Southern Rider Escapade

This year is our 4th annual Southern Rider Escapade and would be great if you can put the event in your club news letter.

The Escapade is a bike road rally with a slight difference. You are given a route to take, and a long this route you must answer questions that are given on a question sheet. You then return the question sheet with your answers, and your badge is sent out to you after the close off date for completing the Escapade.

The dates are not set in stone for a weekend that you do it on. You have from 1 September till 30th November, a period of 3 months to complete. You can do it in your own time, by yourself or with a group. You can do it in one day go or a couple of days and make it a holiday away. You can do it in any order you like as long as you get all the questions. You can start the loop any where and finish anywhere.

The important things are;

You must get as many of the answers as you can. (Don't be too worried about getting a question wrong or missing one…)
You must have fun doing it.

Here are some FAQ's that will help answer any questions you have.

Route looks good, I'm in after last year was a non starter.

If anyone is planning a ride for this, drop me a line and I'll see if I can make it fit the schedule.

How long per stop to answer the questions would be expected. Just trying to guage time on the road to complete the loop realisticly.

Wot he said

Last time I did this most stops were as long as it took me to get the camera out and take a photo of the answer, just dump the pics from the camera at the end and fill out the answer sheet.

Entry fee paid, entry form in the mail.....

Did one the year before last. It was a good couple of days. I'm easy with this years Escapade. Mrs J has made noises about coming to. (On the back of my bike though) Was not planning on organising anything, but the more the merrier. Would look at taking a couple of days to do it. Perhaps home to Hokatika, then Hokatika to Wanaka, then Wanaka to home. Two nights away. But as I said before, I'm easy.

It would be a great first event. You are probably too late to ask here at KB, but if you ask the same question at http://southernrider.co.nz/ocportal/ you may get a satisfactory answer.

Well that's done and dusted for another year. :niceone:

A slightly damp ride to Hokitika on Thursday with an extra little fun ride to stay the night at a bach at Lake Kaniere.

Bright and sunny Friday morning and only a couple of small patches of rain on the way to Queenstown to catch up with friends and bludge a bed in their 5 star apartment.

Another lovely day on Saturday to cruise down to Cromwell for a quick social stop, then on to Lake Tekapo and pitch the tent by a lake and a few quiet drinks under the stars.

Yet another great day Sunday to wander up the inland road and pick up the last of the answers, then onwards to home for a rest.

Looking forward to 2013 already.....

All the questions bar one, cause I read the paper and did not actually read it well enough... time meant I was not going to do the round trip to get back to it. I know where it is now, and am mighty curious to find out what on earth it was for.

got to Sheffield turned left instead of right & shot up to Lake Sumner rd & stayed the night with our son.... then back out to where we left off, detoured to the Chequered Flag for lunch.... got a bit of rain just before Fairlie through to Burks... then just before the summit in the Lindis to about 2/3 through other than that dry roads & a great ride

a big cheers :apint: to Nighthawk for getting this sorted

Brilliant day Friday Oxford to Haast, wet pretty much all the way Haast to Ross and through Arthurs. Surprised by number of bikes on the coast in the rain, guess you don't get much choice. Great ride and a few things I would never have stopped to see plus the odd one I didn't stop to see.

Mrs Shrek

:woohoo: All done at the weekend on the "Hobbit Bike". Mostly good weather but glad I took along my wets. Hands got a bit :cold: coz the heated grips aren't working.
Stayed in Franz the first night after a great ride in beautiful sunshine. Woke up to drizzle the next day but road out of it not too far up the road.
Did the metal road option between Hoki and Kumara.... good old coasters met two of them on my side of the road on the corners both times  Have to admit that most of the way I was asking myself how Shrek had convinced me to take that route and reminding myself that next time if I have the option I will take the easy way..... but I know I won't
Poured down between Jacksons and Arthurs pass. Discovered that the rain comes onto the inside of my visor.... so annoying
Detoured to Nth Canterbury to see some of the kids and stayed the night.
Headed back the next day and even managed to keep the bike at 100 kph coz the wind was in my favour all the way to Rangitata. Stopped for lunch and the wind changed direction..... made for a slow :ride: home.
Got home, had a shower and sleep
Only 1 :shit: moment when I wasn't concentrating properly for a 35 bend.
Great ride and company... thank you for being patient when the wind was blowing me backwards

Did all the West Coast questions yesterday. Ashburton to Ashburton via Haast Pass and Aurthurs Pass in 13 hours. Bums sore today, but what a great ride. I would live on the West Coast at the drop of a hat. There is just no way I could get Mrs 'J' to move back there after she spent her childhood in Harihari and Kaiata:no:

Completed question sheet in the mail tomorrow...............thanks again for a great 'Escapade' guys

Completed now back in Wanganui....

Was Certainly an eventful trip....Starting with how the hell could one stuff up Bangers n mash and the mash actually ruined the peas :( .....mind up the buller Gorge just on dusk made up fo it....

After a night in Greymouth it was through Arthurs and down to Cromwell...The thief in Arthurs pass had us in fits of laughter as he flog Mels lollie cake of the plate right in front of her....Bloody keas

A decent dinner in Cromwell at a Speights bar brought the day to a end......

but nothing what so ever had me ready for what happened the yesterday morning,as I went to get the motel manger to get our bikes out of his garage he came into the office stark naked :weird:

Once on the road we detoured to Arrowtown then on to Cardrona taven for breaky good feed and had a great trip up the coast back too Greymouth must remamber to fill up before Fox glacier from now on as once I stop the bike I couldnt turn thed then alam off,as it happens some fancy new tower just told installed in the town plays havic with some alam systems,The lady at the Servo then told me that I would have too push the bike a couple of hundard meters down the road a fully loaded trophy it felt like 1200 meters....

Today we went upto Blackball and then onto The Pike 29 memorial a fitting tribrute we were inpressed

Thanks for another great adventure we will be back
