23rd April 2012, 21:16
Its been a while since we spammed you guys on one of our events so freakin well get used to it over the next 6 months OK:bleh:
This Sunday is the firsrt of the winter trail rides thru Woodhill and the tracks are all blessed and ready to be ridden like a...
Anyway, Jolly Roosta with the Leightons farm loop and about 40km of main forest loop with home options and another 10km of secondary forest loop are awaiting. We've again been busy and this year its totally different from the last.
None of the "OK we will just reverse last years track" from our crew. We are setting the bar!!!
We even cater for quads.
Normal boring farm loop tho:msn-wink: with the pee wee track as well.
If you want to camp over on the Saturday night feel free (no riding and no charge for camping) as we will have the bomb fire going and feel free to help us sink a few ales. Compulsory!!

I'm in, I've even serviced the bike!
Was a great ride last year and a little bit of rain at the end of the week will settle the sand nicely, looking forward to it. :headbang:
While we are on the subject, the Sandpit is full of new tracks and great riding at the mo, the log "jumping" track being a novelty and guaranteed to provide a few good photo opportunities, keep up the good work Tony!

I'll second that, the logs at the start put heaps off so it's always quite though there.
The new convit also gets the thumbs up.

I seem to have some problems with that track, after the uphill your supposed to turn left I think, enthusiasm usually results in me going straight ahead and wandering semi lost on the old track... one of these days I will get it right!
I am enjoying the variety at the Sandpit, lots of new bits to challenge me.

 I did the exact same thing the first couple of times through there. the first time I went the wrong way at nearly every time it crossed the old track. It just goes to strengthen the "keep your head up" rule.
It is good to see new tracks opening up, keep up the good work all.
As for the JR i will hope to make it up.

Metservice and Metvuw are both saying fine on Sunday, after rain on Friday and showers Saturday.
Is the max loop distance 40km? I'm planning on bringing the spawn on KX85s and need them to be able to do a full loop on 1 tank.

Its 40km plus the farm loop. So all up its as advertised at 45km.
We have a short cut home at 15-20km as well as a seperate track that we haven't measured yet and this should be about 15-17km.
The farm loop will be 5-8km as well.
The coast block section in the big loop this year is long and way cool:niceone:

Well we book well ahead and check all sites. Powers, MNZ, Waitemata, Rodney (yes, we know you have a club event every 2nd Sunday) Epic Events (even though you have changed dates and seasons for DS and the 4hr numerous times in the last 2 years) and Silver bullet etc etc. (There was no mention of the maise paddock race a couple of weeks ago and the Warkworth Honda series got cancelled to this weekend a couple of weeks ago) before we advetise, mostly about 4-6mths out.
We really do try and work in with others and The Roosta is always held this time of the year. The only other event we normally clash with is John Cobbs (Ardmore) schools MX champs. That normally doesn't affect either of us too much apart from the fact that my son races this event and I don't get to be there, plus he is pissed because he in his words "I never get to ride the best trail ride ever".:jerry:
Its a pity that some plan poorly. Surely you would try and maximise your event rather than dilute it.
Sorry (not directed at you Scott411) but why would you put on a Maize race the same weekend as an MX champ event (Huntly?), Ardmore School MX races, Honda School MX races and a trail ride in Franklin to boot??
Anyway the point I'm saying is that the calendar needs to be consulted and its in the best interest for the promotor as well as for the rider that events are well scheduled and, as we do, the other stake holders are consulted..
Silver bullet without doubt would be the best.

please remember i have nothing to do with MR MC events anymore
but you have moved it back a week from last year, as we had this discussion last year,
http://www.endlessdirtbiking.co.nz/jolly-roosta-trail-ride.html-0
problem is that Craig has to miss Puke Clubdays (3rd sundays of the month as they use their medic crew) and duck shooting opening, (very big in rural communites)
so that leaves the last weekend in april, and Mr MC have run this date for about 4 years that they have run the maize paddocks, it has clashed with the schools a few times because of this, but you have a small window to use the maize paddocks,
as for the limestone ride, it is a bit later than normal, but wiht a change of shop running it, (after full throttle closed in dec) the same issues come out,

Oh story of my life,
With road, track, MTB and dirt, ducks, deer and other fluffy things. Then with work leaving me a Sunday something has to give.
You will find there is always two things on at the same time.
Don't have a go at the organizers just pick one and "ride like you stole It". They do their best and should be thanked.

Yes its a pain trying to schedule and we realise maize racing has a small window.
Try having to work in with the diffrent forestry events and operations as well:rolleyes:
Hunting takes up June to the end of Sept and they get priority during the prime riding season in our area as we are not allowed to have rides in the southern blocks as thats for club events like Waitemata MCC.
Any off topic and a subject that will we will long be banging heads about.

Um, isn't it great that we have a choice of so many (obviously popluar) events to go to?
These are even advertised and there will be another one along in a week or 2 if you can't make your prime choice this weekend.
Try finding out about the road-racing events, it's like it's a f*&king secret and spectators are treated like a bloody nuisance. When Kevin Schwantz (ask your dad) turned up 2-3 years ago to thrash a Norton around Pukekohe I saw that on an Aussie site I visited for something else and it just caught my eye. No NZ sites had mention of it at all ffs! You'd think, with all the recent moaning, that circuits would want to get the punters in at $20 for the day and grab a slice of the coffee & burger action, maybe even have their own stall for tees, caps, etc - but no, money comes from the entries and screw the spectators cos they walk around & get in the way.
I'm planning on taking Mr 9 & Mr 6 around the farm loop a few times and will even try not to get stuck in the car park this year (by parking nearer the gate). Note to the gate/parking marshals: a front-wheel drive car towing a trailer can't get up grassy/sandy hills very well.

Not the first time and wont be the last.
At the end of the day we can only do one ride on one day, so its up to the riders to decide which is the best one for them on that day.
Its 3 times a far for me to do Leytons farm, but its a much better rinde than limestone downs anyway ....
It "someone" hadnt broken there leg Im sure we would be there ....

Yeah, know what you mean, it's about a $200 plus day for me and 2 sons. But it's a whole day and way more fun than going to the movies which is about $50 and only a couple hours. It's a similar cost for the likes of Rainbows End. I know what I'd rather do. Dollar spent per hour of entertainment, it's still a pretty ratio.

1080 at 30 frames. 32 gig card gets about 8.5 hours. A bit hungry. My battery only lasts 2.5 hours. I've tried 720 at 60 frames with this camera but watching it on the big screen, it doesn't look as good as 1080.

Jolly Rooster was lots and lots of fun today. A bit too much tight forestry riding in the 40k loop for my liking (not that I have an issue with the riding, just the inevitable traffic and slow pace always boils my bike) but I made up for that by blatting around the farm loop 6 or 7 times.
Hope the people who needed medical attention are ok.

The spawn rode like squids! I had a couple of offs and are feeling it (my knee complains every time I go to get beer from fridge).
+1 for the sore peeps. I saw two who were not at all keen on moving.
The forestry bits were better than normal cos not too many roots were exposed (refer above offs!)
There was a good turnout, perhaps more farm tracks would be better as there were a lot of "novices" today.

A great day yesterday (470 riders) and thanks to all that punted around. A couple of ambo's and one of those is on the road to recovery with concussion.
Rach had an off but we haven't been able to speak to her yet although we have been trying to as not only do we like to ensure our riders are OK but is a requirement by law (DOL) that operators ascertain the condition of any injured riders within 24 hrs (I think, but Louise handles H&S).
Anyway she sounded healthy sucking on the laughing gas.
Yes, we would like more farm land but we can't afford the neighbouring 1200 acres<_<. and I suppose it is a predominantly forestry ride with the farm loop as a bonus.
The big thing for us is that we spent today grading and reinstating the farm loop and its come up really well with minimum damage and hardly any litter especially in the car park paddock. Thanks Guys. This ensures that the landowner is happy and we get invited back again next year:woohoo:
So the next event is the first round of the 2 Man, June 3rd, up in the top blocks where we had Day one of the 2 day ride last year followed by a trail ride in the mid blocks, past The Sandpit, end of July.

Mine was doing the same but only when we got stuck in traffic at the start, after that it was fine.
I have a fan kit ready to go in when the radiator gets fixed so that should sort that out.

I'd recommend a fan kit on any big bore 4 stroke for forest riding. I have one fitted to the Berg 390 and thats an Enduro bike. Since fitting it has not boiled once and thats doing stop starts sometimes every 20mtrs to arrow. Peace of mind.
Yes, farm loop is definitely in the last round. We have a few more fresh tracks not used for the forest section. Round one could be a bit more open than the previous years.

I might look at that this year (it clashed last year) but I'm not a fan of mass starts. I looks good unless you were that poor guy last year that lost it on that first little jump and had three bikes crash into him.
Is gas that hard? everyone puts a can on the trailer, trailer goes to set point, everyone fill up there.

in a trail ride its a bit of a problem, but since no one is in a hurry not really, if it is a race and people are trying to go fast it will be a massive problem,
I know what you mean about a mass start, i have had both sides of it, to holeshotting it a while back, to taking 10 kicks to start a bike to going down in the first corner, but i still love mass starts,

Sorry for the silence....I was in the hospital and the numbers I listed were my cell which was not on in hospital and the home one - which would have been fine when Jarrod was home but I had accidentally moved the base phone so it wasn't working
LOVED the farm loop. I was getting some great tips for getting up speed and smoother riding from a mates dad....but maybe I got too much speed up and grabbing my throttle didn't help...but avoided those trees before I went for a superman flight - pity about the landing! :shit:
Just a freak accident on my last lap of the day. Last lap is lethal!
No breaks but off work for a min of a week as smashed my hip bone into the socket and bruised then both and did something to the leg muscles and hip flexors. All good as will be back - maybe not as fast for a start. :innocent:

It's a day that attracts a lot of different people, with different abilities and different machinery, it's not a race, where there are separate classes for bikes and skill level. With common sense and courtesy, we can all ride within our own ability and at the speed we're comfortable. This means the fast guys keep an eye out for the novices and kids and pass when there's plenty of room and it's safe to do so. Conversely, the novices should understand that there will be faster guys coming up behind and move over and let them through when they can. There will always be the dickheads in both camps that don't care about other people, but that unfortunately is unavoidable.
Just be courteous, if some douchebag is reving up behind another rider maybe it's because some douchebag in front of them is purposely blocking them instead of just pulling over and letting them past.

Your right jay and raise good points and for arguements sake 2t haha
The actual fast riders who ride more than 3 times a year will find a way around slower riders without making a big deal out of it, either by waiting for the slower rider to move over, or by just riding around them.
The ones that make a big deal, rev their bikes and get angry, are the same kind of people who act like dick heads in the pits. Once a dickhead, always a dickhead.

Indeed, like the guy on the 350 sxf that got past me in the forest, he was past me and gone before I could blink. No issue to me, he had the skill to take a line I would never take, so passed me with ease. I never knew my bike could be that fast...

I find a good loud woohoo or a yeehaa lets people know you are there and having fun too. Why get agro and shout/rev its all about fun eh.
People are more likely to move out of the way for a woohoo than a oi get out of the fu#king way call or a bike on the limiter. Just my 2c..

I will use the Rev to let people know i am there, not a massive valve bouncing one, but a quick rev, esp when i was riding 125's,
but i always gave a thank you, or a wave when someone gave me space, to get past as well,
you give kids and people you can see are not confident alot more room as well,

I catch people, and people pass me and in both instances I will wait until i find a nice area to overtake/pull over.
I'm there to have fun and I guess most are to. To get aggro is just not in my nature while riding, even racing.
like you said some are dicks some arn't, just a fact of life.

I do the same, it's a quick clutch in and rev, just a polite "hey, not sure if you've heard me". Then carefully pass while trying not to roost the slower rider, with a nod and a 'thanks' shout.
But at the same time I'll admit I've done some dumb passes, but never intentional. I always feel bad and I know who I've just cut off thinks I'm a complete wankstain but even with the best of intentions, we all get it wrong sometimes.

I was out on a ride about a year ago and I came up and over took a guy that I'd been sitting behind for a while. I wasn't being a dick or anything and it must have been the dad of the guy I passed chased me down and tried to barge me off my bike. I was so stunned when he smashed into me and nutted out that I stalled my bike and he launched into me about thats not how you pass.
You just can't win sometimes.

Ive lost count how many times I have been passed in what can only be described as a stupid place, by people who think the trail ride I am on is the world series cross country final and I_must_be_passed_no_matter_what ........
Which is quite odd, as I can tell the difference between a world championship final and a trail ride ....
If Im aware of someone behind me I will always move over to one side and or stop and let them past at a safe place for both of us.
Im always very curtious to people I pass, (which isnt very often) especially kids.

There is a short write up in this months KR mag. Not quite my 15 minutes of fame, but there is a pic of a fat old chap at the bottom of page 103 on my old KDX.
