I have just bought myself a cheap bass guitar and amp.. and am learning how to play it.
Bought some drums a couple of years ago and had some prof lessons. Play them every nown and then also.

Anyway. I've always liked the bass so decided to buy a ukulele and get used to playing a stringed instrument.
Discovered they are a heap of fun also (plus watching Hitcher play the uke rather awesomely helped) so have had a couple of those for a while.

Now with the bass entering into the family, discovering it is a lot of fun too.

Anyone on here a good bass guitarist or have an interest in them?

You had me until you said 'good'.

My favourite Basserator: Hook, P.

I'm teaching myself Money and Comfortably Numb at the moment. Truly awesome Pink Floyd songs and great bass tunes.

My favourite bass players: Lemmy from Motorhead. Yes I am serious. 90% of their sound is his bass rig. Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads (opposite end of the spectrum from Lemmy: clean lovely bass tone, very sparse).

S'funny I have been considering getting a bass: Not sure if I would go for the big-ass Rickenbacker with "Monster One" first up: I've seen acoustic four string basses which might be an acceptable compromise domestically.

Ex Suicidal Tendencies, Robert Trujillo. Now with Metallica. Love his style.

I always loved early Police and Stings use of the instrument. But Joy Division and early New Order is great too. And early Cure.

I'm not too bad, although guitar is my first love. I play pretty good drums too, so if you're up for a jam let me know.

Big Dave, you're not wrong about Peter Hook. From those first few notes of "Disorder" as an impressionable fourteen year old he's had me.

What happened with his recent tour? I was all excited about it then he just dropped us and Aussie like a hot spud.

I like Nikki Sixx :) Not a technical player per sae, but he is definately got the Rock n' Roll attitude Plus he plays Gibson Thunderbird Basses. The best looking and meanest sounding rock basses ever.....

Anyone who can die twice and come back has got to have the badass Rn'R attitude :headbang:

Obviously this man has never played a Richenbakher 4001 through an Ampeg SVT420

Rickenbakhers are nice sounding, but I don't like the look of them. Ampeg amps and cabs are pretty much industry standard work horses as far as rock and metal goes.

Dunno - he never called me either.

'Herbie Flowers' according to Wikipedia - but my recollection of the liner notes says Klaus Voorman played Bass.

I've played bass for 20 something years.. been in a band.. made an album, blah blah..

http://www.facebook.com/v/47661233612 (I'm not that fat any more.. but still ride bikes :P)

bass is awesome... especially if you are a team player (I love anything that involves team work). You are the interface between drum and melody, its awesome.

Favorite bass players.. hmm Jaco Pastorius, James Johnson, John Entwhistle, John Paul Jones, Will Lee (you can see him playing in the Letterman show band.. he is like.. freakishly good), flea (who is really a genius), and the master of them all.. Geddy Lee (Rush). Who else can sing, play bass, guitar, keyboards and switch sequences at the virtually same time, whilst playing the most amazing riffs?

Add to that Geezer Butler (Sabbath, Ozzy, etc), Jack Bruce, Phil Lynott.. oh the list goes on..

+1 for that, what's not to like about power chords on a bass?

I'd add Kim Deal (Pixies) and Krist Novoselic (Nirvana) and Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden)

Plenty of good bassists mentioned so far but I didn't see Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) included(?), total legend.

And of course, no bass thread is complete without the exquisite skills of a certain Mark King (Level 42):

I'm no James Deuce but I'd like to think I can hold my own in an average rock band. <_<

We could have some fun here...

Nice, I had a Hartke 200x200 AMP, a 15" and a 4x10 cab. Bummed i sold them it had an awesome sound.. I could get a nice taktak sound or a really low smooth jazz sort of sound and anything inbetween.

I had:

http://images.miretail.com/products/optionLarge/Steinberger/DV016_Jpg_Large_481947.001_black_angle.jpg

But it got stolen, so now I have:

http://www.ninestonering.com/craig/hburstxz2/hburstxz2-angle1.jpg

I far preferred the first one. It had a graphite neck and a wooden body (which was unusual as they are nearly always fully graphite or fully wood).
The new one plays nice and was only a grand imported (as opposed to 6k for the other at the time).

My brother is building a house at present (stupid earthquakes) and he sent me the plans and there is this room off to the side with no windows and I am like "whats that for? man cave? dead hooker storage?" but it is for his son to set up his drumkit in. in the house where they are, apparntly they can all hear when Jack is practising. And his sisters are not fans. ....

I have a nice left handed base in the cupboard somewhere - I was enjoying learning to play it when I decided to pull in the clutch when going down on my flattracker, the nerves of my plucking fingers were a bit stuffed. I could've switched to a pick, but really like using my two fingers. After 20 years the ends of my fingers are still a bit dead, although I've been thinking about getting it out again with the bike being on hold over winter....as too many tooth extractions means playing the saxophone is now not possible. Being a musician means keeping your body in good physical condition.... but I can still ride a bike in a pretty fuck up state.

i almost amputated the pad on a finger on my left hand a year or so a go.. it feels so weird i dont feel comfortable playing any more.. probably should though, to get used to it properly. It doesnt stop me... just feels weird.

BTW, black night is to bass players what smoke on the water is to guitar players..
