View Full Version : Wellington Weekend Riding Group?

Hi All

So I am somewhat new to this (Well back after a long break really).

I have done some searching for riding groups in Wellington on the weekends (As daylight savings has now gone evenings are out) and there does not seam to be any thing that happens in wellington regularly.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or if someone is keen to work on getting a riding group going on a Saturday or Sunday morning let me know.

I have just picked up a great 07 Yamaha R6 and would like to get some road time on it.

Hey mate...

Firstly, ride! '08 R6 myself and I simply love everything about it! Quite a ride.

Secondly, the group rides on here in Welly were slow to get going last winter, but the winter before we had some brilliant days and groups together! The welly scene has been hugely taken over by the facebook group wellington riders. Plenty of folk from on here on that too (not me.... im banned bwahahahahahaha!). So thats a great place to check out as a clan of them organise rides most weeks. A heads up though, a shit load of politics amongst the core group and some riding to be very warely of. But as a rider we all choose to ride our own ride or not, and give those that need more of it space on the road.

I'm keen to start up some more rides like a couple of years ago on KB in Welly, as the other group all just got a bit much. But do head in and have a look, as they do get out for rides regually.

Choice - hope that helps.

How about people organising some using the events section? I'd be keen for a slower paced one, which some groups don't seem to want to do in winter?

or maybe its cos smart people don't learn to ride in winter... :woohoo:

Hi all.

Thanks for the great feedback. Really just keen to ride leave the politics on the foot path.

Ok so it sounds like there are some on here that could be keen to break off.

So as it is Tuesday maybe we look at putting some feed back up on Friday about what Saturday morning weather is looking like and some suggestions on a morning ride.

Keen for a medium pace to start with just working out how much you can through the R6 through a corner at the moment so slower is much better.

As for putting this in the Events section all happy to put it there but I am guessing now it is up then a moderator will need to move it. Or we start a spin off thread in there with just the GO GO GO details rather than the stuff that will build here.

Anyway off to the airport. Will check up later.

hey one and all - I am happy to organise the sat ride as its looking to be a magic day. I am in the Rapa, but this route would be a great ride: Welly lot meet Rimutex at 9.45 for 10am depart. Over the Rimutakas, i will met you in Featherston at Western Lake turnoff at 10.30.10.45ish. Around western Lake, the up to Martinborough for coffee. Then Gladstone road, up water Tower Road, over Lees paraka Road to Longbush Martinborough Road, back down that one, over ahiaruhe road and either back down to Martinborough, or over to Gaytown for lunch. Then home or wherever. I only got back on my bike again two days ago after being off for 3.5 months with broke leg, so am keen to make the most of what riding I can. Just put a comment here id any interest, don't need to create an event, we're riders after all, ot party planners<_<

actualy Hoarn there'd be quite a few who would be content with a slow paced ride... and I'm sure if a distance was decided on then pillions would be available for those with lower than 250cc machinery.

Did a repeat effort today on a somewhat smaller scale.
Met up with a couple of guys at Rimutex at 1pm, back over the hill, met up with Quasi in Featherston.
Around the lake again, to Martinborough, along the road to Gladstone but turned off early through Ponotahi and Parkvale to get to Carteron and the White Swan for some refreshments.
Today was a nicer day weather wise than yesterday (which wasn't a bad day in itself) and the roads are pretty well clear of traffic around the Wairarapa on a Sunday mid-afternoon. Most of the bikes have been and gone by then.
Another good day and just about 700 kilometres clocked up this weekend pootling around the Wairarapa.

Rinse and repeat next weekend weather permitting.

Sorry to head off only halfway through the ride yesterday folks. Something happened and my head was no longer in the right head space so I headed straight back home. Pleased you all enjoyed the rest of the ride. Today however I had a great ride where everything just felt GREAT! Even touched my pegs down 3 times on the Rimutakas - has the road almost to myself on my afterroon ride home. Buzzing. But also very aware that means I am leaning her over right onthe edge of the tyre.

Lovely to meet a few new faces, and see the old ones of course. Well done Carla - no holding you back girl... looking on form and smooth as always.

So the weather forecast for tomorrow:

Wellington:
Mainly Fine, Chance Showers with brief Southerly's.

Wairarapa:
Mainly Fine, Chance Showers with brief Southerly's.

So if it is OK in the morning I am still keen.
Same as last week with meeting point?
9.45am at Caltex - Rimutaka‎ with leave time for 10am
I am not sure of really a location from there as I am still new to where is good to ride. So really when we have everyone together we can work out where to go but as some of those saying they are keen for a ride are in the Wairarapa that would make sense.

You might just have to wait for the local Rapa weather girl to give her update.
Carla - where are you?

I've got my daughter this weekend (and I've managed to completely bugger my neck) so can't make it.

Haha - here i is! - very mild out there and overcast, no wind, no rain, lots blue. Its actually the perfect morning for a ride!

Hope yr neck gets better soon Kenny, old bones aye:rolleyes:

oye! I'll have less of that.
I'm not sure what I have done. Woke up on Friday morning and neck felt stiff and had a twinge on the left side. As the day progressed it just got worse.
I've been taking anti-inflams, using deep heat and a wheat pack but it's still the same today. Didn't get much sleep last night because of it.
(anyway - off topic - have a good and safe ride people)

Bernadette and myself had planned to go for lunch at the Lake Ferry Hotel but with a severe wind warning in place for this afternoon we will give that a miss.
Next weekend is the Martinborough fair (Bernadette is helping out at a stall and I'll be hanging around) so looks like our next ride will have to be the weekend after.

its glorious here, not a cloud in the sky and n ot a drop of wind. Anyone know when the storm is going to arrive?
Pierre, if Bernedette has to start early next sat, you are both welcome to stay at my place Friday night.

Not sure exactly when the strong winds are expected to arrive , but it's already reasonably breezy here in Wainui and we are in what is usually quite a sheltered spot.
Metservice says this afternoon and evening for Wellington and Southern Wairarapa. Wind is a funny thing though and it may be OK for most or all of the day.
Last year we camped at Ocean Beach over Labour weekend. Left early because the winds were that strong the tent was being flattened. Got to Featherston which is only a hop, skip and a jump up the road and it was virtually wind still. Go figure.

Yep getting pretty windy in Upper Hutt already. But not too bad just yet. Unsure on this one - we all know how incredibly dangerous the Rimuktakas are with the gusts up there. Last weekend say a rider in front of me, 2 up, get blown right off the road into gravel and up a grass verge. Thankfully he knew just how to handle it but that wind was very unforgiving.

I might head out for a short ride anyhow. Will be at the gas station by 10. Unsure of where to go, but keen for a shorter one for the day

Nice to see some names from the slowpaced tuesday rides arranging things for themselves now.
Spotted Carla on ANZAC Day...head of the pack and a huge grin! Lovely to see you again chik. I was behind BlackDog and his missus.

Far out....that Muldoons corner works site is worse than it was now. The wind caught me on the way home, just as well Henry and I are a considerable mass to shift. Wouldna been any fun at all for a light bike and an ordinary sized rider.

I'm still keen though when there is a clear day if a group forms :)

Hopefully have a new bike in about 6 weeks, depending on how fast those crazy Italians can get the bike made, silly Just in Time production strategy :brick:

Yeah - went home and stuck the chamber on it to racke up the grandsons.... woo hoo.... got a foul look from Vicki (not really) and did some more on the guzzi... I was just about to start taking it to bits for a mini resto but like vicki said its only half buggered... besides we are thinking of the cold kiwi so whats the point of having a mint bike to leave it laying about in a muddy paddock....

Once the Guzzlers going again we will join you all for a ride and spare you the embarasment of having a mini bike beat you all to the next stop ;-) (cough)

Yeah - its just anyone. Its all about riding and meeting mates - old and new. Are you on Facebook - sign up to Wellington Riders as most of the rides seem to be on there now. We had a great ride to Lake Ferry for lunch last Saturday, and Castlepoint on Sunday.
Or else pm me your mobile and i can text you about rides.
