I'm keen if you've got a trailer/truck/van to pick me and my bike up with.

I've got a 1973 TS185 so I'm just a slow trail rider. I usually go to either Weedons Ross Rd by West Melton at the river bank or McLeans Island.

So did you get anything hooked up?
There are several rides on in the coming weekends on myrides.co.nz (http://www.myrides.co.nz/trail-rides-xidc53532.html) in the nearby areas. Entrys range from $40 to $50 per day or $60 for two days Queens Birthday weekend ride.
Bunch of us planning to go to the Port Levy one this Sunday so I hear.

Port Levy Trail ride was fantastic today, just enough challenge in the Main loop (42km long) to keep us enjoying ourselves without stressing.
I didn't do any enduro deviations, them too much hard work for me.
Great views too.
Thanks Peeteey for the company. Nice to catch up with Liv too.

Picture attached is the track file from my gps displayed in google earth.

KX250f - four stroke, if I read the specs and links for the correct bike it should get 100km+ out of a tank.
My CRF230 with me at the helm does 100km+ on the main tank before I touch the reserve tap.

There are a few open bits on most these rides where you can get up in the gears and make some distance unlike a MX track.
I'd be surprised if you couldn't get at least 60/70km out of it even with a thirsty setup and heavy right wrist.
Of course only one way to find out really, test it.

Hey man, keep checking http://www.myrides.co.nz/trail-rides-xidc53532.html from time to time, they tend to list all the trail rides, and others, going on.
There's one Queens Bday weekend (next weekend) on both the Sunday and the Monday and then one on the 17th out at Waipara. I think I'm gonna aim for this Monday (if I can square it with the missus, unlikely) and Waipara. Anyone wanna share the cost of a rental trailer? Unless anyone going out has one we can use/hitch a ride on?

you will struggle to get 100km's out of a kx250f unless you are very conservitive on the fuel, , i would guess 80km would be the max sort of range at trail ride pace,

As long as a full tank will get you 60km or so, you should be fine.
Almost every trial ride is structured as a loop (or multiple loops) that start/finish at the car park, allowing you to re-fuel etc.

Most people fill the bike and take a full fuel can, stored at the car. Top up each lap, or each other lap on the short laps.

I think I went to a Suzuki ride a few years ago which was advised as 65km for the full lap, with plenty of hills.
It may have been Dalethorpe. A few MX'ers ran out of fuel. Since that, laps seem to have been kept shorter.

Great ride Dalethorpe, if you like gnarly forestry on hills and great views from the hill tops. I hope its on sometime this winter.

Am still considering the Balcairn one this coming weekend but it will have to be Sunday for me as I have a Lees Valley based Adventure ride Monday on the Transalp.

Second hand info I have is that Balcairn will be a bit more user friendly with family by passes with in reach of the familys and more enduro options off the main loop.
Probably a better one for the in-experienced than Port Levy was.

Ha ha, damn! I was aiming for the Monday as it means I could spend Sunday with the missus pain and ache free!
I'll see what I can sort, would be cool to go for another hoon so soon after the last one.

...and it's decided, if all goes to plan I will be at the Balcairn ride on Sunday.

There's a vid here someone has posted from 2011 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ax0RLyOCLgY) I think is the same place, not saying the course will be the same but similar I imagine.
Much more open and rolling than Port Levy was, plus the deviation options not in the video of course.

I did the ride last year, fantastic area and terrain, awesome enduro deviations, the guys put in a lot of effort to make a good ride clearing the gullies and creeks etc, I will be going Sunday, definitely recommend it.

It will be an interesting ride if the weather is damp, less tyre pressure - higher gears - what could go wrong, only all of it:mad:

Shut up you!! Your problem is you ride the blue (or what ever colour they use for super expert Enduro nutters) markers :weird: so you're just looking for trouble anyway aye. :msn-wink:

I know we will be a little more north but Christchurch has fine weather all the way until Monday on Metservice right now.

Ah yes the blue arrows - bring them on, I wouldn't say trouble, well um ok maybe yeah all right trouble might be partly right.

Weather looks ok for now, possible even NW

Seriously, it's like 34km (25minutes) from Belfast (at the edge of town) this weekend.
Unless you are planning to stick to flat ground like the Waimak they don't get much closer than this.
I'll spend more time crossing town than on the highway.

Having said that, the one big reason I will not be going to the Waipara one on the 17th is because my Trail ride budget will be well blown after this weekend so I'll be back on the flat for a while after this one too.

Did the Balcairn ride last year and had a blast....They were short loops (25k approx.) The endro's loops where good. Defenitly more begineer friendly.
Sadly can't make it this time....
Enjoy it!!!

Excellent! Liv, we should all hook up and ride together. Would be even cooler with a group!
Am hoping to ride both days seeing as it is shorter than usual and doesn't look too challenging in general. Will see but will def be there on Sun! :headbang:

My thinking was shorter laps means more laps and maybe a look at one or two Enduro bits if the main loop is too easy.
I want to be there by 9:30 this time in hope of starting my first lap by 10. Messing around with cameras and getting the gear on always seems to take forever so I've left everything more or less set up. Getting fuel organised tomorrow instead of on the way and already remembered to put my tool kit with the gear this time.
Tool kit is no good to me left on the Transalp when I'm on the CRF

Forecast does'nt look too bad :-)

Enjoy the Sunday ride Guys, take it easy

Could be a spot of drizzle Sunday but nothing to worry about.
Monday should be better but I'm riding the Transalp elsewhere that day.
Well have a go at cutting up the track good and proper for you tomorrow.
Hope you have a good one too.

Hi Guys

Had a good ride today at Balcairn, 6 enduro loops, 23.30 km including the enduro loops, not sure what the main loop was by it self.

Excellent ride, plenty of fun in the gully's and I am nucken fackered now.

If you are thinking about going Monday then DO IT, other wise you will miss a good ride

I have attached a picture off fresh maps

Yep highly recomended ride. Bit of mud, some hills etc but not as harsh as last weeks one unless perhaps you take the enduro deviations.
On the third lap even after the threat of a few spots of drizzle I reckon the track was drying out.

My lap times were 57minutes first lap with some long stops included.
28 minutes second lap where I jumped on behind some workmates who were riding a bit faster than my usual pace.
38 minutes we'll call our cool down lap and would have been a more typical run with only one 'look at the view' stop included.

Main loop as measured by GPS so with all the wiggles actual will be slightly longer, about 14km+ gps error.

And finally I'll take Trials Rider's Fresh maps pic and add my main loop in purple to see the differences.... attached.

Here's some pics from the ride today, vid to come ...

Honestly, if you can, go do this ride! Was a great fun short track (17k-ish?) with a good mix of fun stuff.

While waiting for saussies to cook, got chatting with friendly fella who turned out to be Mark, the owner of the farm.

So so so much better than port levy for a beginner. Had a great ride besides my crash and concussion. Due to that made the decission to just do the 1 lap but went and had a small play at the waimak on the way home.

Did anyone ride it today??

Transalper/Peetey check out my crash vid on FB :)

Not the hill I thought you crashed on Liv.
As on FB I was feeling your pain until I read the "ow" was from the electric fence more than the tree. That cracked me up a bit.

OFF ROAD RIDE-
Original poster 'Trial Rider' has posted intent to do 'the Waipara Pub Run' on Sunday in the Adv forum.
It's a river bed/beach ride good for Trail Bikes so I hear.
The posts here (clicky). (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/133817-Looking-for-Christchurch-Adv-Rides?p=1130335917#post1130335917)
Could probably be done on lighter ADV bikes too (imagining sand and soft pebble riverbed) I guess but haven't done it so don't know for sure.
