Thinking about moving to NZ sometime in the next few years again.... how's the economy doing there for engineering ?? Is the world recession affecting things much?

If you''re a structural engineer, there's work here in consultancy. If you're in other areas, it's slow. Other than slowly gearing up for the Chch rebuild and building interest in new areas of clean technology (marine, hydro, wind, geothermal), it's a plateau at the moment.

We have engineers coming out our ears plus a shit load coming straight from uni that can't find work anywhere other than Mc Donalds.
NZ is currently fulling up with immigrants from failed shit holes like South Africa and the UK that have no personal investment in our country and even less loyalty than they did for the places they ran away from in the first place,,,so take a ticket an stand in line you'll fit in well.

But don't you see, that's why the Gubbermint set off a atomic bomb under Christchurch, so that suddenly there'll be demand for new engineers... Good thing for me I got my tin foil hat on, otherwise they can read my mind right now.

:laugh:Fella you need to wake up,NZ has long been full of natives that have no personal investment in our country and even less interest in giving a fuck,at least many of the immigrants have the means to feed themselves and and an interest in getting up in the morning to go to a job.

The best part is that they're not even a native species to NZ, yet they act like they are.

No personal investment...you're full of shite!
1) many immigrants slog their guts out to make NZ a new home, including bringing capital from 'home' to invest in businesses here is NZ. That's called creating jobs buddy.
2) Less loyalty to NZ than where they (we...I am SA'n) were...Actually, I am very loyal to both SA and NZ. I appreciate NZ for what it gave me, I also love SA and wish it were a better place than what it presently is to that I could have stayed there, in the place that will always be my homeland. However, my wife is a kiwi and my kids will be kiwi's and there are many things I love about NZ and I will continue to invest time and energy into being an active and productive part of this community. More so than some kiwi's do! Besides, someone has to come in and replace all the kiwi's bailing to Aussie!
The fact is, there is a portion of the population here, and in fact anywhere in the world, that is closed minded and unaware of the facts, only wanting to see things through your prejudiced view point. Well yay for you, I am sure you see all sorts of positive things all around you.

See, I have been to SA and I have a lot of friends that live both here and there so I,ve seen some and heard the stories.

That sums up the attitude of a lot of people in NZ towards immigrants, regardless of how hard working/hassle free they are.
Go for a long holiday see the sights enjoy yourself, tick the seen NZ box and leave with a good impression of the people and country.

NZ is an extremely beautiful country full of interesting people, the majority of are not biggoted morons. My Grandfather went to war to wipe national socialism off the face of the earth, he got most of them, but a few hid and got away. I am very proud of what my Grandfather achieved.
I'm a mechanical engineer, I have spent most of my working life in the boiler, fuel and gas industry I am now the engineering and ops manager for irrigation company (just a lot of big arse pipes and pumps). I have never been unemployed and I love what I do. I looked at working in the US and the UK not long ago and they were not paying any more than I get here. Actually the pay rates in the UK in the gas industry were pretty poor.

It was "your" type of Saffa that created the problems,,,not the natives.
Yet the natives are freely robbing, chopping, maiming, raping, pillaging, mass murdering one another even years after. The problems were always there, and it's most likely the white man suppressed it for a while and even nurtured it to play one group against the other, but it's always been there.
See, I have been to SA and I have a lot of friends that live both here and there so I,ve seen some and heard the stories.
Stories from one perspective, Can you honestly say you know all sides of the story? Truth from one perspective is skewed truth, even if it has some historical basis. Often actions and facts can be frequently exaggerated. Were all Germans Nazis? Were all Italians fascists? Were all Russians Communists? Were all SAs enslavers?
The one thing that always comes across very strong to an outsider looking in,over there as in the NZ situation was that your people and mainly the English in NZ actualy stole and murdered everything and everybody they could get away with, and now people like you today attempt to hold yourself above the natives of those countries you stole and who's cultures you tried to destroy.
Many of these cultures suffered but they were neither destroyed nor killed off entirely. But what they do now for themselves is entirely up to them, not living on hatred and finger-pointing. One day, the Maoris will wake up and realise that they are destroying their own rich culture with booze, drugs and apathy. Same for the Africans - they will realise that clinging to the past will not let them move forward.
BTW, sorry to admit this to a shit head like you,but unlike you and your "Kaffas' or what ever you call them,,,I don't simply hate all SA's or immigrants,
Kaffirs is the derogatory term the Afrikaans used for the black man. You could have fooled us...
I just believe our country doesn't need them when we have well educated young people being over looked in the work place in favour of these people already.
Unfortunately, many well-educated young people want more money and aren't interested to earn it the hard way. I see too many who want to be a full-fledged workman, electrician, carpenter, etc, without going through the training period or apprenticeship. They want things now: Money, car, job title, ipad/ipod/iphone, easy life. Many immigrants come from hard lives where they were with nothing or next to nothing, and appreciate NZ for the opportunity they have been given, and so are willing to slog to make a better life for themselves and their families.
I'm afraid even if the opportunities existed solely for NZ's well-educated young people, they may not be interested, and will be lured away to Aus anyway... Too many, for example, are attracted to the service industry, finding that more alluring/glamourous and the work simple. Jobs in engineering, science, technology are not as appealing to them, so guess why immigrants are then used to fill in those positions?
look around the world today and see the problems that are created by to many immigrants on an existing culture.
True, especially when those immigrants refuse to adapt - even in some ways - to the host culture. That is why there is a lot of friction in countries in Europe.

Send a few of those spare engineers down here where it is cold.
The problem with the uni's is they throw out graduates with BEs that know nothing about engineering in the real world. I have broken my fair share of grads over the years, like any group some have done well and some have struggled. There is at least 10-20 years good solid work coming up in Canterbury for all kinds of engineers.

Be a trust fund manager - Big salaries, luxury homes, and sports cars as part of your bonus, steal a few mil and run away to Aus and claim that life is hard living on 'only' $7,000 a month's allowance (all while the families who invested in the trust fund are broke and starving)...
If convicted, get a few months in jail, pay a pitifully small fine and serve some hours community service, while going for free taxpayer-paid counselling. After your sentence is done, sell your story to tabloids, and a book on 'how not to invest' to publishers, and teach 'creative' accounting at the local university or institute.

I was there 3 yrs ago and found the general day to day cost of living really expensive. Stuff like milk, bread, cheese, veg, gas, smokes (if you do), beer, eating out all atleast twice the cost of Oregon and other parts of the states I have visited. Vehicles cost a lot as does insurance. You will pay a lot more mortgage interest if you take out a loan to buy a house. Generally, dollar for dollar you are better in Canada (or the states too). If you can get a high paying job then this shouldn't be a problem.
Having said all that I miss the place and would move home tomorrow if circumstances allowed.
