Firstly just so I can get the rest of this out without it.
F*** YOUR F***ING ASS YOU F***NG F***!
Heading home tonight I was waiting to turn right at the Sockburn roundabout. A FASTWAYS COURIER VAN coming to the entrance to the roundabout to my right (i.e. would have right of way if coming straight through) had its left indicator on and there was no traffic in the right lane. :niceone:
Sweet I thought, I saw the gap and went to take it. Turns out, the Van's left indicator was on because he wanted to go straight through the roundabout. :shit:
Hence my term SMMIAJFDAIGKHTUTBILTFGLOMD. Sorry Mate My Indicators Are Just For Decoration And I Don't Know How To Use Them But I Like The Flashing Green Light On My Dash.
I managed to avoid the accident but I have never had such a close call. I know that I'm the dick for assuming someone's indicators are an indication of what they may be doing. And if it had gone wrong, it wouldn't have made a difference whether I acted correctly or not, I'd still be an ex-biker. I'll chalk it up to experience and make sure I don't make the same mistake. :calm:

How many time have you seen peeps (including bikers) just driving along with their indicators going, or not even using them?
Add this to your list of "keep alive rulz". NEVER pull out in front of any vehicle from a give way or stop sign, even if it has its indicator on.

Dont worry, Nappisan will get those satins out :)

Might get the stains out of my satins even :)
But yeah, I take full responsibility for pulling out when I did, fact is that I shouldn't have made the assumption I did. And as I said, being right wouldn't have made a difference if it had ended badly

So many people do this, such a basic thing. Assume everyone else on the road is a total fuckwit and ride accordingly and you will be fine.:msn-wink:

There are a number of roundabouts around where you have to pull out in front of a vehicle that's signalling it's intention to turn, otherwise you'd be stuck for ever. The royal oak roundabout in auckland is a good example.

The Sockburn roundabout is a bastard anyway with too many people just not indicating at all.
But courier vans are a class of menace all on their own...the drivers are usually looking at their paperwork to work out where they're supposed to be going and very seldom at the road...

Had the same but sort of opposite this morning.
There's a 3-entry (N, W, S) roundabout in Tawa where the main "straight" is actually a bit more than 180 degrees heading North from the South entrance (so technically, people should all indicate right as they enter, then indicate left as they exit) so you get used to cars looking like they are turning a bit, when they're not.
So this van coming through looks like it's going "straight" and I pull out to go (me entering from North exit and wanting to go out the West entrance) - and it turns out he's coming around but hadn't bothered indicating at all. I slam on the brakes and he gives this "sorry" wave to me.
He then went past the entrance he'd come in on, basically doing a 450 degree turn. He didn't bother - left - indicating his exit, so clearly was just a lazy sod.
(It's a bugger of a roundabout. So few people indicate left as they exit, that you have to just watch where they are going, before deciding to pull out or wait. But due to the curve, it takes a while to really see.)

Good on you OP for admitting it was a bit silly. You were lucky! Personally I prefer the lesson that doesn't hurt too...
Intersections that suck. The one by my house. You can't see because people park right up to the edge of it, and its a two lane road and naff if I'm getting hit by a bus!

It's incredibly hard to respond to a post like that without coming off as a jackass or to ignore the post without showing that I've at least given your thoughts some consideration.
In this instance, I am reminded that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. If I am correct, I believe we've almost met before on a one way bridge in Rakaia. If so, I hope you have also taken some of your own advice.
However, I sincerely hope that neither of us has the need to pick the other off any road. In the event that I'm wrong, sweet as, ride on.

One lesson I have learned is I never move unless I actually see the indicator come on.I have to admit that once or twice people have changed their mind after indicating and carried on straight through or are indicating before a side road even though they intend to pull in AFTER the side road......aa common one here in Auckland.

It's a bit sad when you ride everyday, but, can still count on two hands how many people you have ever seen indicate correctly in these situations.

I had an interesting experience the other day, a cage was indicating right from the left hand lane on a 2 lane rd, I was next to him in the right lane so slowed down to give him a gap to move into (assuming he wouldn't see me and being the considerate person that I am) he then proceeded to turn left, still indicating right, into a side street and nearly taking out a pedestrian who assumed, since he was indicating right that he would not turn left. Lucky ped was able to dash back before he was run over fortunately.
I have recently seen a few instances where a car indicates right and turns left, I'm assuming they have their indicators wired wrong because surely nobody with a license would be that stupid?
I always wait until the other vehicle has slowed down or shown some sort of definite intention to do as they are indicating before I will pull out in front of them, may take a bit longer to get where I want to go, but not as long as a detour to hospital.
Well done for avoiding a crash, but I really don't think you can blame yourself too much for this.

Had the same thing happen in my cage. Was humming along on the open road, indicate and turn right into a side road while taking right of way against another car coming towards me and turning (and indicating!) the same direction (his left), and the instant after I take the corner I look in the rear vision mirror to see said car flash past behind me at well in excess of the speed limit. What could have been if I was a second slower? Of course this give-way rule has changed now, and frankly I'm enjoying the difference.
So yeah, soz about your fright.

its a very common thing for people who drive euro cars after driving Jap cars (or things like ford focuses (is it ford focii? really?) because the indicator stick is on the LEFT side of the wheel not the right. So numpties get in them and then turn the indicators the wrong way. with the stick on the right you push up to indicate left, push down to indicate right. So they do the same thing with the stick on the left. but "up" is right and down is left.
Or they turn the windscreen wipers on instead of the indicators. Thats always entertaining.

My car is Japanese and my mums is Euro. I do have the problem of doing the wiper thing occasionally (not much lately since I drive her car more than mine and cos my bike is my main transport). But I have never done the wrong indicator, it seems obvious, you push the way you are turning. I.E. you move the indicator stalk the way you would move the steering wheel when you are going to turn. If people can't figure that out should they be driving?

If people can't figure that out should they be driving? Agree. But IMO at least half the people driving shouldnt be. Its a long list: anyone over 70. Anyone under 30. Anyone from a list of countries I specify. Anyone with children in the car. Anyone with a pet in the car. Anyone with a stereo in their car. Anyone with more than one person in their car. Anyone with an IQ less than 95.
Do it right, and there'll be just you and me left, bud. and you're far enough away that I shouldnt have to worry about you too much. I'll still be vigilant though.

Whenever I've driven my mums ford I always stuff that up, stupid indicators on the wrong side, I soon get it right though but it's always that first corner turning the wipers on going around the corner lol
