View Full Version : Kidney belts?

After being in the flooring trade for over 30 years now, it doesn't take long until my lower back gets a tad uncomfortable when riding.
I find myself twisting my torso (when I get the chance) just to relieve the strain somewhat...
Have had a bit of a look around and found this > http://www.fc-moto.de/WebRoot/FCMotoDB/Shops/10207048/4ECE/680D/0D9C/B9B3/A092/3E70/5055/A963/Zandona-Nieren-Gurt-Cross-Schwarz.jpg ..and at US$57, it could be a good investment to offer lumbar support.

Dont really want to go all back protector, so could this be the answer?
Anyone else use such a belt?

Kidney belts are designed to put pressure on your kidneys and other bits so they don't jangle around when riding off road, and they definitely save some pain when used in that capacity! What you're talking about sound more like muscle stress, I guess a bit of pressure on those muscles could cause them to work a bit differently or something, but I've never heard of them being used for that.
I can't see them being very comfortable on long rides either, especially not if it is a FBMC ride!

I'd be looking more into the bike's ergonomics, bit of adjustment on the pegs/bars/seat might fix it, without requiring a <s>corset</s> kidney belt and associated moob enhancement

I uise one for longer rides. I.E. More than 8 hours riding in a day. They were origionally used by MX riders, and that's when I started using one. But long days on road bikes does the same sort of damage as short MX rides, and I ceratinly notice a difference.

Its nothing to do with the bike...its a work related niggle (as mentioned in the first sentence) Even an hour driving the work van, sitting on the office chair at home can prove uncomfortable...phyiscal work John..catches up on the body.
Just looking to ease it when on the bike.
I could look at the peg settings though as well.

If it helps in keeping the lower back postured then great.

I occasionally use a belt similar to the ones linked below, they are great at supporting while lifting and keeping the muscles warm esp when there's a slight breeze about. But i do suggest limited use ie not everyday for the rest of your working life as the muscles tend to rely on the brace more and more making problems worse in the long run if its worn all the time.

I got the tall man bad back issue. I wear full back protector with thick kidney belt if im going long distance and have zero back pain. A few years ago I toured a blackbird for 2 weeks without it and could barely walk after day 3. Tour Feb this year same 2 week and same distance zero pain.

Ah yup, I thought it was because you had to support your upper body weight with lower back muscles when riding, which seems to be a common problem.

It might pay to enquire at the local shop if they would let you test one? Or just post up your waist size and see if any generous kb'r will lend you one.

I've got a surgical belt I don't use, it's still new if you want to pop in and try it on.

Cheers mossy, clear indication that something like this has its place, maybe not for everyone but I am willing to give it a go.

I wear a kidney belt since i am riding bikes. 30 years or so. It was and is a basic part of riders gear in germany. We wear it to keep the kidneys warm, but if you wear it tight, it can support the back as well. I feel pretty well after all the years. No weakness at all.

I don't see how it could possible hurt to try and see how it works for you Maha, may just get a tad warm in the summer months but small price to pay for experimental purposes.

I stopped in at a bike shop today and tried a few on, settled for a Thor Belt that feels absolutely mint when on.
Off out riding tomorrow (that should please Mr **R1**) so will give it a good test in the riders seat...
