It creates an energy - but if no-one or no thing (with audible
senses) are there to hear it - then it hasn't made a noise or
a sound (sound is something that is heard)

What if a deaf person was there? did it make a noise?

ummm isnt it a vibration of the air in waves!?!

sound "is an alternation in pressure, particle displacement, or particle velocity propagated in an elastic material" (Olson 1957) or series of mechanical compressions and rarefactions or longitudinal waves that successively propagate through media that are at least a little compressible (solid, liquid or gas but not vacuum).

Isn't 'noise' the result of airwave vibrations interacting with our ear drums - therefore if they was nothing to interpret the vibrations in the air - wouldn't all you would have is vibrations in the air (not noise)???

Aaaah...a metaphysical thread. This could be interesting......

Leads us to quantum physics and other mind-bending stuff. These are not my words (it's about the Copenhagen interpretation)

Nature at a sub-atomic level does not conform to normal logic. An electron ..shows signs of being a particle..but it also shows signs of being a wave (so-called wave-particle duality)..and it cannot be a wave and a particle at the same time. Wave particle duality is nature's way of informing us that we have no right to impose our human concepts on the sub-atomic level...An electron is not a thing until we observe it.. If so does this not imply that reality depends on our observations?...and does this not imply that reality is created by human thoughts??

Hence, no observer, no sound. That's the answer according to metaphysical idealism...

By "no one being there to hear it" I assume that means humans - it would say "nothing" if it meant all creatures. Therefore there will still be creatures with aural sensory organs to hear the thud. And even if there has been a nuclear holocaust, there would still be those damn cockroaches around to hear it.

My $0.02 worth: it depends what you define as sound. Does molecular compression and expansion in the range 20-20,000 Hz constitute sound? What do you mean by 'nobody'? If an animal herd it would it be making a sound to that animal.

Ultimately the point of a measurement (in this case by your ear) is to make a decision, and depending on the risks or benefits involved you take an action, which may or may not be appropriate.

In light of the above point I'd have to say 'who cares?'. :whocares:

Yeah well I'm not much into it myself either but I am fascinated by some of the scientific stuff surrounding quantum physics (unfortunately handicapped in my ability to understand it AT ALL due mainly I suppose to ...stupidity).

Mainstream cosmological science now encompasses stuff that really bends the mind. It is kind of metaphysical stuff, but it's real science. Try googling subjects like the Big Bang or Quantum Jump.Dark matter. Anti-matter. Space-time continuum.

Our old ways of understanding things just don't cut the mustard.

Well...this could take a while...... Na, just joking. I'm the wrong guy to attempt it.

But that is the wave-particle duality thing. It is apparently not understood, but can be demonstrated experimentally in the photo-electric effect experiment you are (probably) talking about. One source I referred to said about it "one of the most fundamental principles of science seems to be mocked by these results: the notion that we are dealing with, and can know the details of, the objective world". I thought that was kinda cool. Comes back to the tree in the forest, eh?

But I'm no scientist, and am just repeating parrot-fashion what I've read and only partially understood.

It makes a sound, ie the particles oscillating away from the source, but I'm not sure about "noise". If sound is the same thing as noise then yes it does make noise, if noise has to be heard to actually exist then no it doesn't make any "noise" but it does make a sound.

As for the quantum physics, just don't even go there. Bosons, Fermions, Positrons, Leptons, Muons and everything else you can thing of that ends in "ons". I passed the paper and thats all i care

:

heres one. Place a tape recorder in the forest ....it picks up the sound/noise it made while falling down when no one was there.

The vibration may have caused another plant to topple - if sound waves
are what caused the toppling....then the tree falling made a sound

I reakon you are right "is sound the same definition as noise"
