Hi
I'm looking at buying a Bandit 1200. What do I need to look out for?

I'm struggling to find one under $5500 with less than 50-60,000 km on the clock

How much is too much k's on a bandit?

How much is too much k's on a bandit? As with pretty much any bike it's not the distance it has covered but how well it has been serviced a long the way.

I think you will find Bandits have pretty solid reliability and I am not surprised you can't find anything cheaper with less k's as 50,000 is barely run in!

Agreed, a lot of bike for the money.

Bandits are a very solid bike and are like the energiser bunny.

The worst thing I ever found on one of mine was a little surface rust on the weld at the rear sub frame. Easily fixed but just look out for that. But yeah mechanically wise these are bullet proof. My last four bikes have been Bandits.

Thanks for the advice. the last one would be perfect but getting to Dunedin then back again would be not work due to an external influence (if you know what I mean)! Also the cost of that trip would be better buying one up here.

So anything under 60k is ok?

Also had a look at one at Holeshot, it's done over 60k but it brings up another question about an imported one, this one has it's odo in miles. So my question is parts, resale value etc is similar as one that is in NZ newly registered?

Only ask because there is another one that's in miles that's a bit better.

The Blue is 16,895km as stated in the link....surely?
My wifes Bandit is also in Miles and Kms..can be set to either.
The Blue Bandit looks a good buy.

The blue one has the later motor so better. I think 2000 they had the old motor with new fairing.

If your funds could stretch to $6K, you should be all over this six year old black beauty..http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-471593444.htm

I saw that, it's nice, real nice but want something comfortable for longer trips. I was initally wanting to for the CB1300s but they are out of my price range.

I owned a CB1300 for just over three years up until recently...them, the Bandit/GSX1400/XJR1300 and the ZRX will give all you want in a grunty tourer. Stick to your budget and first thought, is good advice.

I was also looking at the XJR1300 too, only coz my last was a XJ900 (pre diversion) and it was good and reliable but it felt like it was missing an extra gear, needed a 6th. But because of the shaft drive I couldn't fit a different sprocket to change the ratio. However the bandit has nice styling and a good fairing which looks like a half fairing (that can added too?) and a relatively bullet proof engine.

I've also been on another thread:

Makes me think I might do a Return-To-Ride course with Riderskills.co.nz. You guys heard of them? any thoughts?

Exactly. Focus on the service history (or lack thereof) as opposed to simply how big the odo number is.
