+1 Drove off at speed the F'ing prick. WTF is going wrong that these ... are finding there way the wrong way onto the motorways? Then they don't notice that the median barrier is on the wrong side? If it wasn't so tragic it would be a Tui billboard.

Here's hoping they can save the bikers leg.

I had a WTF!?! moment recently turning off Hillsborough Road on the SH20 on ramp to find and old couple driving towards me in their mitsi.
Seems that wrong way on motorway is more common than it seems.

Appears the poor guy has lost his leg. Herald have updated the story.

He was taken to Middlemore Hospital with head and serious leg injuries but his leg was removed during surgery, said police communications shift Inspector Norman Upjohn.

Must have 3 lanes because Stuff reports he was hit in the centre lane and had to drag himself to the side of the road. Also appears the car drivers was drunk.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/6777700/Man-dragged-himself-to-safety

The motorcyclist had managed to drag himself from the centre lane where the accident occurred, to the side of the motorway where he was found when emergency services arrived,

That's a bit sick. Guess they will blame it on one of these automatic things but that's not good enough.

I heard about it early this morning and was horrified. Now I've just read the updated story and yep, the motorcyclist has lost a leg but what a gutsy effort hauling himself to "safety". CRIKEY!

So glad the cops caught the F**ker responsible.

I cannot wish enough bad karma on this person for fleeing the scene. FFS! He knew he had just hit someone and possibly killed them.

Hope he goes to jail and gets kneecapped by a couple of Hells Angels. (see? they are good for something)

(Actually I wish a LOT MORE than that on the arsehole...)

A waste of space on the planet.

Sending positive thoughts to the biker

Long-term loss of licence and a few thousand in fines IMO, what a shocker

I was test riding a GSXR1100, (was thinking of trading my GPz) and went pootling out the NW motorway one day, exited at Waterview and found myself heading straight up the arse of some fruitcake woman, with her kids in the back, reversing up the off ramp  ....presumably she'd got off at the wrong one. Needless to say she got an earful.

I can affirm that. Many years ago (when still young and single...) I was returning from visiting my bf who was working out at Kingseat at the time. To get back onto the motorway at Papakura to head north (heading back from Hingaia Rd towards town) I ended up heading onto the northbound exit lane by accident. Despite there being no other traffic on the road at that late hour of the night, my heart was in my mouth as I realised what I'd done.
Made me extremely cautious about checking for the appropriate lane and entry/exit ramps after that.

Buellbabe is dead right, damn gutsy effort from the guy to drag his broken body off the highway like that.

Thoughts go out to the Rider, his family and friends:love:

Ride safe KBers.

Is there some way of finding out what hospital ward the dude is in? Cos I would really like to pass on my best wishes to him...I don't mean go and visit him but just to let him know that people care...whether it be a card, flowers, Lotto ticket or whatever.

The Media report he is in Middlemore. You could try ringing their reception or try contacting the Herald.

From a purely selfish perspective, this is why I love and hate riding bikes in equal measure. I know that any single road user our there can change my life or end it at will, not matter how hard I work at risk management.

In terms of punishment: Don't expect anything too severe. You're allowed to inflict any sort of damage on any other person in NZ from behind the wheel or bars with somethin gclose to impunity.

This was aweful news to hear on the radio as I drove into work this morning.

Thoughts are with the rider for the best possible recovery and adaption to a whole new life he has to begin - thanks to anothers foolish actions. His whole world has just changed hugely and I wish him all the best. Wonderful news though to hear he survied!!!

The poor bugger had a below knee amp early this morning and is in Middlemore Hosp. I do know which ward he is on and his name but am sure I am not allowed to share this as I work there. For anyone with good intentions of support he would probably not be hard to find.

Having lived with injuries from a drunk on the wrong side of the road for 31 years I do know this chap is going to have a lot of grief and anger to work through for some time to come and would benefit from some biker support.

That's via the courts/law.

I think a group of bikers with a hack saw ('Saw' style) could give the correct punishment.

My thoughts are with the rider in question, poor bastard :(

Fucking hell. I suppose a small silver lining is that it was a below knee chop. There are incredible prosthetics these days, I see that some American soldiers who have lost legs below the knee have been allowed to return to active combat duty in the 'stan. Hopefully this chap can get some awesome gear that will help him return to riding soon.

i hope the rider is as comfortable as possible, i cant begin to imagine what affect it will have on his life.
I also wonder if the driver was in a hurry to get back to the casino to pick up the kids he /she had left in the carpark?
