Got myself a new toy on thursday, a mint as KTM 250exc 2t, took it for 1st ride this morn. yep a bit diff than the trusty old xr400. All was going well, fiddled with susp then tried different power valve settings, found it nicer to have it come on pipe late in the revs.
Was about to head back to ute n pack up so thought I'd try a wheelie on the gravel road, bad idea!!
Fukker came up nice then right at balance point the power band hit..............ouch!! What a dick.............flipped at about 60kph and hit down on right side..............doctor says "thats the worst AC shoulder separation I've seen" .............buggar! I thought it was broken so not all bad hahaa. Managed to gash my knee nicely too, split it open down to kneecap.

All good fun when riding alone, lucky I had cell phone so was able to get help.:innocent:

The bike hardly has a mark on it haha...............all in all a good day out. A month off works gonna be a bit boring, at least the parts I ordered will show up hehe!!

Yep I had some fun with a ktm 250 2t recently. Except for me it was the kicker - took the shin skin off to the bone. Made me cry like a little girl it did.
Dunno what it was about that bike, first kickstart in a long time that had bit me. Half and hour earlier I was kicking and riding an XR600.

Hope you heal up soon buddy.

Its voodoo I tell you!!!!!

Ah yeah the old 2Ts can be tricky to wheelie... never got the hang of it with my old RM250. I did plenty of wheelies, but very few of them were my idea and when I did try myself, it was either about 2 cm off the ground or a crossbar in the face.

We headed down to guppy road one evening on my trustynristy PE 250 and my mate who had ridden LOTs according to him pulled the most massive rooster tail donut vicious high side I've ever seen. From a standstill. Asked him if he wanted another go....wasn't keen for some reason.

lotta hurt and pain has happened down guppy river over the years.....
or 'dustys trail' back prior to the mid '80s when cyclone bola rearranged the trails for us
ive broken a collarbone down there, and a foot and that guy nigel curtis became a one arm bandit
due to a head on down there too

i had the dubious distinction of out running a council guy who was ken to nab me for jumping the stop banks. imagine my surprise a few weeks later when i rode through the fence newly installed and wound up with out me bike which was twisted like some sort of demented lolly in the wires, thatll teachme to ride into the sun at dusk and assume.....fuck that hurt

Yep, Ive done 80kph down the tar on my ass afta steppin of the back of my kx 250 with just boardys on, had to put my hand down to get myself rolling, the heel of my palm looked like it had been against a bench grinder, and my ass had its dressings changed daily by the district nurse, good times.

back in 2001 i had gone to Nelson for a couple of SUpercrosses, both got rained out, and i ended up with a few friends at the Wakefield pub, after a few jugs, a few shots and a couple of borbons the idea of taking my KX250 out and doing wheelstands up and down the road seemed like a good one, so in helmet and boots, and shorts and tee shirt i was off, on about my third pass i got a bit past the ballance poiunt, and went for the rear brake but was a bit slow, it was a bit messy,

15 stiches in my kneww, 12 in my hand, 5 in my elbow, and both palms very grazed up, i had to get someone to drive me back to auckland, was not the smartest thing i have ever done

First bike I ever did proper wheelies on was an IT200 on the road. Only time I flipped it, was when I tried to keep doing wheelies with my right arm in cast from fingers to shoulder.

I just got a drz400 and want to learn hw to wheelie properly. Any tips ?Be prepared to need to buy another one. Then just go for it. Slight twist of the throttle should bring the wheel up on the DRZ, unless it's an SM and then it requires a tug on the bars. Once it's up you'll get the feel of it progressively, and learn to modulate the throttle in time.

Have fun.

Will do Drew and no it's not a SM but the front doesn't seem to lift as easily as I had hoped. Still I will piss about till I get it right.

Cheers AndyYou sound prepared to accept a sore arse, so I'll elaborate a touch.

Take off and roll the throttle as normal, when you get to the mid rev range, 'tweak' the throttle a little further quite quickly. You'll soon get the hang of how much at what point in the rev range.

That should get the wheel up, if it doesn't, as you 'tweak' the throttle give a tug on the bars and 'Bob's your uncle'.

Biggest most important part of a wheelie is throttle control. Smooth modulation is the key to long smooth monos. Your spoilt on the DRZ for ease of hoisting, but disadvantaged when you get near the balance point because it moves as the suspension compresses and extends. Take your time! You will not be world number one stunter after three days practice, and there are fuck all prizes for most scars on your arse, (trust me, I've got some serious scars up my left hand side from just one fuck up).

Go have fun, and you'll be doing stand ups through traffic just like the pros.

General disclaimer: I am in no way an expert on this....

That method may not be that useful for off road riding as you are usually wanting to lift the front at a specific place on the trail rather than at a particular speed, the method I was taught is based on trials riding / slow speed getting over large, lumpy things.
This works from idle up, just watch out for power bands.
Clutch in, push hard down on the front suspension then pull back , move your weight back and release the clutch at the point of pulling back, throttle is rolled on slightly as the clutch is released.
This will lift the front as high as you want and you can choose where you get the lift, ie: in front of a log / hole at a controllable speed.

Probably not much use for stand ups through traffic tho, so ignore it if I missed the point entirely!
