How learner friendly will this be?

Extremely.

The only hard part for me now, is getting to the start point, from town. Haha.
Or somehow get my bike out to upper hutt, and ride over from there.

I can't realistically commit until I know if work is opening on that day anyway. If it is, I'm screwed.

wear a high viz and display your L plate that way people will (read should) keep an eye out for ya.
BTW did you get someone to look over your new toy and set it up for you?

GingerMidget
15th April 2012, 14:12
New toy is already perfect for me. I don't own a hi-vis. I've got white down the sides of my sleeves and shoulders, and I'm pretty easy to spot. My l-plate isn't technically a bike one, nor is it very legal. But its there. I had to mangle it to make it fit, and not cover my indicator. But its there! haha.

I'm just plotting the best way to get there, that doesn't involve too much scaring myself. First big ride!

give yourself every chance you can to let people know you're out there and new to it, white stripes won't tell anyone that you're new to it, even at night, you've only got one life, that's why they have L plates.

Please come and support the local ambulance…you may need them one day.

Sorry I am unable to make this ride as i am doing the dawn parade in Masterton with my grandfather.

At age 38 (42 now) I dropped dead at home with a cardiac arrest with CPR from my wife the great people at 111 call centre and quick responce from the ambulance crews :first: they gave me a fighting chance at hospital.

I now have a defibulator in my chest gave up rugby and started to ride motorbikes as a part of a new lease on life

Fully support this cause and would urge anyone and everyone to support them as you or your family may need them when you least expect. On the road, at home, work or sport and they will be there for you so be there for them. :doctor:

GingerMidget
15th April 2012, 21:52
I've needed them before when I decided to head butt a tree midway down hill in a mountain bike race. Then again shoulder barging a tree. Amazing service, that truly deserves all support they can get!

15th April 2012, 22:17
One thing to point out however, large group rides are not usually learner friendly, given the large group format, which takes more concentration than a normal ride, with so many at varying skill levels.

However, I don't know the details of this ride, format, and numbers etc... just thought I would point out...

I'm doing a test run to the hutt to have lunch with my grandparents today, so I'll know if I want to attempt a largeish group ride on wednesday later today. I'll probably be sitting there wednesday morning having a whinge about how I'm nervous and all that crap, but I'll probably still end up going. I've done over 300kms already! Not bad for 9 days of ownership

Take the 'average' and work it out on the fact i didn't actually ride every day. I rode saturday, sunday and monday and today. Its now up to about 400.

Nah wasn't me in petone yesterday, I was staying off my bike with that hangover.

I did ride from ngaraunga to melling via the motorway! Nothing too dramatic, so I will be doing the wednesday ride at this stage.

Just keep an eye out for a black Katana and come up and say hello. Quite happy to ride your tail to give you some protection. There will be a number of the Bronze members turning out so we'll look after you. I think the Bronze members are meeting at the duck pond Avalon and riding to mainstone en mass. Sounds grand rustyrobot by my calculations we would need to meet at 9:45 to arrive at the park ontime.

Also if we have more than a handful of people, parking may become an issue.

9:45 sounds about right - but you could be on to something with the parking. Will have a bit of a brainstorm on central(ish) cafes with a spare bit of concrete nearby.

No registration as such. Bikes just tend to accumulate along the Park frontage and there will be someone there wondering around (or being swamped) selling the badges. It's usually Buzz (who rides a trike and looks like Colonel Sanders).

The whole affair is pretty social and informal.

Many thanks to all who turned out for the ride (estimates are 220'ish departing from Maidstone Park) and our sincere condolences to the friends and family of the rider. (I don't believe he was a Ulysses member as stated in one of the reports)

The numbers would probably be a record turnout for this ride and a cheque for $1400 was passed to the WFA, so the generosity of those who attended is much appreciated.

We only had about half as many badges as required so more will be ordered and sent out to those who ordered and paid for them.

A pair of gloves were found in Thorndon. If anyone hears of someone missing them, PM me with the brand and where your bike was parked and I'll arrange to get them back to you.

Thanks & Regards, JM

Hey man, that's a hard one. I haven't told my boy what happened, although of course it was obvious to him that someone got hurt. Something inside of me suggests that it's wrong to hide it from him. Tough to know. Hope it goes okay with your lad.

As others have said, if I was to talk about the ride other than this tragic event (is that possible?) - I would say that it was a really great experience. Nice to meet some of the names from here, enjoy the gorgeous weather and drool over some tasty bikes. GM lead us from town to Avalon and luckily I managed to keep up with her furious pace. All in all it makes me all the more glad that there were so many of us there to support this good cause.

I have often thought about what it might take to organise a First Aid for Bikers course/seminar. I'm sure if a group of us chipped in we could cover cost of venue and tutor.

I was about 30 bikes behind the incident although I didn't see what happened. All I knew was when the riders in front of me all braked and a couple of the pillion riders put thier hands up to show they were stopping. Not a good sight to see a fellow rider down. Initially it was thought by others around me that due to the bike being on the opposite side, he wasnt with our group and had hit the barrier and come over the top.
My pillion is a health and safety trainer so immediately jumped off and started organising the traffic. Bloody old woman in the front car about 30mtrs behind us just sat complaining that she wanted to get through.

I was thankful for the arm signals from other riders ahead of me signalling to stop.. for some reason I thought the bikes were slowing for a regroup but then saw what happened just as I stopped. Gutted, condolences to all involved. The riding up until that point was going well, though I'm so nervous in group situations and maybe even more so now.
We abandoned the ride and went for a drink to settle the nerves. Was great to see so many different bikes and riders out, epic turnout :)

Thanks mate, i have talked it through with people already, tho i recently returned from the UK serving as a police officer over there so unfortently had to deal with alot of similar situations which tends to help.

The Biker has now been named...

Very sad day ... i was on the ride and its kinda put me off riding with others...

Dont let it mate, many others including me riding in such organised events for 15 years will tell you this is a rare thing.

RIP and my condolences to the family.

I wish to thank those other bikes who stopped and assisted myself and the doctor with the CPR we all tried our best and it was not a easy situation to deal with.

Dear Rachel.

We on Kiwibiker are very sorry to hear of your loss. We all hurt when one of our own has fallen as a rider, but it is never what the personal friends and family are feeling on such a huge level. I hope you have some wonderful love and support around you, and that your child has very precious memories of their daddy. Such a tragidy and sympathies are with you.

Kind regards, Katie

This is going to be media fest when they find out more bikes went down at the Pauatahanui roundabout, not twenty kms from the first incident, then how many times the speed camera went off down the Ngaraunga gorge, and said photos will show the following distances etc etc.

That's an interesting statement.

I was the lead rider on the day. There were no bikes that went down at the Pauatahanui roundabout in this group that I am aware of. By this time we were well split up so I would appreciate details if you have them.

Speeds down the Ngauranga Gorge from the front were sub-80kph. As lead rider I kept my speed to less than 5kph of the speed limit for the entire trip.

It is a great shame we had a rider killed. Any suggestion that the riders were being irresponsible is unhelpful.

I lead a Ride once...300 + bikes and kept the speed to 80kph...what happens with large numbers though, is the group gets so fragmented that those anywhere from half way back in the group, need to ride at well over the speed limit to catch up. And they do it.
When we looped back, the bikes way behind were waving their arms at me (from across the M/Way) telling me to slow down.
I slowed to 40-50kph on the M/Way (which is dangerous) in order for the bikes to bunch up.
I wont ever join an annual event here in Auckland for that very reason...last time I did, bikes were at 130-140 KPH at times...then without warning, down to 50KPH..all the while, the lead rider/s have no idea of whats going on behind them.

I was one of the last riders through the gravel road and back on to the Highway. The only other bike I saw go down was a chap on a HD that fell off (he was almost stopped) coming off the gravel onto the tar seal. I ran up the wee hill to help lift his bike upright. He was unharmed. Other than that I certainly never saw the result of any 'carnage' post main incident.

My apologies, it was the Paramata Roundabout, 2 bikes.

I was part of the tail end of the group. It must have happened and been cleaned up in about 30 seconds, or they weren't part of the actual ride.

Actually I was the tail.

so you're saying from Kennif at the front to you at the tail end; the spread of bikes was 30 seconds?

Between the end of the group, and my little bunch, there was a couple of minutes. We ended up stopping at the mobil by the roundabout and nobody mentioned anything about accidents to us. Go figure.

Post 91 wasn't me, and I'm not talking about either an HD OR gravel. I'm talking about paremata.

Thanks for answering that GM. I don't know how we could be confused as being the same person lol..

Jelly I was good thirty minutes or so behind the main group as was the Ófficial Tail'. It was me that helped the HD rider at post #91. I rode the route and never saw any other evidence of bikes being down. (not to say it never happened).

The one that ran parallel to river road, directly below the scene. I was on the grey GSX1250FA has the 'my family' stickers on the top box of me and the dog.

absolutly no confusion GM; said they were at the mobil station and if there was any accidents they must have been informed so surely they were discussing the incident you mentioned in post 91 then, otherwise it never happened, simple logic????

also Kennif who was at the front and seems to know all about the ride but didn't know about that bit (post 91)

all seems to be confusing doesn't it?

Thanks mate. Got you now. Yes I was the ride organiser for Wellington Ulysses but I hadn't been told about that little off. Or any other. Mind you, another bloke on a retro-Triumph (with his wife on the back) fell off parking at Davis Street. He is a Ulyssian so he will be fined. Oh yes.

Who hasn't forgotten to put their feet down at least once in their life time when stopped -

Or at least found the ground to not quite be where one expected...

Um...

Look - this is a terrible situation and I could bang on forever about group rides BUT it happened and thats a fact. Its also a reality that given the collective miles accumulated in a group ride that it was almost an inevitability.

I've often supported this ride - there are a 1000 reason why I didnt do this one

I'll make it a priority to support the next one.

You have to have a certain something to persist with motorbikes and resilience (SP) is one...

I assisted the Triumph rider who had the oops parking in town, he said his leg gave out when he came to a standstill, he didn't forget to put his leg down.. If you do fine him bear in mind his outstanding tolerance of his wife who just kept asking him "what happened?" over and over, even after he had told her and pointed to his knee.. he deserves some kind of award for that tolerance.. when he saw the damage he even knew exactly how much his broken headlight support bracket would cost ($186 if I remember correctly) but thankfully that was the only visible damage..

aside from the obvious I had a good time on the ride yesterday, I was impressed by the turnout and walked the lineup of bikes checking them out on both sides of the road. I enjoyed the ride, the Pauatahanui Inlet road in particular was great as was seeing the massive line of headlights behind me on the motorway. Thanks to BRONZ for the pre-event meetup and ride (cheers Byron) and to Ulysses for the event.. I loved the pre-ride talk, relaxing and humourous. it is a shame it was somewhat prophetic. my condolences go to the family of the deceased rider and my support goes to those who were involved in, or witnessed, the accident and the post accident situation..

I am not sure if anyone has heard or been advised, but the initial investigation is showing he had his bikes immobilizer in his pocket, it would appear the bikes alarm / immobilizer has been triggered and caused the bike to stop in its tracks. The initial diagnostics on the bike show the alarm was active and I am sure with further testing they will be able to confirm it. If this is the case its an even more tragic event than it already is... My thoughts and condolences go out to the friends / family of the rider. If this post is not appropriate I understand and can be deleted.

Would something like this cut the power to the bike much like if it run out of gas or the battery cut out etc?
