Wow, thats cool. The Jatz's need one of those for their garage.
99 Euro = ~ $160NZ, plus shipping and in theory minus local sales tax.

I was initially pretty impressed when he started but I take it he's an expert & was having a bit of trouble towards the end. I could see myself totally fricking it up.
Sorry to be negative but I would like to see a vid of a normal person use it & see if they get it right & how long it would take.
Pete I envy your engineering mind. Nordie I'll go halfsies with ya for a Peteblen special - only if the prototype (that would have to do 17, 18 & 21)works that easily:clap:

Cool idea, but I'd have to see someone do a 17" DR rim before I'd commit. You don't just lean on one of those suckers to pop the tyre into the rim well.
Looks like an MX 18 or 19" which are as soft as butter anyway.

Yer maybe right... but
stop the vid..have a look..
Theres a 20 or 25:1 ratio there... for every Kg he applys there 20 or 25kgs
of thrust on the tyre... a tyre levers only giveing a 4 or 5:1 ratio..
you apply 4kgs of preasure thats 80 / 100kgs of thrust..

Not worried about taking them off. Putting them on with minimal effort and least chances of damaging the tube and bead is great. It can take me 45mins to get a tyre on
I'd be looking at it being a shed tool normally.

Or a 6 ply Teleborg on any rim..
what a bastard of a job that was
my first & LAST 6 ply tyre...
Edit...
I had a play around
with the Rack & pinion.
30mm Dia pinion / 16X16 rack..
The rack could be longer.. but I
used what I had...
The pinion is able to advance the rack 60mm..
So I will get some steel this week & nibble away
at a few...

Yeh, 1975, DT360, 1st tyre change- 3 pinches !
Later that decade I read somewhere that you should part-inflate your tube a bit (mouth pressure will suffice)
This means inserting the valve after part-inflation.
This makes the tyre lever slide across your tube if there is any contact.
You don't get that squidgy 'uh-oh' sensation thru the lever as you pinch your tube :)

I'd like one of those in my basement Pete if you're making some up.

sorry for the slow entry into the thread...(8th day in hospital with my stupid broke-dick leg...bah! - and no, I'm not selling the bike)
I can really see that tool being a fantastic addition to the workshop for aiding the tyre changes. I've got levers, tyre buddys, rim savers, rubber mallet...but I think that tools works well and is clever
So, whats the plan? - buying, fabricated, testing?

I haven't pinched one for years either. I use a very weak soap/water solution. A handy tip is to take small bites with the tyre lever and never go far past vertical. If you drag the lever over too far, you're going to have pinch issues. Oh, and beat the shit out of the opposite side with a rubber hammer to force the tyre down into the well of the rim.
Changing tyres isn't that much of a chore once you have the technique right. In saying that, if I was changing tyres every week, I'd want one of those contraptions.

I have more trouble breaking the bead to get the tyre off, esp. 17" knobbies - getting the tyre back on with a big rubber hammer usually works ok.

So Pete...are we commissioning you to build the tool, or are you going to prototype it...
I've just watched the video again, and I love its action. For me, I hate scratching my black rims, as this method means I will have more control to simply push it over and prevent the gouging. So I want one...
If you make them, what will your price be?
PS did you see the engineering work of my hospital repaired leg ( I get out tomorrow)... titanium plates, screws, steel pins, steel wire, carbon rods...since you like the mechanical side of things...you'd appreciate how its all hung together.

Have to change the claw shape it jumps off the
bead when the pressure applyed at the final section..
It will do from 17" to 21" wheels (18" wheel in the pic) & fit bearings/axle size
15mm/16mm/17mm..19mm with a sleeve..
As yer can see theres alot of work in them..

There's alot of time in makeing one... not a lot of cost in martrials.
I'm trying to speed it up.. I have put a bit on some gear cutters
on E-bay.. Should speed the cutting of the gear/rack up..
But it will be well under half of getting one from overseas..There's are
99euros = $163nz plus shiping..so getting up to around $200nz...
To make one from start to finish prob 7 hours or more...
Be a couple of weeks yet..When the cutters arrive I still have
to machine up arbors to hold them...
So when I do start I will machine enough bits for 10/12...

Always done my dirt tyres but left the road tyres to a shop as not wanting to risk damaging the rim but at $25 a pop i'm gonna do them myself now and this tool looks the biz.

for the sake of curiosity, will this be usable on road bike tyres, or is it really only for off road tyres? A group of friends and I get together every couple weeks and do maintenance and a bbq, and it could be the kinda tool i could donate to our tool library if it was ok for road tyres.
I wonder if making the tip out of an appropriately shaped chunk of plastic would be a good mod for road wheels, less chance of scratching the paint?

if I purchased one, I would melt some rubber or plastic around the tip to save the rims myself, no biggy, would only take five minutes.

My tyre changing stand has a 15mm centre shaft...
The shaft is held with a roll pin / tention pin / roll dowl "any other names for them"
Shaft is 15mm in the head then steped up to 16mm then down to 14.8mm so it
fits in 15mm bearings easy...
a longer shaft then it would fit though the wheel & into the 15mm hole in the tyre stand..

Was just thinking of dropping the head onto the 14-odd mm shaft that's already on the changer...
Although........
Welding a 15mm ID tube to the changer instead of the shaft, would mean the shaft of the PB Bead Setter would drop down into it and hold the wheel nicely...

They are all in the hands of NZ post now...
One thing I have noticed with them they can work
better on one side of the wheel than the other..
It depends on the hub to rim offset..
changes rack to gear angle...
Don't get to gready... About 30/40mm
bites at a time...
They don't need to be on the bead when the
rack/gear in-gauge... they have 45mm of travel...

DR650? If so the rear tyre is notoriously hard to break the bead on. Had one and also had a KTM 950 which people think is hard - DR650 is hardest by far. Support the rim on a block of wood (need counter weight as well i.e. mate etc) and then tools like jockey wheel, lever with block of wood on tyre etc. Been more than one bad word said while fighting the damn things.
The problem is that there is a rib of alloy between the dish of the rim and where the bead sits. KTM 950 rear's have this also and their owners sometimes grind off the rib over about 10cm (both sides of the dish). Will upset the balance of the wheel but may well be worth it even if you have to put on additional wheel weights. Maybe try grinding of rib on opposite sides of the dish on opposite sides of the wheel? Just make sure you know which part of the wheel you ground the rib off.
Cheers R

I've changed more than my share of tyres over the years. I must say the DR650 rear is the hardest I've done yet.
The bead is a real issue (depending on the type of tyre). Leaning the tyre on a sturdy block of wood and jumping up and down on the rim works for me. Not pretty though. I've been meaning to make a bead breaker.
The actual tyre change isn't that difficult, you've just got to get agressive with it. Go hard out with the rubber hammer and beat the tyre right down into the rim well on the opposite side to where you're working....or get one of Pete's gizmos. I would buy one, but I'm too tight, and need the exercise. ;)

Speaking of cool tools, there's been the odd post out there about stands to get a wheel off the ground to lube the chain or fix a flat, some use sticks, some use cut down expandable tent poles, here's one made for purpose ready to use...

Thanks to timg for showing me it.

Bit like that, the bits are tubes and one slides inside the other etc etc, yea the one tim has looks quite light duty so I'd take care using it. Comes with a strap to lock on the front brake to help stop it rolling off the stand.
Should suit the WR nicely, my Transalp has a centre stand.
Tyre tool arrived today thanks.
Edit: better pictures of the stand on their instructions page. (http://www.endurostar.com/ts2_instr.htm)

If you have a real adventure bike you just throw it on the ground to fix a flat. :done:
I usually take a hot woman along to assist with lubrication.

Now that's something to mock up the next time someone gets a flat :D
Someone lying on the ground under the bike while a tyre gets changed...
I volunteer Padmei for the lying on the ground bit...
I can't, I've got to film it of course...

Why is it always me that has to hold the bike up with my head? Can't someone else have a go for once? You guys always seem to take a long time & laugh when I get cramp:angry:

Ooh, I say...
I just acquired one of the T7 changing stands (think that's the same as yours). What was the upshot with regard to the PB MkII Tubesaver integration retrofit project?

The maker has done a runner, well more of a stumbler, you don't expect to be too sprightly in your 90's, without dropping one off.
Had cash waiting too. Even scribbled out the word "monopoly", do you have any idea how long that takes on $2 notes?
If the post extends 100mm past the bottom bearing, then the shaft should be good.
Then you need a 70mm or so tube attached instead of the post on the changing stand so the PB MKII fits down through the wheel and into it.
Having 2 posts for the PB MKII would be sweet. One for travel, one for home.
The post needs to be 14mm max dia for the TT350 front. The T7 changer is 16mm dia until you grind the threads off

used mine for the 1st time today, put a new rear on the Off-spring's bike,
found it quite hard to get the top side started, but I guess that comes with practice

FINALLY got around to using the PB Mk II today, just as a garage-based practise run on the rear since I had never yet changed it myself!
It really is a bloody handy tool, so cheers Pete :2thumbsup
I managed to mark the rim slightly a couple of times getting the last couple of bites on, but I think that was me using it too close to the rim.
Incidentally, I wonder if the Freewind rear rim may be a bit different to that on the DR, as removal and refitting of the tyre went pretty OK (Fullbore M41) and I couldn't see the flange (or somesuch) inside the rim that I have read about on here being inside the DR650's.

I've used mine on the 1150Gs, 650 Dakar & XLR250 tubed & tubeless works a treat on all :2thumbsup

So, I've been practising my tyre changes with varying degrees of exertion and success. Mostly I've been doing it with the tools I carry but yesterday afternoon I tried putting a 17" E-09 onto the back of the Freewind (which I think has the same rim as the DR). Holy cow, I'd still be there doing it now if it weren't for Pete's super tool.
So Pete - Thanks :)
I'm sure my technique could be improved, but meanwhile I am keeping my fingers crossed I don't have to fix that thing on a ride.
