View Full Version : Lion spotted in Taranaki!

Only last night I was explaining to certain fellow KB'ers about the wild lions of Taranaki, and of course, they didn't believe me. Well blow me down, if I only just escaped being eaten by one today as I pottered in the garden. :shit: Luckily I had my trusty "box brownee" camera with me, so I just managed to get a shot before I ran for my life to the safety of the house.

This fearsome, and so far, elusive beast, was spotted in Urenui, North Taranaki at 2pm today. I was wondering if anyone else has heard of similar sightings?

Maybe now, those certain doubting KB'ers will eat their words....

I never doubted 'The Urenui beast', many panicked pig hunters and farmers have taken refuge at my Urenui sheep station because of it. They have told me spine tingling tales of horrifying trips in to the bush and produced irrefutable proof of the beast.

Some earnest and dedicated people are trying to collate all the evidence in a scientific way and send it to Whangamomona university for analysis. I think your evidential photo is probably the best most authentic shot I've seen of the 'Taranaki lions'. If you can assure me that this shot is not photoshopped or tampered with in any way, would you please send it to www.fluffytoystuckinmybush.co.NZ for their appraisal.

In the mean time here is all the evidence we have collected to date for you to peruse, a footprint and a close up of the beast though personally I think the close up is a crude fake.

The evidence seems to be mounting by the day - only a complete sceptic could doubt the Lion's existence - I'll set a few "photo traps" to see if I can get a better snap

Luckily your sheep station has such an active and dedicated guard dog.

We spotted the Urinalnui Lion 15 minutes into the ride home today...was a 'well I'll be dipped in shit' moment as we rounded a left hander to see this sitting in the middle of the road. And it was wearing Pukeko boots! Until then, this mythical she beast and the legend that surrounded it, was put down to a few to many single malts during the darkened hours..:drinknsin

As it so happened, I had the camera at the ready (as you do)..:shifty:

I'm glad you guys aren't as sceptical as you were :msn-wink:. Even if you still poo poo all the irrefutable evidence gathered in this thread, you would still be wise to heed my words and develop a strategy for dealing with random lion attacks guys , one day it may happen and I shall just laugh in the general direction of your know it all carcases.

By the way, leave the killer dog out of it, she actually moved Today :bleh:

They are dangerous.

It's like Big Cat Diary down here in little old Urenui.

Haven't seen the bear yet (or the cougars for that matter!), but I'll be getting the trusty blunderbuss down from over the fireplace and loading buckshot, just in case.

Of course, that leads on to what is the best form of Lion evasion tactic?

By my calculations Paul, I would say 10-12 Ks...it was pretty awful weather out there yesterday, hence the umbrella I guess
It also held up a sign (which cant be seen in the photo) which read..'Urenui 4 life' :niceone:

You bastid! I only just noticed the Pukeko boots remark, them kekos are under my protection dude, Lion fodder they ain't!.

I dunno, you warn a couple o mates about preparing for the possibility of lion attacks in the Naki and all ya get is ridicule. Don't come crying to me when you've had your fricking legs gnawed of whilst picnicking at the Wind wand ya piss taking feckers!

This from the Taranaki daily News date May 2013: A man visiting the area from Warkworth had his frickin legs gnawed off by a lion Today, when interviewed in Base Hospital Mr Maha said " I wasn't expecting that to happen, you'd think someone would have warned us ". When Mr Maha's friend and local resident Mr o'sutton was asked for his thoughts he declined to comment other than to say " just tell stumpy I told him so and good luck buffing that out" :niceone: :bleh::laugh:

Why will nobody take me seriously, why oh why. :girlfight::killingme

Here is some footage of what happened when three African kiwibikers listened to the warnings of their friend, preplanned and co-operated to thwart the mighty Lions. If only you guys would stand with me we could beat this menace.

Warning: video contains Lions eating , please don't watch if you don't like lions eating stuff.

People mock but this is a true story...

When I worked in the ZCX back in the day, part of the job was to 'monitor' every 111 trunk every night to ensure they were all functional. Best way to do that was to plug an adapted low impedance monitor across each one in turn as the traffic was directed to the trunk. We heard all sorts of weird shit as you can imagine...

One night there was a call come in from an elderly lady from North New Brighton about a lion in her back yard. HHHHOOOOOO a LION madam - certainly we will send around the lion tamer just after hes finished dealing with the UFO in the next block (sigh).

Soooo - after we all had a laugh until someone mentioned that there had been a similar call the night before and next night guess what - another call about a 'lion' and people had seen some pretty odd footprints in the sand in the dunes. (no digital cameras or cell phones then) By now the PoPo were thinking either this is a wind up or - gulp - there really IS a lion loose. Apparently there was a call to the local mini zoo and they were assured that all their big cats were all accounted for.... now anyway. Rumor had it Mr Keeper had a frantic few days tracking down his pet pussy cat who was enjoying a little free time.

THEN

My mate actually nearly shot a Lion between wellie and the naki. True! It had busted through the inner fence and was a bit agitated so he was back up 'big gun' for his mate who was on tranquilizer gun duty. Fortunately the dart stuck.

Now thats just two that I know about....

So a pride of wild Lions in the Naki? Well its certainly possible and considering the insular nature of the place - entirely possible for a breeding population to hide out relatively undetected.

cough

This is terrifying news:shit:

One of the reasons I swam over from Scotland was to get away from the big cats & carnivorous haggis which ate them. It was unsafe to go trail riding at night without a blunderbuss & a can of Campbells condensed tomato soup. Apparently neither carnivorous haggi or big cats like tomato soup, their you go, I will send some down to the Naki, wear the tin on a chain around your neck.

To make matters worse, that Craig fella, um, Busch... is back at the Zion wildlife park. It's only a matter of time before he gets pissed & forgets to close the gates again.

There have lots of mention on the radio down here of a Black Panther sighted near Cromwell, and there have been numerous sightings of a large cat in the Lindis area. To top it off we have had a sheep go missing about 4 months ago.

I'll see if I can catch anything on camera in the next few days.

Update:

Police have just released these before and after pictures taken Yesterday at a Taranaki beauty spot.

Nearby Trampers were horrified when they saw local biker Mr Idont Givveafook aproach the Lions with his leftover Zebra sandwiches held at arms length.

Mr James, an eye witness, said " The biker offered the lions his sandwiches saying they were too hard to swallow. Apparently this was not the case as He stood and watched the legendary Lions devour the sandwiches and Mr Giveafook"

Mr James went on to say his thoughts were with the family and wondered if it was too soon to make an offer on the Bmw1200 gs.

Police said they will investigate the incident in time but were currently a bit 'stretched' investigating rumours of a motorist doing 103kph on SH3.
