Depends on ...

current air stream
rain/fog
time (there is a very small window of oppertunity when you are not in peak traffic)
what phase the moon is in
tardos on the motorway (related to above)

I do this quite often. Usually takes about 75 minutes (at legal speeds). BUT. You never know when there's going to be a holdup. I always add 30 minutes as a buffer, especially if there is a deadline to meet.

If you push it and get no hold-ups, then sub 60 is possible. But of course I'D never do that...:innocent:

We used to do just on an hour to get from Sarf Auckland to the northern end of the Tron. Traffic starts to get crappy on the motorway anywhere from about 3pm from Penrose onwards so the time buffer is a good idea.

If you're hitting auckland between 3-6pm get ready for a mind blowing afternoon. Sitting in traffic on the motorway.

we will be in a shitbox rental car and arriving about 7 in auckland will the traffic be heavy then?

Time frame is what it's all about up here: traffic leaving the airport to head south is horrendous anywhere from 3.30/4ish onwards with the shittiest bottlenecks at onramps to motorway. Stays heavy though to Drury, but thereafter it should be pretty sweet.
If you are leaving the airport early evening (away from "end of work" traffic) then a straightforward run would still probably take the best part of 90 mins, at the speed limit.

By the time you hit the motorway out of the airport, you should be seing the tail end of afternoon rush hour, so the traffic will more then likey be getting lighter as you progress south

They take Yen and Taro in Auckland, and Woodstock bourbon and cola in Hamilton.

Why not fly to Hamilton? Unless there are no direct flights from wherever...

There are no direct flights from Dunedin to Hamilton. You either do Dunedin - Wellington - Hamilton or Dunedin-Auckland then drive to Hamilton

Just be aware of the amount of tax collectors on that stretch of road. Nice and straight means an easy trap for unwary.

Bridges with on-ramps are one favourite lurking spot.

And don't we know it...... Especially the one north of Huntly where the 4 lane finishes. Also the one by Hampton Downs is a fave lunch time parking spot for the popo

Every time I go back to Auckland from Gore it takes me a couple of days to get back into the hectic pace the traffic moves at, and all those fucking lights.

Did you meet her mother... or was that her brother... or both?
But the banjo's playing at night are nice! I think they find playing them easier with their 6 fingers. :)

Then there's the fact that Taro isn't accepted out west but Woodstock is. It's complicated
