So its about time I got the bike out on a holiday so 18th Im heading north with the boy. We have arranged to stay in Waingaro and will be heading to Auckland the following day on Sh22. ( I hear good things about it)

We are planning on going to see the dragons at vector arena at 3pm. (the main reason for the trip)

So not being like super confident in Auckland (google will help) is there any suggestions about what a guy and a 12 yr old might like to see while we are up that way?

Isn't there some skinny-dipping beach up there somewhere? A 12yo boy'd probably like THAT!

SH22 is a goat track... remember that, respect it, and all will be good. On wet days, there is no grip because the road is shiny, on dry days the road melts.

I'd suggest you guys pop up the Sky Tower in the lift (make sure you stand at the doors - you'll know why after) to the Observation deck and stand on the glass looking down. You've also got the climb over the Harbour Bridge and you can jump off it too, if you're so inclined. Kelly Tarltons might also be worth while...

There are plenty of cheap activities in Auckland, and even more that burn a hole in your pocket.
If you're keen on the outdoors, a ferry trip to Rangitoto or Waiheke is an awesome way to check out the scenery and see something new.

no offence.. but what you call goat tracks.. we call highways down here!

Is sky tower free? I think thats on the to do list anyhow.. just because well its there! I am definitely not jumping off any bridge. we will have about 5-6 hours which sounds like alot but really.. its not in Auckland central so doubt we have the time for KT. (I went there like 100 years ago) but good suggestions.

Been down your way plenty of times... maybe you'll catch it on a good day, otherwise, I'll see what you think after you've done it :D

Sky Tower isn't free (there is a casino there after all :) ): http://www.skycityauckland.co.nz/Attractions/Skytower/Admissions.html

I was through the southern section of SH22 yesterday. Apart from some new seal (unswept), it was in pretty good condition. A lot narrower further north and there is the odd off camber corner as well.

Little vid HERE (http://youtu.be/l0BPDzg2TZM).

I prefer going north to going south on this road - don't ask me why - just one of those things.

Come a bit further north. The accomodation is free and the food is free. We have beaches and we even have a Marine reserve where you can wade out knee deep and have HUGE fish swimming around your legs. You are not allowed to feed them anymore, but I have heard they like frozen peas :innocent:

North Head tunnels could be a go - nice and cheap and cool for a 12 year old. Just get there before the maori's claim is settled.

+1 And take a torch too so you can have a good look around in the tunnels.

Don't waste your money on the Skytower, go up Mt Eden (The extinct volcano, not the prison) and you get just as good a view with more room to run around.

I rode state HW 22 Last week major road works fixing the drops and holes other wise is a fun road that keeps you awake. At normal road legal pace its a walk in the park so unless your setting speed records you will be fine. Just keep and eye out for fresh gravel

Mermaid bar & Showgirls are around the downtown area, or if you prefer upper Queen Street area there's the Whitehouse there.
Too bad I'm not sure about the suburbs, but I hear there are indeed places. Maybe some other kiwibikers have some info on this.
