Where to find wood panels cut to size?

KB citizens been rather helpful lately so thought I'd throw this out there -

I'm trying to find in Canterbury somewhere that sells large wood panels, and will cut them to size for you.

I've got 5 sliding doors with aluminum frames, and I want to replace the middle with a new wood panel, then paint.

Last place I tried to find a panel for a door, they didn't cut them. I did a rough job cutting it with a jig saw, and only got away with it because I installed over top some frame maker cornices into the door frame.

I don't have much in the way of tools for wood working, only stuff I use on bikes mainly.

Take you measurements to smiths city market. .
The Belfast shop is probably your best bet.
They will cut most sheets to size for you
Be aware you may have to pay for a full sheet,
And of course pay for each cut,
Other than this, they also often have off cuts from other customers, which may be the right size you want.

Can you not just use a straight edge and the jigsaw to cut them yourself? Easy enough to get straight lines, not as good as a skill saw but good enough.:Punk:

Any local kitchen, furniture or joinery company should be able to do it for you without any fuss if you give them the cutting sizes.

Or you can set yourself up with a couple of saw horses (& 3x2 rails between them) an aluminum straight edge as a saw guide (or clean edge off cut from one of your boards >250mm wide) and a couple of F clamps. Work out where you need to set the straight edge in order to position a skill saw so as to cut in the right place and clamp the straight edge in place. You can then place the saw against the straight edge and push it forward as you keep the saw sitting against the guide. Unless you are a total twat you should finish up with clean almost machine-like cut edges.

Not a job for a jig saw. You need a skillsaw

Prolly easier to pay $40 or $50 to one of the business's above.

Either way.. Measure twice, cut once.

And no mention of selling that sort of thing. But will know shortly once they open.

Never seen a smith city that sells wood, maybe we only get the electrical and furniture and whotnot down here.:confused: Seriously though fella, you can get a nice straight cut using a straight edge, even with a hand saw, I am guessing that the panels you want to cut would be no more that 12mm.:Punk:

7mm thick, 1171 x 1897

And thats the smallest one.

Got a cousin just out of town with some sort of table saw thing he used to build a boat, so just waiting to hear back if his saw can handle such large panels.

Mitre 10 Mega in Hornby will cut things for you - I used to work there in the drive thru/trade area. At least when I worked there it was our job to cut things to size for customers. They have hand saws/circular saws etc and at least I had to do it all the time. They should still help you out. Give em a call first before driving out.

Ive never been able to cut wood straight even with a good arm. Metal however I seem to manage.

Got the wood panel and they cut it to size I gave.

Then car wouldnt start and had to get it towed to mechanic.

So wood panel is sitting at mechanics, and my home renovations (and bike builds) have taken another blow of delays.
