View Full Version : Minginui - Matawai - Motu Midwinter Madness Ride 28-29 July 2012

The world famous MMMMM Ride is on again 28-29 July
Register on the calendar here: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=3006&day=2012-7-28
The ride will kick off from the Rangitaiki Tavern on the Napier-Taupo Rd Saturday morning at 8am sharp. There is food, beer, basic cabins & camping there for those who want to arrive Friday night. Phone them on 07 384 2803 to book yourself a bed.
More comfy accomodation, & extra bunks are also available 5km back down the road towards Taupo at the Rangitaiki Lodge. They have a couple of nice motel units, some tidy cabins & a bunkhouse. Call them on 07 384 2800 to book. As the Lodge bar usually closes at 8 the main Friday night gathering/meal/beers will be back at the pub.
8am Saturday we will leave the Pub & head North along the Waipunga Rd. The washed out crossing is now an easy ford doable on any adv bike. We will use the cornerman system through the forest to Minginui. Weather & time permitting there will be an optional short challenge section for those with light bikes & decent tyres.
If anyone wants to join in at Minginui be at the Minginui Road turnoff on SH38 at 9:30am. We will stop in at the Waikaremoana Motor Camp for a coffee & fuel.
We will then continue on from Waikaremoana, to Wairoa (if you need gas), Tiniroto Pub for some refreshments & a few backroads to Matawai. I will post up a route sheet & GPS tracks so people can do their own pace Minginui - Matawai & have the choice of bypassing Wairoa on backroads if time & fuel range permits. You need 230km fuel range to bypass Wairoa. I'm adding in another easy gravel optional section after Tiniroto for those making good time too.
At Matawai the pub is now booked out, but the campground over the road has heaps of bunks, ph 06 867 5016 or 027 445 8755, or this place: http://www.nzstays.co.nz/East-cape-region/Matawai/Farm-Cottage-6061.aspx 15km away. The pub does dinner, they might do a buffet this year to cut down the wait for a meal, watch this space for details.
On the Sunday we'll head out to Matawai then off down the Motu Rd to Opotiki, From there the route is routesheeted again via some highway & a few more backroads back to my place at Rotoiti.
Any trailer scum planning to attend are welcome to drop their car & trailer at my place for the weekend.
Remember this is a MIDWINTER ride. Based on previous MMMMM rides there is a 100% chance it will rain, a 50% chance of snow, an 80% chance it will be bloody cold & a 100% chance that all those mad enough to do the whole ride will have lots of fun. The main route is all tar & gravel roads, nothing technical, do able on any adventure bike with any tyres. Some of the gravel is often fairly rough & muddy though so you will enjoy the ride more with some knobbyish rubber, particularly if you are a n00b or on a bigger bike.
Distances:
Taupo - Rangitaiki Pub - 35 km (no fuel)
Rangitaiki Pub - Minginui - 75km (no fuel)
Minginui - Waikaremoana 70km (thats 180km from Taupo - pack extra gas if you've got a small tank)
Waikaremoana - Wairoa 60km (Waikaremoana - Matawai on Ohuka Rd etc 230km)
Wairoa - Matawai 180km
Matawai - Opotiki 75km
Safety: This ride has been getting fairly big & it's hard to keep track of everybody. There will be a sweep rider(s) on the main route who will attempt to assist if you have a problem. If you are riding with mates please check that everyone has made it through each stage. If you are on your own you can note down your name, rego, next of kin & ph numbers on a card or bit of paper & give it to me at the start of the day, then collect it back from me at the end so we know you're not still out there. If you do have to bail & don't see the sweep riders call the pub & leave a message.
Check back on this post closer to the day as more info will be added.
Cheers
Clint

Just spoke to the bloke over the road from the Matawai pub with the bunkbeds.
we wants us to consolidate and send him one list of who will be there on the night, sounds like it's too much trouble to book us in individually.
It's $30 for the night, includes showers and kitchen. bring your own bedding.
anyone else going. pm me if you are and i will sort it out.

One other alternative is to zip back to Gisborne for the night. I think a couple of Wgtn people are thinking of doing that. Of course that will mean that you'll definitely miss out on the saturday night bullshit sessions, but...:baby:

Unbelievable! He's charging about twice as much as it's worth & he can't even be bothered doing bookings! Thanks for taking that on Gman.
I did send a msg to my mate in Matawai enquiring about other accom options around the village but I haven't heard back, I'll give him a call over the weekend.
That link is still live for the farm cottage, not sure if anyone has booked it yet though, if so let me know & I'll remove the link so they don't get hassled.

I'm in.... I'm riding the R80 (on road tyres, subject to a test ride in mud on sunday) so feel free to give expressions of interest in the BMW pushing game, I should only need three or so people at a time so there will be plenty of time to get your own riding in.
Riding down friday so I will be in touch with Gman and anyone else interested, west coast to Pio Pio then thru Pureora to Taupo, has anyone saved / got a spare bed at Rangitikei? Camping at Matawai, I assume there is somewhere flat and not under water near the pub.
My one aim will be to not get passed by Rosie this year.

Ok, since the revelation of the shipping container with a torch, and the fact I found a pic with 4 inches of snow outside the matawai pub, I have searched for other 'options'-
New option:
There is a Luxury Lodge / B&B/Homestay thingy over the road. I have spoken to them. usually $165 dinner/bed/breakfast.
Have said there may be a few takers, and we probably wont need dinner, assuming the pub will provide that.
So now the rate is $100 including a breakfast, and by the sounds of it it will be quite nice. "Luxury B&B" has such a nicer ring to it than "Shipping container with torch in roof for light"
Also heard last time, campground forgot to open toilets, few problems etc last time, and owner may be away at the time. Emphasis on word "away"
They only have 4 beds ( i have booked 2 of them) so 2 left, but the lady said if others aren't that fussy, they can work something out- so maybe matresses, camps stretchers will be on offer...?
again- happy to co-ordinate this as well- 2 have already stuck their hands up for the container/bunks, will take bookings for the B&B as well and see what we can sort out.

I am mentally in for this ride, I have my heated grips installed (which has been my very poor excuse for not coming other years).
Being this late on the accommodation front I guess I am going to be tenting it, or maybe I can find some floor space somewhere. Either way I shall be prepared.
Will join the AK crew for the trip down on friday if the timing works.

Hi Gman hows the bookings going for the container accomodation ?
The shipping containers at this point are totally free. After very bad reviews.
However the 'luxury B&B' opposite (?) the pub has 5 confirmed bookings of a possible 6 spots available (maybe more if floor, stretchers etc are acceptable)
Feel free to stick you hand up for a container berth.

Update. Beds all gone at the B&B.
Space available for others to 'crash there' (price to be advised)
Breakfast on offer also to anyone interested on the Sunday morning.
Price for 'crash and breakfast' and 'breakfast only' probably available when numbers firm up.

The truly hardcore can tent at the campground no problem, it's very close to the pub. You could call the pub & ask about camping there. The pub did us a pretty good brekky last time.
Jatz, if you are thinking of coming up you are welcome to the bed in the shed at my place if you want to come stay before/after.

Last time I did it it was freezing the trip from Taupo to the pub wa OK it was that Bl--dy cold ice was forming on the front of your jacket the 950 KTM's where running funny (icing up the carbs) but a steady pace out to the pub was no problem people had come over from Napier the same morning. The worst part was the first creek crossing going into the forest (ICE) caught a few out.
Should be good.

Gidday Clint et al,
I'll most likely be in. I'll be carrying my bivvy or small tent. I'll see what the camping ground has to offer on Saturday night or might just rough it somewhere (only problem with that is missing out on the beers & BS!). If someone wants to make up numbers/ reduce costs at other accom I'm open to ideas. I want to stay at the Rangatik on the Friday this year (no, not tenting if I can help it :cold: ). Yep, I'll make some phone calls sometime soon. Hmmmmm, new front rubber, new chain n sprockets, oil change, bleed those brakes & clutch, maybe change the fork oil... yep should be just enough time.

Hi All, attached is the routesheet for your navigational enjoyment. Please also carry a map.
If you don't have a rollchart holder & are contemplating just printing out the sheets & reading them along the way, please do, I find it absolutely hilarious watching people chasing bits of sodden A4 blowing around in the wind & rain.
Can't post a gpx file here, so download the GPS route over on advrider : http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=19100466#post19100466 (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=19100466#post19100466)
Rosie's notes on the GPS stuff:
They are designed to run with the NZ Open GPS Project maps, and have been tested on the maps created between May 17th and July 5th (Having up to date maps is very important, this route didn’t work with the maps I downloaded in October). Maps can be downloaded here:
http://nzopengps.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6:downloads&catid=7:how-to-documents&Itemid=11
The maps either run through Mapsource, or, for newer GPSses (e.g 62s) you can copy the *.img files straight from \Program files\NZ Open Autorouting GPS project\ into the appropriate directory on the GPS.
I will attempt to help out if anyone is having problems getting the maps and/or routes onto their GPS. But if people are having trouble, I would respectfully suggest that they also carry the routesheets as a backup.
There are five routes, and a variety of waypoints. Some waypoints are useful things like fuel and food, some are just for navigation. I’ve also included a few waypoints for petrol stations that aren’t on the main route.
Since we’ll be corner-manning through the Waipunga first thing on Saturday, the routes all start from where we regroup in Minginui.
The routes should be fairly self-explanatory:
Sat AM Fuel – for people who need to go to Wairoa for fuel
Sat AM No Fuel – for people who do not need to go to Wairoa for fuel
To avoid confusion, I’d recommend deleting the route you don’t intend using.
The lunch/fuel stop at Waikaremoana is marked as a waypoint (hopefully a little knife and fork, but who knows)
Both routes end up at the pub in Tiniroto. From there, it’s time to choose a new route:
Sat PM Short – the (slightly) more direct route to Matawai
Sat PM Long – incorporates an extra gravel loop on the way to Matawai.
Both end up at the Matawai pub.
On Sunday, there is only one route – Sun
The lunch stop in Opotiki is marked as a waypoint, as is Clint’s house where the ride finishes.
Cheers

Simple reason is that several of the roads you're using didn't exist in the maps back then, and do now. Namely those through Kaingaroa Forest. I know... coz I had them added
edit: For those using Mapsource, it's also best to open the file and right click on each route and ask to re-calculate. This also assumes Mapsource and your GPS are using the same mapset. Important, because of constant changes in routing within the maps.

Thanks Rosie, I did not even think to check the route-sheet. My bad.
Very looking forward to this ride, Love rides with route-sheets, such navigational fun.
Did you check the first post? It's in there too
Simple reason is that several of the roads you're using didn't exist in the maps back then, and do now.
The slip on Ohuka road (which has since been cleared) was actually where the route was coming unstuck.
The section through Kaingaroa has not been included in the routes - it will be run exclusively on the corner-man system. And woe betide anyone who takes along their own GPS route, and subsequently gets lost in the forest :nono:

Snaffled the last bed, Meant to be I guess. I will be there. Just need to find digs for the Saturday evening. Whitikau conservation campsite is looking attractive. FREE! :) Close by as well. Means doing half the Motu though to get there.....Might be better to sling it to Opotiki? Container prices if they are $30? I will ride around to look for a gypsy campsite, rough it for the night and wake early as I will be bloody cold.....Fill up on beer and get a good nights sleep.

That public access easement from Waipunga to Minginui is only a legal access during daylight hours - is that noted somehow in the open gps maps? I've been through there lots of times at night with no problems but if you are going to broadcast it to the world you need to get the details right.

I've been chasing a dry spot on the Saturday night to (todays miserable rain reminded me more about that really wet Sunday on the '10 ride). I might end up in the container to... Cold I can handle, heavy rain is just a pain in the bivvy (reminds me, must buy a small brolly! ).
Rangatik's full but they'll do some floor space for me on the night.
Well, new 21 inch TKC at the front door waiting for me to go out and fit it. New sprockets in hand. Waiting on chain to arrive...
I've screen printed each pages of Clints' course notes & uploaded to my IPOD as jpgs. Not quite as good as SatNav but it'll work for me (with country roads book as backup).
A side note / forethought:

Broadcast it and end up with more tourists up there, then road upgrades because they get stuck, then more road upgrades because they want to take airconditioned coaches and articulated camper RVs there, then eventually we've got ourselves another straight sealed road with double yellow lines 90% of the way... (or riding in the dust of more campervans or finding them coming around every second corner on the wrong side...) Is that what we want (of our playgrounds in general)?
Joni Mitchell sang of things along this line in 1970 & it still applies, "They paved paradise to put up a parking lot". (Ref: "Big Yellow Taxi" in Ladies of the Canyon or in Miles of Aisles (Live)). That's on my IPOD to now :).

It's a public access easement over forestry roads, maintenance is entirely on the whim of the forestry company, eg the route around the washed out crossing remained a rough 4x4 track for over a year. What I'd be worried about is if the track gets lots more use inevitably there will be issues & Kaingaroa Timberlands will be looking for ways to restrict access. Already public access to the Kaingaroa estate has been severly curtailed compared with in the past.

Been watching this with interest, we have similiar problems in the Naki :(.

Have planed a cool route on the GPS incorperating some of yours in two sections: Havelock to Waikeri (194 klm 3.28 hrs) via some backroads and Waikeri to Havelock highway (255klm 3.47hrs). There is a little optional section just before Minginui that, weather & time permitting, I may lead those with lighter bikes, decent knobs & the desire to help push the 640 up a couple of slippery bits  through. It's only a couple of km though so I wouldn't base bike & tyre selection on that too much.

I am going to ride up to Napier Friday (got the day off), & will overnight there. I'll ride up to Rangitaikei early Saturday morning.
The ride thru the Forestry & down to Lake Waikaremoana are core parts of the ride to me. That & the Motu on Sunday.
I will be doing Sunday ride thru the Motu to Opotiki, then intend to ride back through the Motu, Whakerau Rd, then back to Napier. Home Monday.

Thanks very much for GPS routes. However I am having a little trouble with them. Any help would be appreciated.
I have downloaded the most recent NZ Open GPS Project maps to my PC and Garmin Oregon unit.
The routes are all showing correctly on mapsource on my pc.
I have then sent the routes I want (e.g sat am no fuel) to the Oregon.
The problem comes when I view the route on the unit: for example 'sat am no fuel':
- Instead of the route taking me left at Ohuka Rd as it should, I'm being taken all the way to Frasertown, then left to Te Reinga, where it then shows the route as a fork: left to the Erepeti rd waypoint (as a there and back) and also right to Tiniroto (not as shown on mapsource).
I guess the problem is in how my routing is set-up? I have it set to on-road guidance (it won't work for off-road guidance as there are too few waypoints). It routes the same whether it is set to 'on road for time' or 'on road for distance'.
This 'forked' routing also appears on the sat pm routes too on my unit (so presumably it's not due to the Ohuka slip thing).
Is this happening to anyone else?

Me, what can possibly go wrong? NOTHING!! I havn't done this ride before so not sure how slippery the terrain is going to be. If the gravel bits are anything like the roads in southern HB you could ride them with slicks at the moment, hard packed with very little loose stuff. The scottsman in me says eek some more miles out of the E07 and save the mt21, but if theres going to be any mudd, grass or clay bits I will put on the newby.

One day ride not that hard Marty. You will be fine. :apumpin::apumpin: Just a bit taxing on the butt by the end. Ride through the forest is pretty fast, open & not demanding. Around the Lake can be cold & the amount of gravel varies according to the last time it was graded or resurfaced. I'm riding again this year with the same free :niceone:, throw away 2nd hand knob tyre from the Honda Shop & a well used Adv tyre on the rear & not worried at all.
Two years ago (as mentioned earlier on this thread) . . . it's the ice we struck on the Nap/Taupo that you have to be most careful of.
My mate & I had a bit of fun at Te Haroto (once off our bikes) skating on the edge of the road in our MX boots. Then I road the last 20ks to Rangitaiki with my googles off as they had frozen up in the inside through the fog LOL. A very slow 20ks, as we couldn't see a thing!

Probably tag along for the Saturday round the block Napier to Napier group. Used to regularly drive SH5 in linehaul truck so I'll be the canary for the spotting the icy spots (famous last words). Metvuew site looks like changable weather and approaching front so hopefully they'll be enough wind to ward off the ice. Works has been good with that new grit and acetate deicing compound during last few years that ice risk has been reduced greatly.
The coldest part is always the plains along lochinvar straight to the start of the waipungas, often saw minus seven through there on the trucks external temp gauge.
Did run through SH38 at end of may, most of gravel was packed down hard like concrete so prob had a good grade since then.

Ugh, what a pain. I don't have any experience with Mapsource, so I'm not sure how you'd get it to update the map on your GPS. You could try asking on the GPS thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/93383-GPS-mapping-and-GPS-units-you-use).
There had been a big slip on Ohuka Rd which closed it until a couple of months ago. Consequently older versions of the Open GPS maps won't show Ohuka Rd going all the way through, so your GPS will route you around it (which takes you all the way to Frasertown). I had the same problem, until I updated the maps. But you are right, carrying the routesheets and a map is a good idea. I will be doing that too.
Don't worry guys, I'm sure I remember Rosie offering to help you sort out your GPS at the Rangitaikei Pub Friday night ;)

On the Zumo 550 it's Main screen > spanner > Map > Map Info. However, if you are using the NZOGPS maps, tick only 2 listed as NZ Open GPS autorouting etc blah blah.
Having multiple maps (NZOGPS and Garmin etc) will map for a complete lacking of good routing, but excellent hilarity as the GPS tries to use both sets of maps at once.
This is important for the first time using NZOGPS. When you load new mapsets, they replace the old NZOGPS maps (unless you're running a custom setup), so the ticks stay, you use new maps etc.

On Friday afternoon Rosie & I will be heading from my place at Rotoiti via Te Teko to Minginui then doing the first section of the ride in reverse over to the Rangitaiki Pub via Waipunga.
If anyone else is coming over from our direction & wants to join us we will be leaving my place, 1325 SH30 Gisborne Pt, at 2pm. We will be turning off SH30 on to Galatea Rd at 2:45pm if anyone want to meet there. We will fuel up at Murupara before heading in to Minginui. NOTE: You need 240km range to do this option & make it to Waikaremoana without diverting to Taupo or Murupara for fuel.
If you want to get in to my place a bit earlier for a cuppa & some lunch you are welcome.
Cheers
Clint
Hi Clint, I'm guessing you will swing into Murapara 4 a splash-n-dash? What time would you likely be there you think? 3-20 to 3-30ish?

One day Loop plans for Hawkes Bay riders are as follows if anyone wants to tag along.
I'm meeting Marty (Night Falcon) at his place at 5.50am in Havelock North. Glad to hear 'Jimbo' is able to join us also Marty:clap:
Then we will ride to BP Connect Bay View(open 24 hrs), arriving there 6.15am. Gas up. Meeting GrantWB there & anyone else who would like to join us, or who is staying over in Hawkes Bay for the night for MMMMM.
Wade, hear you've been in contact with Marty, great, & Bart/ Pomgolian what are your plans ?. If any other Hv Nth riders want to meet at Marty's, suggest you pm him. Remember to be as quiet as poss when arriving on Sat so we don't wake the kids or neighbours ;)
We will meet Clint, Rosie & the group at the corner of Pohokura Rd. We will be there by 7.50/8.00 am :grouphug:LOL
On the return, maybe a stop at the nice Cafe 287 just South of Wairoa (3kms on the left past Wairoa), this cafe is open till 4.00pm. . . . then a stop for a hot or cold one at Waikare Pub in Putorino?

You are sounding like the ideal bloke to join us. . . . being able to spot the icy spots is a real bonus:2thumbsup
Welcome aboard ;)'Canary' .
I'm in!! As timing/luck would have it, I'm picking up a 2007 KLR650 Thursday nite. Dealer is putting on a Deathwing 42 on the rear and I've got a almost new T63 for da front. Weather looks like we have a nice window before the next front moves in so:2thumbsup all I have to do is not tell my wife I have bought a second motorcycle and I've got the weekend free!!

Thanks Rosie, Gremlin and Nightfalcon for the help with the GPS.
I have sorted it! It's all working as it should now.
Something to do with the older auto routing maps being stored on the units memory rather than the sd card. I only worked it out after stripping everything off it and adding maps back one by one. Very frustrating that when looking at the map information on the unit it doesn't give any details like date of update.
Now I just have to remember to take lots of spare batteries. The last ride I did in minus 5 meant I was going through batteries in the gps every half hour, they obviously don't like the cold.

If you are using cheap Alkalines or Rechargeables including the Energisers and Panasonics more than 6 months old I can understand that.
I have the Garmin MAP62s which has an advertised battery life up to 20 hours (Oregon's I think claim up to 16 hours) and using good batterys even in cold Otago with the backlight on continuously for most the day it goes for at least 14 hours hours with decent batterys, usually more like 16 or 17.
I now use and recommend the rechargeable Sanyo Eneloops in my GPS's and VIO helmet camera since being introduced to them, they do what the others advertise. They are so good so far that I have thrown out the other brands I had. They wake up and work best after the first 5 or 6 full cycles are complete.
Dick Smith has a 4 pack for $25 delivered (http://www.dicksmith.co.nz/product/S4414/eneloop-4-x-aa-ready-to-use-nimh-batteries) (well in CHCH they do at least).
If you give them a try let us know what you think... after you've used them for a bit.
I charge mine in the standard Energiser NiMH charger I already had for my old energisers, not so keen on fast (like 1 hour) chargers. Chargers that stop automatically when done are good.
Neither the Dick Smith Alkaline or the 6 month old Energisers I had would run my VIO camera, where as the Sanyos run it for several hours.
Good luck.
Forecast is looking good for sunday as well....frosts saturday morning (standard!)...:2thumbsup

Batteries can be a pain, sometimes they last forever, sometimes they are constantly going flat. I've got a charger wired into the bike, so at least I don't have to worry about batteries while I am riding. I'm still carrying several sets just in case though.

Wot is it with these GPS's at the moment? My Zumo of many years now, which I long ago loaded with NZ free AR, has taken it upon itself( herself actually; shes Karen the Ozzi!) to rearrange some stuff without asking first!
I was sitting back quite smugly, as I sometimes do, watching the gps issues here knowing that mine is just fine. Switched her on to clean up outdated routes and favs when I notice that on NZFree my home is in the middle of a very large brown space. Nearest road, a major 1 is about 4km by the screen when in reallity there are roads all around. None show on my unit, only the major roads like SH5 etc.
I download the latest version to my pc onto Mapsource and select it to go to my unit; all the fine detail is visable on Mapsource. Check the new map on Zumo; still the same, only major roads showing!
Does anyone know wots happened? Should I terminate Karens contract forthwith?
On another note, the recent weather event over the eastern ranges should add some xtra spice to the garvel roads out that way perhaps?;)

Have you checked the zoom level? As you zoom out further the GPS will show less roads.

Parikanapa Rd is down to 1 lane according to AA roadwatch (it was possibly only 1.25 lanes wide to start with...). And the Motu is narrow and scary and dangerous and has three river crossings - so business as usual there :)
As Gremlin said, have you fiddled with the zoom on the Zoomo? My 62s you have to zoom in a fair way to see minor roads. But my GPS is a boy, and yours is a girl, so YMMV

... My 62s you have to zoom in a fair way to see minor roads...
You can tweak all that stuff on the 62s so much that you can go too far, then you can't tell one road from the next as it can be made to show so much detail when zoomed out it all merges together. I did that then had to wind mine back in a bit.

Been out and bought some Eneloops (hidden at the very bottom of the display rack in dse - in a sea of energizers). Will be stuffing them in my bra (I'll put a couple in the gps too) along with a couple of chocolate croissants for brekkie at Rangitaiki. Sorted. I might even know where I'm going now.

I am winging it surely there must be somewhere around there on higher ground that you can throw up the tent. I think there is a backpackers or farm stay up the Motu somewhere. The Motu in the dark could be a new challange.

Bugger that Canary word sounds like something that will become a nickname too easily lol. I forgot to mention that I will warn of ice patches by releasing a shower of sparks from which ever side of the bike is closest to the ground. Unfortunately this release of heat energy may not be sufficient to provide any extra traction for the next rider through...
Done a quick add up via google maps and some maths from clints km summary for us round trippers. Looks like 79km from Bayview to Pohukura rd, 134km from pohukura to waikaremoana (subtracting 11km off from pohukura to Rangataiki pub), giving a total of 213km for first leg of Napier round trippers as far as fuel goes.
See you lot at the BP bayview in the morning then. Be on a White DR650, black and flouro yellow riding gear.
That stop at Cafe 427 wairoa sounds like a great idea, been meaning to stop in there for ages. Putorino always a good atmosphere too.

No need to worry though....as we now have the 'canary' ( yup, it's going to stick ) to test the ice. Thanks buddy for that. Will be nice to meet you.
Cool. It'll only take about an hour. As long as we're on the road before 7, because the rest of the crew won't get to the turn off until 8.15ish.
2 years ago the ice wasn't too bad on the road until over the hills towards Rangitaiki. The frozen fog was a bigger issue. Riding visor up into that crap at negative temps wasn't fun. I don't think it'll be quite that bad tomorrow. Light rain in Taradale at the mo.
Right, I'd better put down my beer and go sort some gear out.

If I remember rightly you looked rather cold covered in a layer of Ice at Rangitaiki. Metservice are saying it's down to 2.7 degrees at the moment in Taupo. http://www.metservice.com/towns-cities/taupo Forecast is -2 overnight. In 2010 it wasn't frosty in "taupo", but started to get frosty as soon as you started climbing out of Taupo on the Napier-taupo highway, and then into that lovely fog.
Enjoy yourselves, wish I could of made it this year.

Well what can I say shit happens ( bugger ) I had been doing so well until now.
Arrived back in Palmy @ 6:45pm put the bike in the shed and unloaded it.
Got the bath running what could be better right.
Finally got my riding gear off.
Cancel the bath I think we are off to A&E 7:30pm
Well the good folks up at A&E pushed and prodded me shoulder and said that doesnt look good.
And then the questions what time did it happen I said about 10:00am the nurse said typical bloke wait for ages to come to the hospital
I said I only jut got back into town the long way round boy did I get a funny look.
So blood test Xrays 2 litres of fluids and they said you've busted your collar bone.
Busted me collar bone but I could already see that once I got me gear off.
No you busted it good its in 3 pieces you will have to come back and see the specialist next week.
Well its now just after 3:00am and just got home from the hospital.
Time for some tea
Drugs :lol::lol::lol:
Looks like I am walking for a while.
I just like to thank the Bay day riders for making sure I got down to the Bay OK
To Johnny for picking me up at the seen and to GPS Man for the offer of a ride home if I needed it.
Like I said if I had taken me jacket off I would never have gotten it back on again.
The helmet and gloves were bad enough
Hope the rest of you enjoyed the ride.
See you out there sooner rather than later if I get my way.

Left dorkland just before mid-day Friday and took a fairly scenic route to get to Rangatiki pub about 4pm. Jatz was there on his new (to him) 800GS and it was in stunning condition. Chris was the first there but not by much. Great pub, funny as a funny thing were Mr and Mrs publican. Dranks well too much and had a huge pork and veg roast dinner for $20. I'd not organised accomodation and the publican oferred a matress on the floor of the bar for $20 - deal!
Breakfast was a mountain meal and with pork and pickel roast sandwitches we set off into the frosty morning.
The first part of the track was OK as long as I kept the speed reasonable. The washouts across the road certainly bottomed out the suspenders and my new bash plate started made several loud gong noises.
The track through to Minginui was OK with my tyres as it was quite dry. Jatz headed home from there.
Pushed through to Waikaremoana and the mud on the road around the top side of the lake was a pain.
I shot down to Wairoa and grabbed some gas. Sent a txt home and checked the weather forecast for Sunday. Hmmm rain. I then back tracked a little and then too the sealed road to Tinirota, that was good fun.
From the pub it was great riding until Rakauroa road where they'd been dumping gravel in some places about 100mm deep. Just about got down for a close look a couple of times.
For the last bit back to Matawai I was tossing up if I was going to do the Sunday ride in the rain and decided to wimp out and head home. I was happily tucked in bed by 11pm.
Got some speeding tax on the way home too, 118 along the straights north of Matata. Nice enough cop, but he could have saved some oxygen on the lecture. Apparently I'd be slidhtly less dead if someone pulled out in front of me if I was doing 100 - go figure.

Are you saying that one of your specified numbers is getting the notifications and not the others? Check that they are all entered in the same format.
I had a similar situation with ours - can’t remember offhand what the solution was but I’ll go back and have a look at my settings. I think it had something to do with how the country code was specified.

Well the Jaffa's (that I know of) all got back in one piece, that was the best riding conditions I've ever had on the MMMM, it was great to have the tme to enjoy the view and the weather was perfect, crisp and clear ish (once the fog was lifted... ) Talking of fog, I was sitting up on the first hill after starting the Motu and looking back at this sea of fog with a lime green ufo floating through it... it eventually became Jamies helemt, a great piece of HI-vis!
Friday: Great ride down the west coast to Pio Pio and met my Nemesis there..Colin! We did a mini liquefaction tour of three farmers backyard following a paper road (standing knee deep in mud with Colin pointing to a blank GPS screen saying "look I can see the road, can't you?") Having let all the air out of the rear I managed to find some traction and we only had to carry the bikes through one bog, all in all well worth doing. We passed on trying the northern Pureoro tracks afte that. Got to the lodge about 6 and told lies about how brave we had been.
Saturday: As I said previously a great ride and lovely conditions, the tracks were all clean and hard packed so fast and easy to ride on, the forestry was great! I did my usual on the challenge section, stalled bike, legs too short, why am I lying on the ground? Good to see so many bikes going through the challenge, it's a great way to deflate your ego! The rest of the ride was equally awesome, did all the extra bits and the views were magnificent, riding the ridgeline after Tiniroto was neat, I even got in some cow herding practice while I chatted to a farmer (I'm not so sure my help was appreciated but he was rolling around with laughter so I probably brightened up his day).
Best stretch of road for me was the last bit of gravel into Matawai, lots of loose stuff and it suits the 640 perfectly, a perfect day.
Sunday: Motu, what more is there to say, absolutely picturesque and a great ride, frosts, livestock, ufos', camper vans, what more could you want?
We turned north at Awakeri via some back roads towards Taurange (thanks Nick) but not before almost getting cleaned out by a tractor blowing a stop sign, despite narrowly missing killing two people the driver didn't stop, just abused us and kept going. I think Chris and Als' heart rates might just have reached normal levels this morning, not very nice.
Got home for 5, narrowly missing the rain so I'm sorry Clint, but it was only mildly moist this time!
Thanks for the organising Clint & Rosie and for the company the rest of you, heal up quickly those with injuries.

Made it back to Wellington just after 10pm, via the gravel roads just north of Rotoma, Rotoehu lakes, then down through Mamaku forest - boy does it rain in there! Was also pretty cold through a wet desert road after dark!
Total of 1700km for the 3 days, including 800km yesterday. Must admit I'd had enough of the stock DR seat by the time I got home last night. Will have to investigate an aftermarket alternative.

Feedback on the GPS route was good (luckily, since I hadn't tested it), so we will be keeping that option in future.
We were pretty lucky with the weather, yesterday the rain didn't set in until Clint was going outside to wash his bike :nya:
A note to other ride organisers: The bright pink hi-vis was great for tail-end-charlie-ing. The corner men could see me coming a mile away, so the forest section flowed really well.

Checked out Motu falls on Sunday after a fast ride following Cary through the first gravel of the day, then a cruise through the Motu road what a great track. Ride home in great weather filled up in Murupara then back through the forest with boxabits from Minginui to SH5 which seemed so much longer north south, big ride home boxabits thought you would stop half way.

Yeah, I was one of the first away from the lunch / lake. I came around the cormer and he was on my side of the road. I then tried to signal to the driver that there were a lot more bikes heading this way. He just looked at me like "huh?"
Spose thats why he drives a grader and we ride bikes.

As a matter of interest, if there are grader warning signs up then the grader has right of way while its got its blade down irrespective on where it is on the road. I know some don't bother with the signs but they should put them up. I grew up on country roads and one of my jobs at the mo is driving trucks and trailers doing maint on country roads and if Im spreading with the decks up then I am always in the centre of the road or the truck is on the outside of the corners with the trailer tracking around the inside. Ive gone around blind corners on shingle and country tar seal roads and have met the following on the wrong side, trucks, school buses, farmers in utes or bikes stopped and chatting, sheep, cows, pigs, graders, deer, goats, farmers wives in SUVs (Sorry ladies but they are the worst) . Tourists on heavily loaded push bikes, Motorbike riders and to top it off, once I came across 2 mums pushing babies in mountain buggies ( I kid you not) and when you are in 45 tons of truck and trailer life can get interesting real quick.
So please people, never assume on a country road, anything can be around a corner including a sheep or goat or even a turkey can jump down off a bank behind the bike in front of you. Thats why I tend to be a slower rider on shingle simply because I have seen all of the above happen.
Reality is, irrespective of the law, on a country road, Size Rules.

I once came round a corner on a gravel road and met a combined harvester. It was so big it took up both the right and wrong side of the road. I ALWAYS slow way down on corners when I cant see whats round them. Most other riders nearly always over take me at that point which I'm more than happy for them to do :devil2: And for the record there were no grader warning signs!!

I like to ride towards the back. That way no one can see my shit lines. :( And I don't hold anyone up. I like to have things happen ahead of me, & not to be taken out by something happening behind me.
And most importantly, there will be several crash test dummies ahead of me. :innocent:
