :baby:
It will likely be dark by the time we are hot-pooling, so it won't seem that public. Wear earplugs, and you'll feel like you have the place to yourself
I've heard a lot about the new tent. It will be great to see it in its natural habitat :sunny:

Just had an update from Al who went through the Waipunga last weekend, apparently a much nicer bypass has been constructed around the washed out crossing so anybody with less skillz or a big bike wanting to join us for the ride over shouldn't be put off.
Cheers

Yeah, we went through the museum a couple of years ago. Well worth the visit
Will get photos of the hot springs road for you.

We're not going through Waikaremoana; we'll be doing a bit of exploring in the forest near Minginui, then going through the Waipunga and down the Napier Taupo Rd - maybe we'll run into you along the way (figuratively speaking :shit:)

I saw Gus heading up SH2 this morning on his way towards the Wairarapa.
I would have liked to do this one but the required planetary alignments didn't happen. I'm keen to do a few camping off the bike weekends.

Organise something central-ish, and we'll see what we can do
Camping-off-the-bike weather is rapidly disappearing though.

What a great weekend you & Clint had. Fab photo's & a great write up. If I knew you cooked like that Rosie, I would have come just for the meals & with extra wine :msn-wink:
I was unsure if I would be riding in the weekend as I was waiting for a replacement tail light. And alas your ride clashed with Ross's Sunday ride.
Apologies.

I'd packed up all the food earlier in the week, while Nic was still deciding whether to come or not, so there would have been enough for three - especially if you'd brought wine :niceone:
