View Full Version : ZX10R anti wheelie question

I have recently got that stirring feeling for a 2011 ZX10R. Can someone tell me a bit about the antiwheelie crap it has on it?
If I got one can I clutch up a high slow wheelie in 1st from say a red light to impress chicks? ie do a clutched up wheelie and keep it below 70km/h
I like clutching up slow wheelies its fun to me and a big part of MY sport bike riding. Will I be shit out of luck with the new electronic aids?

Got any clips of you doing one of your signature wheelies?
I'm pretty familiar with Kawasaki's anti wheelie system. The most common type is KMOS, or Kawasaki Mass Overload System; pronounced kay-moss.
This is a passive system (and equipped to almost all of their bikes since the early 90s), and some might say not as good as the likes of BMW's electronic anti-wheelie control. However, the benefits of a passive system mean it is always in effect, and you do not have to worry about electricery taking control of the throttle at a bad time.
However, passive systems are a lot harder to disable than the electronic ones. For you to remove the effects of KMOS, you will have to modify a lot of the components, including the engine, frame, fairing, wheels, brakes, and other parts too numerous to mention. If you look up 'Shervin', he is a pioneer on the removal of the KMOS system, although I think he used a ZX10 the principals are similar. Or even kb's own Ducatilover has done extensive work in this field as well.

thanks bogan, so what your saying is that the anti wheelie on the gen 4 is no different to that on previous model zx10s ?
I thought the gen 4 had some new flash electronic anti wheelie built in, Jimmy? yes or no ?

I'm not too sure on the details, but they added some new bits and updates to ABS etc, so it's likely these just enhance the KMOS effect. I wouldn't be surprised if the marketeers portray simple improvements as new systems.

No mirrors at your place?
This oughta be fucken good.
Tut, tut. We all know this will end in tears.
The bigger question here is why would you need to use the clutch to wheelie a modern 1000cc (or 600 for that matter) in FIRST gear? Am I missing something? Have I slipped into an alternate universe where sports bike have 30hp? Oh bugger, it's the 1950s again. Must be a delayed Y2K event.

No mirrors at your place? No actually not one. got any videos of your signature crashing? did they have video back then? I know they didnt have bikes with anti wheelie control/traction control/mapping switches and shit like that. I have never ridden a bike with that shit so I just want to understand what it does in the real world. I understand its all great for lap times but what do all these aides mean for the average road squid like me that just wants to tool around and be a larriken doing skids and wheelies (the slower the better less mess that way if something does go wrong)
Im still unclear can you clutch up a wheelie in 1st gear on a gen 4 ZX10R? any one ? I know you can in 2nd but 1st?

Yeah nasty and fun I have clutched slow wheelies in 1st on a 06 1000RR an it was exactly like a 600. So I guess you forget about the clutch in 1st Ill carry on peace
I just want to know if its possible on these new fan dangle electronic gizmode bikes
can you not see the appeal of doing a slow wheelie at 50km/h in first rather than powering up in 1st and doing 100 before you know it ?

My understanding is that the wheelie control is incorporated into the traction control which can be turned off.
So you trying to get a girl huh?

She'll fall off the back.
She'll fall off the back.
And then all bikers will get a bad rep, I know two chicks who are terrified of motorcycles because their friend broke both legs after falling off cos some dude was trying to show off at about 30kmhr in a straight line. Not sure what you guys reckon, but it sounds to me like the muppet was trying to do a wheelie (probly with the clutch), fucked it up, and ended up hitting a tree at around 70kmhr.

I don't know the Kawasaki system, but if it's like the BMW one, then it's simply measuring the wheel speeds of front and rear, and when there is a greater than acceptable difference it cuts in. Spinning up the rear wheel and pulling a wheelie is effectively the same thing to the computer, the rear is spinning faster than the front.
As Death says, if traction control is switchable, turn off and away you go.
Seems you were asking a serious question, not taking the micky. I had the pleasure of doing a full throttle run through the gears on a near new ZX10R recently (the lastest model). The Owner told me the anti-wheelie was on low setting so I gather it can also be turned off. Anyway, in 3rd gear it started to lift the front smoothly and I resisted the instinct to back off a fraction, remembering the owner's word to just hold it wide open.
Wise move, the system slowly intervened and gently lowered the front, whilst not interrupting the full tit acceleration- it was awesome!
Does his name start with a G and was it an SV1000 ?
No idea, but I wouldn't be surprised if, even in palmy, there were a few such incidents

I know a dude who was in an incident that sounds suspiciously similar. Had his brothers wife on back of bike "changed down a gear and the front wheel just came up", she broke both her legs and he smashed his collar bone I think, ribs, lung etc..

Having riden with Death and I know how much he loves his kwackers, I happy to take his word for it that there is a switch somewhere amongst the electronic wizardary on it thats says thanks but no thanks maybe later to antiwheelie control/traction control.

Double ouch, inflicting injuries to the sister-in-law might take the longest to heal! Does sound pretty similar though.
You see clutchitup, if you fuckitup, you get way more bad press for us bikers than if you doitright, so don't fuckitup!

I am well and truley familiar with this system, I cannot go in to specifics due to a legally binding agreement between myself and the KMOS developer.
What I can say, is I did overcome the KMOS system and the ASRCD (Anti-Squid-Rider-Control-Device) and the results were spectacular.

As long as you signed the test ride form like everone else, of course I would. I'm one of the only people I know that wrote a bike off on a test ride! And the car I 'T' Boned.

I think the gold powerband mod will fix it. But it adds extra 2K to the price tag. However since it will void any waranties, the bike shop will more then likely refuse to fit it for you. It is not actually that hard to fit. All you need is a left handed screw driver.

Yeah they are really tame bikes when your out of the powerband, i find my bike hard to take off fast from stopped, i either dont rev enough and take off slow or rev a little too much and wheelie off.
Super fun bikes, just not the most convenient, but if i wanted convenience i would just drive my car.
