Many of these are bikes you are likely to be able to test ride at a dealer. I for one love the street triple as it's fast but also has a good ride position for around town, and it's not so obsenely fast that I break the sound barrier on the way to the shops. Might be a little outside of your price range though?
There is only a minor performance difference between all the big brands, and when you get right down to it very little of that matters to most riders. Pick whichever one is the most comfortable or looks the nicest. You'll find some are more track or street oriented though (in terms of power delivery, ride position) so consider what kind of riding you'll be doing too.

Ill definatly test ride what I can only problem is location anything in chch Id go and ride but other than mcr in Dunedin sports bikes are a little thin on the ground, to test that is, in these parts lol.
So I was thinking trade me which makes it a little more tough....
On the triple, love the look even thought about a monster but not suit I want to go naked.

The SV650 is a good bike for around town and spirited rides, could imagine that it would be a nice step up for you.

go into the shops and talk to them.
The bike shops are often aware of joe bloggs, who is thinking about selling his xyz600, and can pass details along.
Most bike shops can also probably source something for you if you are a genuine buyer and know what you want.
get some ass on seat time, and see what you like

SV650 is gutless compared to a 600cc race replica, but they're not a bad bike. You should first decide what kind of bike you want. Do you want a more upright style of bike that's good for commuting, while still being able to have a lot of fun on a twisty road? Or do you want a crotch rocket with decent power and handling at the expense of comfort and mid range torque?
Go sit on a few bikes and ride them if possible so you know what style of bike you want.

I'm pretty much in the same boat, waiting to see if I get paid out or the bike gets fixed from my recent off.
Im gonna be looking at a forward leaning uncomfortable crotch rocket.
Can't wait for the test rides! Never done one before what do you gotta do?

have it idiling on the kerb, gently let out the clutch.
Stall it because you wern't giving it any throttle and didn't want to power wheelie and drop it.
start it and open the throttle a fraction
stall it again because it still wasn't quite enough.
rinse and repeat twice more with incrementally more throttle.
Get fed up, say F&$^ it and wind the throttle like its your pa's groddy old 250.....

if you owned the CBR250 you already know about sprot bike comfort, vs performance/handling etc...
600cc sprot bikes will be the same, but more LOTS more... but still the same low bottom end power and sudden light switch OMG when it 'cam's in'.....
SV650... are good bikes, but it isnt going to be massively quicker than the CBR on top end etc. it will have better bottom end 'punch' compared to a full on sprot 600.
If you want a midway machine to do both? and FZ6R s/hand or similar...... would be my pick.

My 600 doesn't have a sudden cam climb in the power delivery and it's not far off modern 600s in terms of power :niceone: Lucky me!
For 8k you could do so much better than a late model 600, but, then again, they're awesome.
A mate of mine recently sold his '08 ZX6R for around $8k in Christchurch, nice bike.

Me little 4hundy is like that, its like a 250 up to 8k then it climbs up onto cam. I like it, schizophrenic.
Then again Im talking to a man about a gpx600 donk, I feel a motor rebuild thread coming on....

2005 GSXR 600 gets my vote.
That particular vintage was reknown for reliability, a strong engine and good handling. Rock solid bikes. I sold mine last year, wish I had hung onto it now...never gonna sell a bike again, just increase the collection.

Just picked up a 07 R6S for $6500 that goes like a rocket but not the most comfortable beast when you are on it for more than 1hr it starts to crush your man bits as the seat is quite firm and the handle bar position is very steep but all in all I love it and would not change a thing.:eek:
Best option as everyone else has said get down to a bike shop and take everything they have for a ride each bike has its on feelings and comforts / discomforts so until you have ridden some you will not know.

120,000 km? laughable!
A guy on the R1 forum in the USA bought a 2000 F4i brand spanking new.
he is currently up to just over 240,000 MILES.
still original clutch.
no engine work, just oil and filter regularly (uses basic 10/40 car oil too)
plus brake pads, and a couple of plug changes. thats it.

Jeeeeeebus! That's ridiculous. :first:
The only reason I wouldn't buy an F4i is; the VFR800.
Both can be had for similar coin and the Viffer is one of my favourite all round bikes.

FIL has a 98 with 15k miles on the clock. bought it over with him from the USA, and hasnt used it.
mint condition with a handfull of extras, seat cowl etc . . . tempted?
Ive ridden it, its a nice and relaxed bike to ride, but id prefer the 600 myself

i recently (10 days ago) stepped up to a bigger bike, I bought a Honda Hornet 900 (22,000km) for a little under $6K
Went for a 200km ride today, awesome bike, comfortable and a bucket load more power than my old CX400.

with modern day engines that distance SHOULD'NT be an occasional. The biggest killers of any motor is cold starting, high revs when not fully warmed up and traffic/gear changes...... Once the bikes warmed up and on the open road, which the USA has ridiculously long roads.... Huge milages should'nt be an issue... When I used to 'blat' on a regular 4 day weekend in Europe (an easy 600-1000miles in a go) the bikes had little wear and were running better than at the start. Warmed up, top gear, so very few gear changes, and right in the 'cruise zone' for power.

You're not wrong there.
But, many bikes here are used less regularly I suppose, not many 600s make it to 100,000km here  mind you...they do get crashed by wheely stupid idiots...
