16th April 2012, 19:22
Calandar event and info here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=3003&day=2012-4-25&c=1
If the weather's good we'll head north to Opononi. If the weather's shite we won't.
Time: Leave 8:30 return whenever
Route: via the twisties - direction to be decided
Gathering point: Caltex Dairy Flat (same place as the Auckland regular sunday ride north)
Who: anyone comfortable at sustained highway speeds, doesn't fall off on corners, can do 200kms between stops and happy to ride 600 odd kms in a day.
If you actually state you'll be attending then we'll be more likely to wait for you if you are running late, if you don't then we won't.
Like most rides there will be different levels of riders some fast some not (I'm not) just find your spot in the group and enjoy the day.
Cheers

Good chance to take the new bike out for a ride instead of Qkkid riding it more than me!:shit:
However if the weather is shite, I'll rather stay home and catch up on paperwork, I'll get enough wet stuff in June

Your in for an interesting day - in a nutshell;
Ride through the fabulous Waipoura Forest (home of Tane Mahita - the worlds largest living Kauri, it's huge!)
Probably have a lunch break at Opononi then head back towards home via Twin Bridges (great bit of road provided there's no roadworks)
All roads will be tarsealed with plenty of opportunity to fuel up - as long as you can do at least 200km on a tank. As mentioned we'll be heading north by around 8.30ish and could be back around mid-late afternoon but if you need to head back home early, consider joining us partway.
There's usually some kind of story to be told after one of these rides ;) just ask Qkkid or DMNTD.
NinjaNanna

Depends on whether Steve loses his wallet again
No seriously, it'll be about a 6.5hrs in the saddle with probably about 1.5hr stop for lunch at Opononi plus fuel stops so somewhere between 9 and 10 hrs away from Auckland.
Fuel breaks are usually 15mins (dependent on group size) and we fill up at:
Dairy Flat
Dargaville or Maungatapere (depending on direction)
Kiakohe
Dargaville or Maungatapere (depending on direction)
Wellsford
Dairy Flat
There will be other leg stretches as well at a number of turn offs while the group re-groups.
I'm usually over it by the time we get back to Wellsford and take a bit longer there to recover and let the arse stop hurting - but by that stage the group heads their seperate ways anyhow, some go SH1 others take SH16 home.

Well I did Twin Bridges on weekend and it is getting better, but the single lane from the bridge on the south side (Whangarei Side) is being widened after slips with the rain so is quite messy.
Also lot of tractors have been in the fields and tracked mud onto the road, has been washed down a lot however this is still some dodgey places you need to be careful on, more so on south side between bridge and Titoki.
From Dargaville, there was a number of sections that have been getting seal repairs on the way towards the tree upto Kaihu and also although hoping its been repaired as you go up in the hills after Kaihu before going into the forest there was a strip about 1k long they had ripped up ( but this is about a month old info as haven't been back that way in a while) which was for anybody other than mountain goat a real mongrel to go along as it sloped towards the ditch.

If anybody new"ish" is watching the thread I can tell you there is a fast through the corners group and a more sedate group forming.
Like i said in the original post - just find your spot in the group and enjoy the day - but rest assured if you are fast or slow (like me) there will definately be a place for you to not over extend yourself or be bored by the pace.

Time to be specific. How long is it exactly? 43cm is going to fit fine, 44cm is a bit tight, anything up to 50cm is possible on a diagonal, depending on it's circumference.

If I make it, it will be down to stealth & deceit, already had 2 days off this week & the Chancellor wants her pound of flesh (rightly so, too). Shall just keep my eye on the thread, the Hokianga is only an hour away & their is an unexplored gravel road I fancy which comes out south of the Waipoua forest for a sneaky rear catch up.
If tomorrows weather is the same as now it will be a pearler, blue skys, light breeze & toasty warm.

I'd just like to add that the highlight of the trip for me was when there were a group of four of us winding our way along the twin bridges road... dawn, qkkid and bigbrian... that was memorable, thanks guys.

Cheers for another great ride guys! Pushed my 250's engine till the limit... and it wasn't too bad. I love that shorty nimble kid - goes awesome through that Waipoua forest.
